ARTS AND LEISURE• “Curtains draw on figures shrouded in shadow — female students perform dressed as “men” in the opening number of the dance concert set to “The Man” by Taylor Swift. The Spring Dance Recital featured all types of art — students did everything — creating art for the colorful and vibrant backgrounds (Arwen Lutwyche ’22), recording piano music for dancers (Amanda Hudak ’24), and even singing songs live for the performance (Isabella Moranheras ’22).”

OPINION• “At this point, it seems that almost everyone has heard about the SCOTUS draft that was leaked late Monday, May 2. This was the first draft of a decision regarding Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization – a case that was originally tried down in Mississippi but recently made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. But what really happened, who is Samuel Alito, and what even is Roe v. Wade?”

OPINION • “When I heard the recent news about the changes to the dress code, I was disappointed with the administration for their actions. I think the deans’ office could have handled the decision to suspend skirts and dresses differently and with the best interest of students in mind. I heard about the news from a screenshot I had seen on a private story on Snapchat. However, I had not heard this through the direct email the school sent to people who identify as females.”

CAMPUS NEWS • “As part of the Hill community’s celebration of Inclusion Week, students and faculty gathered in the Warner Center to talk about critical race theory—the idea that race is a social construct and that racism is embedded in the country’s legal systems. They were joined by panelists Sasjha Mayfield ’21, Adam Benzanine ’21, and Kendal Thomas ’21.” Read more at https://thehill.news/news/hill-community-discusses-critical-race-theory-in-dei-inclusion-week-event/

CAMPUS NEWS • DEI’s Inclusion Week kicks off with Poetry Night: “ What is pizza plus poetry equal to? Wholesomeness! For an hour and a half, students from various backgrounds shared their own works, recited poems in their mother tongue and sang song covers to kick off DEI’s Inclusion Week.
Nimala Sivakumar ’23, the host of the event, said, “Last year, I struggled with a traumatic event in my life, and the only way I could get close to moving past it was when I wrote and performed a poem at the HASOGI Breaking the Silence open mic. I am a huge fan of spoken word poetry, and never knew how powerful it could truly feel to have control over your own freedom from past events.”
On April 3, the DEI council hosted a poetry event in the Warner Center to give students a space to express their talents and voice. Here are some of the works students shared on the night of the event… “

OFF CAMPUS • Bryan Stevenson is on a mission for equal justice for the unfairly incarcerated • “ryan Stevenson believes the American legal system treats “you better if you’re rich and guilty than if you’re poor and innocent.” An inspiring lawyer who has dedicated his entire life to defending people who are poor, incarcerated or condemned, Stevenson has spent more than 30 years of his life, helping innocent people of color escape from death row.
The case of Walter McMillian is one of many examples that exemplifies Stevenson’s work with the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative. The movie “Just Mercy,” which details the McMillian case, was shown to all members of The Hill School on MLK day. “

FEATURES • “The Hill News’ very own MoniYah Person-Henderson ‘23 has been selected to attend the George Mason Journalism Conference this summer, where she will have the opportunity to accelerate and broaden her passion for journalism. “I really started getting into journalism this past year,” explained Person-Henderson. “I did Hill News my sophomore year, and I really liked it; then I came back and did it even more, and I realized that I really liked communicating with people and learning more about people – not just what you see on the surface, but really about them, and that’s what Hill News and journalism is really all about.”

For many Black people, hair is not merely hair – It can be something much more complex, experimental, or even cause for introspection. It can also inform external relationships, influencing their school or workplace experiences. For Black students at Hill, some far away from home, this relationship becomes something different.

CAMPUS NEWS • Hill vocal groups put on a spectacular winter concert :
“Despite many challenges that the four Hill vocal groups – Hilltones, Hilltrebles, Chamber Choir, and Chorus – faced, they were able to put on their first in-person vocal performance in several years.
Yoon Soo Lim, the Hill School Director of Vocal Music, spoke a bit about how the vocal concert was a huge success, with many students and faculty members coming to the Chapel for the first Hill school vocal performance in recent years”.

On Tuesday, Feb. 8, Hill shifted to a recommended masking policy, marking a significant step in the school’s efforts to return to normalcy. CAMPUS NEWS • Hill community members share opinions on new masking policy: On Tuesday, Feb. 8, Hill shifted to a recommended masking policy, marking a significant step in the school’s efforts to return to normalcy. Although students will continue to be required to wear masks in crowded areas like the Chapel and Dining Hall pantry, they will now be given a choice to unmask in classrooms. Hill employees, however, are still able to regulate masking within their individual spaces and have the ability to mandate masks in their classrooms or offices if they wish to.
For some teachers, Pennsylvania’s declining COVID-19 cases and Hill’s high vaccination rates have made unmasking in classrooms feel much safer. Athey Family Master of Mathematics and Science Jay Spencer explained that he is comfortable with Hill’s mask-recommended policy and feels that Hill has so far managed COVID-19 cases on campus well enough to do so.”

FEATURE: "Foster inclusivity; provide incentives for homeownership and property pride; and generate quality business development: this is what Hobart’s Run does for the Pottstown community. Established in 2016 as a nonprofit launched by The Hill School, the organization focuses on a 900-parcel area to revitalize the neighborhood. It began with a 600-parcel area that focused on Queen Street in the south; N. Adams in the west; Beech, Grant, and Jackson in the north; and Keim Street. They then added N. Washington Street in July 2020, expanding their focus area...."

ARTS AND LEISURE: Like many others, I have been revisiting the different cinematic interpretations of Peter Parker in preparation for “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The famed web-slinger has had his fair share of franchises and sequels, and now seems like the perfect opportunity to compare and contrast these actors’ portrayals before Tom Holland’s third outing…

OFF CAMPUS: “Throughout the span of a few weeks, as a part of Hill’s H-term internship program, I learned firsthand what first responders in our community do for a living. This winter, students at Hill were given the opportunity to partake in an out-of-school internship. This internship would fulfill students’ H-term requirements and would be a great way to learn something new. One of my fellow Hill students, Anthony McMullan ‘23, who serves his community at home as a volunteer firefighter, told me about the chance to learn what it takes to be a firefighter…”
