Toasted Cheese Toasted Cheese is an online writing community and a literary journal among the "101 Best Websites fo Our crew has a passion for excellent writing.

In 2001, we created Toasted Cheese as a place where writers could get honest feedback on their work, receive reliable information, discuss issues related to writing, and share links to publishing opportunities while creating a community. We also wanted to create a quality literary journal that was open to emerging writers as well as seasoned veterans. Toasted Cheese has changed over the years but

certain things remain the same. We love to see it submitted to TCLJ. We love to cultivate it on our forums. We strive to produce it ourselves. TC is a site created by writers for writers, all of us learning from each other. Everything at Toasted Cheese is free, including our extensive archive of original content: articles, exercises, writing prompts, podcasts, and more. There’s no membership fee (nor is there a minimum posting guideline but we ask that you give in order to get). We never charge a reading fee, either for regular submissions or contests. TC doesn’t accept advertising. We hope that TC will help you achieve your definition of success—whether that’s making the NY Times bestseller list, getting a short story in print, or asking for feedback for the first time

The Annual DEAD OF WINTER contest is OPEN!!!!

Stories submitted to the the 23rd Annual Dead of Winter contest (December 2023) will use the theme DEATH FINDS A WAY.

For the first time in 20+ years, we were late in announcing our theme. Why? Life. So if life can find a way, couldn’t death do the same? How does death, in any form you choose to think of it, find a way into our bodies, psyches, or environments? Is death personified in your story? Is it an entity that creeps under doors or passes through solid objects, from stone to flesh? Is death a place? A state of being among many? For characters who believe they can outwit or outlast death, how does the great leveler finally win… or does it?

EVERY YEAR:

Stories MUST be based on the theme provided.
Stories MUST be set in winter.
Stories MUST fall in the horror genre.

HOW TO ENTER:

The contest opens October 1, 2023 and the deadline for submission is 11:59 PM ET December 21, 2023.

Email entries to dow2023[at]toasted-cheese.com with the subject line: Dead of Winter Contest Entry.

Include at the beginning of your entry: Title (word count)

The word count range for DOW 2023 is 1000–5000 words. You may round your word count however you like (example: a 4853-word-story could be “4853,” “4850,” or “~4900”). Stories that do not fall within word count parameters will be disqualified.

Follow general contest guidelines and general Dead of Winter guidelines. See DOW guidelines for prize information.
