Firelands Storm Team Severe weather updates for the Firelands area, now including Richland and Ashland counties!

12/01/2026

Good afternoon everybody!

What a nice day out there today! The wind is making it feel cooler out there, but the sun feels nice.

This will continue this afternoon with these high, thin level clouds over head. These will filter the sun some, but they are expected to stay pretty thin out there. High pressure and a Ridge certainly doing its job. Gusty winds will also continue this afternoon, but nothing too crazy out there. Overall, a relatively quiet afternoon.

This evening will feature clearing skies. As we lose the sun light we will stabilize the atmosphere a bit more even though it’s pretty stable now. Winds will diminish as well, as we go through the evening. Overall, a quiet evening on tap for us, as mentioned earlier. A good evening to be out and about if you need to be.

Over night tonight, those clear skies will continue. The good news is, even with the clear skies, we have a warm front that will push through and really keep our temperatures up over night. This will set the tone for a brief warm up tomorrow. But a really, really quiet over night period is still expected tonight. A good night for sleeping, and a good cap off to a pretty quiet day.

Temps will remain steady in the mid 30s today. The wind chills will be in the low 20s though, through the afternoon. Lows tonight will drop back into the upper 20s to low 30s.

That’s it, that’s the day for us. Really quiet out there! Have a great day out there and stay safe!

Seneca county has cancelled their LEVEL 1 snow emergency.

Good morning again everybody!

I’ve fielded several questions about this mid week system coming through. I’ll just do a quick breakdown here.

What’s it look like? Well right now it’s for certain a system will affect us locally. It looks like it will start as rain, and then flip to snow on the back side of the system. Timing is going to be key here and models, are still on the fence about it. One is definitely over achieving with the system, the other is more realistic. The over achieving model, though, fair warning, is typically more accurate, then the one that seems more realistic.

What does all that mean? It really is simple. It just means that the storm track and intensity between the two major models, are still uncertain. One has the system going closer to the coast, which would bring our snow system to just snow showers and nothing significant. The other, is bringing it closer to the area, and right up the Appalachian mountains. That solution would bring more snow, but given the cold air that will be coming in, it would be tough to get a “snow storm” from it. It’s still coming down from Canada, vs the Midwest.

All of this said, we will say that, area wide, we are likely looking at about 2-4” of snow for Wednesday night through Thursday morning. This will likely fall at the time where our Thursday morning commute will be disrupted, so stay tuned on that. We could see additional lake effect snow on the back side of the system, due to the wind flow over the lakes, so there’s a chance that Erie, Huron, and Lorain counties, could pick up a little more than that. Lake effect Is tricky, so we will know more about that later.

Overall, I would not be surprised to see winter weather headlines issued for this, but if you’re looking for a huge snowstorm, this isn’t it. The pattern looks to be loading up for that potential for late next week, and through the final week of January, and even beyond. This does NOT mean we will have a huge storm, but the potential increases.

Stay tuned for the latest, you know where to find it. We will update further when appropriate.

Good morning everybody! Happy Monday! back to that daily grind this morning.

Good news to try to help you get over that case of the Monday blues today, is quiet weather on tap for us. No sense in dragging this out, so it should be short and sweet.

Cloudy skies over head to start today off. The good news is, as we progress through the morning, we should see breaks start to appear over head. It shouldn’t take too long to get those breaks, but nonetheless, we should begin to see partly cloudy skies out there. Overall, a quiet morning for us out there across the area. Not much to speak of, going on out there weather wise.

This afternoon, we should really see those breaks in the cloud deck. We will have a brief High pressure and Ridge come through the area. These should be enough to eat away at the cloud deck as it does so. We may have a few wind gusts out there as the pressure gradient gets messed with, otherwise a quiet afternoon for us.

This evening, you guessed it, more of the same for us. More partly cloudy skies will be us this evening. We may even begin to clear out even more, so going into the over night, we may see some clear skies over head briefly. Otherwise, a nice evening to be out and about. It’ll be a little chilly, but weatherwise a calm, quiet evening for us.

Over night tonight, we will see clouds build back in late, but otherwise partly cloudy to mostly clear skies will be with us, over night. When the clouds start to build in a bit, over head, but otherwise, you guessed it, a quiet over night period for us out there.

Highs today will get into the mid to upper 30s. That sunrise and warmer weather should help those back roads thaw out across the area. Over night tonight, lows will be seasonably cool, dropping back into the mid to upper 20s.

A good day if you have to run some errands or just have to be out in general. That’s all we have for you today! Have a great day and stay safe out there!

Goooooood morning everybody! Happy Sunday!

Well, here’s that initial burst of snow we were talking about yesterday. It got pushed back into this morning for arrival but that’s okay. Better late than never. This will give us a moderate snowfall for a little bit. This is moving due east, pretty slowly. If I had to guess it’s moving at about 15-25mph, so this will take a couple of hours to clear the area, even with it being halfway through already. The winds will increase with this, and visibilities will drop as well. Roads may become quickly snow covered and slick as well, since they were decently wet from yesterday’s rain, going into the over night period tonight. This should clear the area by about 6am.

Going forward through the rest of the morning, outside of this snow burst, we could see some lingering snow showers through the morning hours. This will all begin to transition to lake effect by the mid to late morning hours, but again, as that transition happens, we could still get some lingering snow showers in the normal parts of the area, so eastern Erie, Huron, and Lorain counties. Windy conditions will be expected today to begin as well this morning, as a decent Low pressure system and trough swing through the area.

