“I hate you.”

That’s what one of the 4 people in yesterday’s pre-production meeting said after reading the screenplay I wrote for their commercial. They wanted a tear-jerker story to connect with their target audience and that’s what they got. I spent the last week writing and tweaking the script, then yesterday I presented it to the client marketing team. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The meeting began with just 3 people, then they called in a 4th person and asked them to read it with no prior context of what we were working on. When she finished reading, she was visibly emotional. She just paused and said “you wrote this?”
I nodded and then she said, “I hate you.”

It was one of the best compliments anyone could have given for this project.

Script approved. Now we start planning to bring it to life.

We're back baby!

Back in March, the American Warriors series I was working for abruptly ended and I got laid off. I wasn't planning on going back into freelancing again, but I spent the last 4 months actively looking for employment and got nowhere. Meanwhile, clients have been slowly coming in and I've finally decided to take the plunge again.

To celebrate and inaugurate this new beginning, here's a hot and fresh demo reel for your viewing enjoyment.

Lately I’ve been feeling like I’ve forgotten the joy and importance of creating images for my own enjoyment and not for “work”. I’m going to try to get back to those roots of how I started this thing called a “career”. Here’s a few things I saw yesterday while walking around with some fun people in Seaside, CA. I’m here for a few days on a work assignment.

Since moving to Texas, I have found that the majority of the vets I get to interview tend to be a younger demographic than when we lived in Oregon. I'm meeting a lot more vets who served within the last 2 decades than I was used to. It's a very different experience for me as the interviewer to be hearing these stories and thinking about where I was and what I was doing at the time when these events were happening. In 2009 I was a missionary building an orphanage in the jungles of Belize. At the same time, Ben Holmes () was a Marine serving in Iraq. 14 yrs later we met for the first time and I filmed his story.

I've never yet had a reason/opportunity to rig a car with a camera mount, but I've always wanted to. Today I decided to give it a try just for the experience. I don't have "actual" car mounting hardware so I made do with what I do have. Here's the results. Photos of the rigging are in the comments.

There’s a rumor that I may have forgotten to schedule a more official location for filming this interview and then had to impromptu turn my living room into a studio. Those allegations can neither be confirmed or denied.

FLEXIBILITY. ADAPT AND OVERCOME.

I've had a few people comment on how good this interview I recently filmed looks so I thought I'd share some quick behind the scenes because this was actually one of the most short notice and rushed set ups I've ever done.

This was filmed immediately after he was a keynote speaker at an event. I had been trying for several days prior to get a confirmation if this interview would even be possible. I didn't receive that confirmation until about 1 hour before this was filmed. I had less than an hour of set up time and we filmed this in the waiting room of a small regional airport.

We completely rearranged all of the furniture in the room just to make space. For lighting we simply turned off all the interior lights and put up a black curtain over one window upstage frame right. It's actually in the wide shot. The key light is coming from another window. The entire wall outside frame right was huge windows. We didn't have time or resources to black them all out and set up our own lights so we just embraced the natural light. It was partly cloudy and windy so the clouds were moving and changing the light frequently. It took a lot of color grading to get a reasonably consistent color across both cameras.
The wide shot is on the FX6 which was set to auto ND. When the window light changed, the camera would compensate the exposure but I still had to correct for color and contrast. The CU shot is an A7s3, so no auto ND on that one. That took a bit more post color work to compensate the changing light.

To further complicate the situation, there was a FLY buzzing around the room and it kept landing on his FACE and I had to keep asking the General to repeat a statement because of the freaking fly. Good grief!

A few days ago I received a text from the General's aide who had some nice things to say after they saw the show. There's a screen shot of that text below...

He was so humble and genuine. What an honor to meet this man and film his story!
