What would Celia Cruz have thought about the situation in Cuba right now? I'm not sure, but let's not forget that she wasn't even allowed to attend her own mother's funeral. Then years later, while performing at a concert in Guantanamo Bay, she reached over the fence to put some Cuban soil in a jar to bring back with her to the U.S. When she was buried, that soil was poured over her casket. Also next month, the U.S. mint will unveil the quarter with Celia's image on it. Congratulations to Celia. Let's honor Celia today, which is the anniversary of her passing from a brain tumor on July 16, 2003. Tune in to Salsa Empire Radio and listen to many of her great songs. Today earmarks the birthday of a very special person. April 20th, would have been the 101st birthday of El Rey del Timbal. Do you know who that was? His name was Tito Puente. A super-talented musician, composer, dancer, bandleader, and of course, timbalero (although he also knew how to play piano, vibes and other instruments). He brought together the jazz and Latin worlds; Harlem and Spanish Harlem; the young and the old; the dancer and non-dancer. He was never afraid to take chances with his music. We must never forget one of the greatest musicians of all time. Please listen to Salsa Empire Radio (www.salsa-empire.com) and listen to many of his songs as well as music from other mambo musicians, like Machito, Tito Rodriguez, Orlando Marin, and Tito Puente Jr.. Two Sons of Latin music veterans. Below is a picture of Tito Puente Jr. and Alfredo Armenteros, who traveled 200 miles to attend the March 16th event along with his mother, his wife and in-laws. Alfredo's father was the late, great, Chocolate Armenteros, the extremely talented trumpet player who often worked with Tito Jr.'s father, Mr. Tito Puente. This was for the history books, folks.