As we head into the afternoon, again, area wide snowfall should come to an end. Gusty winds will continue, as well as cloudy conditions out there. Those gusty winds will be the strongest along the immediate lakeshore, especially once they turn out of the northwest this afternoon. These winds may cause some blowing and drifting snow issues, as the snow that will fall won’t be heavy, wet snow, so be on the look out for that. Otherwise, cloudy and windy across the area today. Welcome back to winter!

As we head into the evening, cloudy skies will remain with us, as well as some gusty winds. Winds will begin to diminish though as we progress into the evening. Overall we will quiet down out there as the Low pressure and trough gets through the area and outta here. Still, I would use caution out and about this evening with the potential for blowing and drifting snow in those typical, wide open spaces that see the blowing and drifting snow.

As we head into the over night, we should see some breaks in the clouds. Winds will continue to decrease as we head through the over night as well. Skies will ultimately become partly cloudy as get into the late overnight and into the morning hours tomorrow as well. So overall the over night will calm down across the area and we really should have an okay drive into work and school tomorrow. It will be seasonably cool out there, but otherwise, a better looking overnight into early tomorrow morning for us.

Highs today will get into the low 30s. Basically, they won’t move from where they are now. Obviously it will feel colder with the winds out there. Lows tonight will fall back into the low to mid 20s.

Have a great day out there. Please be safe and use caution out on the roads today! We will be back with the afternoon update later. See you then!

Goooooood afternoon everybody!

Current radar picture is attached below. We are going to see these clouds hang around and we should see some scattered rain showers this afternoon. Radar pictures from the surrounding NWS offices are relatively quiet so far but I do anticipate that to change slightly as the afternoon progresses. We will keep an eye on that, but for the purpose of what’s going on right now, we do have scattered showers making their way through the area right now. These showers will continue through the afternoon as we welcome in our Low pressure system and cold front later today.

As we head into the evening, these showers should become more widespread through the area. Again, we will keep an eye on this, as we head through the afternoon. I would anticipate the winds to pick up this evening, and definitely with any rain showers today. The rain won’t be too heavy across the area, but it should start to grow in coverage this evening to include most of the area. Outside of that, cloudy skies and some wind gusts out there across the area this evening.

As we get into the over night tonight, we will see lingering rain showers, switch over to snow showers. While I don’t anticipate a strong enough cold front, we do have a chance for snow squalls. There’s enough indicators on a couple short term models that support that idea. If we get caught in these, the potential for a quick inch of snow where we do see them, is possible, but overall, snowfall tonight will be minimal overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. Winds will be gusty as well over night and through tomorrow, so if we do see any snow showers, or even snow squalls, late tonight, we will see varying visibilities out there, so if you’re traveling late tonight and into early tomorrow morning, keep that in mind. Otherwise, cloudy skies, more seasonable temps and some wind gusts out there across the area.

Temps today will stay steady in the low 40s until this evening when that cold front approaches. It won’t pass through until late tonight but temps will come down behind it. Lows tonight will settle in the mid 20s over night.

That’s all we have for you, for now. We will keep an eye on the radar and come back if we need to. Have a great day out there everybody! And stay safe out there!

Good morning everybody, happy Saturday!

Really needed that sleep. My goodness. My apologies on such a late morning post.

Cloudy skies will be with us this morning, as the outer reaches of clouds from a Low pressure system are extending over the area. The good news, is we will remain dry for this morning, these clouds aren’t anticipated to produce much just yet. Radar does indicate some light rain, or maybe some snow, in Richland and Ashland counties. Those rain, or snow showers likely aren’t hitting the ground, but the potential is there. Otherwise, it’s quiet across the area for now.

As the Low pressure moves closer to the area, some short term models are bringing it together with one to our east, and making it into one big Low pressure system. This will allow for a deepening Low pressure system out there, and as it does so, winds will begin to get gusty. I don’t think they’ll be as bad as yesterday, as the center of the Low pressure will be well to our east, but we will keep an eye on that. Rain showers will also develop this afternoon, and be scattered about the area, early this afternoon. Rainfall will be light, and the heaviest rain should be to our east. But, the entire area should get into some rain this afternoon, and it’ll vary in intensity.

This evening rain should become more widespread across the area. Again, rainfall amounts will generally be light across the local area, so I don’t think we see flooding concerns, but if we have a heavier shower or two, some ponding on the roads will be possible. A cold front will swing through with the rain showers this evening, and this should change over the rain to snow showers. This should mostly be a lake effect event, though a couple of the short term models do indicate we could see some snow squalls over the area this evening, before it does transition to lake effect. This could cause some slick roads out there, as well as a quick inch of accumulation. I really think it’s looking likely that we do get some lingering snow showers at least, I’m not sold on snow squalls though, but we will keep an eye on things and update if needed.

Overnight tonight we will get all precipitation to come to an end. Lorain county should get into some of that lake effect and pick up 1-2” of snow tonight before it shifts east out of the area. Again, lake effect snow is really hard to pinpoint and forecast, so eastern Erie and Huron counties could see some snow linger as well into the over night. Again, we will keep an eye on this, and update as needed. Otherwise, most of us should be clear of the precipitation by midnight, and conditions should dry out and continue to do so into Sunday morning. Cloudy skies will remain with us, as well, into the over night hours. We could get some breaks in those clouds over head as the Low pressure system takes off out of the area.

Highs today will reach into the mid 40s prior to the cold front swinging through this evening. Temps will fall back into the 30s after the front passes through. Lows tonight will drop back into the low to mid 20s.

Have a great day out there! We will see you soon enough for the afternoon update. Stay safe out there!
