Black British Book Festival 2023 Introduces
First-Ever UK Black British Author Book Tour
The highly anticipated Black British Book Festival is back, and this year, it introduces its first-ever UK Black British Author Book Tour. The Book Tour Will Be Visiting Wolverhampton on 9th/10th September, and Birmingham on 22nd September, 2023.
Founded in 2021 by visionary Selina Brown, this festival has evolved into a national sensation, with its main event scheduled to take place at the Southbank Centre in October, expected to draw over 4,000 enthusiastic attendees coming together to celebrate the rich tapestry of Black British authors across all genres.
Dedicated to breaking down barriers for Black British writers and providing a powerful platform for emerging talent, the Black British Book Festival embarks on a groundbreaking initiative. A group of 30 remarkable Black British authors, including luminaries like Joseph Coelho, Derek Owusu, and Jackie Kay, will embark on a transformative summer book tour from August to October. These vibrant literary pop-up events will be held in unconventional spaces, such as chicken shops, hairdressers, sportswear shops, and shopping centres, reaching out to historically underserved communities in the UK. The festival aims to democratize literature, bringing the joy of reading to individuals who may not have had previous opportunities to engage with books.
Building on the resounding success of previous editions, the festival proudly enjoys the support of headline sponsors Pan Macmillan and Audible, alongside esteemed publishers Hachette, Simon Schuster, Penguin, and Sage. Numerous brands and media partners, including The Booker Prize, Bookseller, Pizza Express, National Express, Black Ballad, Hearst Group, Waterstones, and Bookseller, have also joined forces to support this important literary event.
The festival event will take place in Wolverhampton on 9th/10th September, 2023 for both children and adults.

Help still needed so people can sleep soundly at night
Up to 30 people a week in Wolverhampton are still reaching out for help to get a bed of their own so they can sleep soundly at night.
Despite a great response when the Good Night Project was launched in the city in March, donations have unfortunately reduced to around only 1 to 2 a week, but demand for beds is still high.
The Good Night Project is just one of a number of initiatives the City of Wolverhampton Council has launched this year with partners to help combat awful situations some families have found themselves in during the cost of living crisis.
Wolves Foundation and African Caribbean Community Initiative (ACCI) joined the council to launch the Good Night Project to provide a dedicated service to provide beds and bedding to those that need them.
Since the project began in March it has received about 545 referrals for people needing a bed and delivered help to around 450 households to date.
There were more than 65 donations within just the first fortnight of launch, but this has tailed off as time has passed and there is now a real need again for all beds and in particular cots and cot beds/toddler beds.
The project is not able to accept used mattresses or bedding, but it can accept cash donations to it’s Just Giving page https://www.justgiving.com/page/acci-charity-1679052794777
Just £4 will enable the Good Night Project to buy a pillow or fitted sheet to help a child or parent sleep comfortably.
Acting Leader of the council, Councillor Stephen Simkins said:
‘Times are hard for everyone right now and the cost of living crisis is affecting most of us to some degree, but it’s truly shocking that some children and their parents don’t even have a bed to sleep in at night.
‘As a council we’re doing all we can with the help of our partners the Wolves Foundation and African Caribbean Community Initiative (ACCI) to combat this awful situation, but we need your help.
‘If you have a bed you no longer use or which your child has grown out of then please think about donating it to this great cause.
‘A good night’s sleep is essential to us all and something many of us take for granted. It’s a cornerstone of good health and one of the foundations upon which healthy, successful lives are built.
‘Together we need to help ensure every child and indeed every person in the city can have a bed to call their own.’

Find out more about your new Family Hub at open days
A series of open days will take place at Wolverhampton's eight new Family Hubs over the coming weeks to showcase the services on offer.
Wolverhampton is one of 75 areas in England to have benefitted from a share of investment totalling £300m from the Government’s Family Hubs and Start for Life programme to create the new Family Hubs.
The hubs act as ‘one stop shops’, offering guidance and advice on a range of circumstances to support families through pregnancy and beyond, including infant feeding, mental health and wellbeing, health visiting support and parenting classes.
They provide a wide range of other services, including stay and play sessions and birth registrations, and bring together wider wraparound services that can make a huge difference to people who need extra support – such as advice on benefits and welfare rights, getting into work, relationship building and stopping smoking.
There are a total of eight Family Hubs across the city, and they will be hosting open days as follows:
The Children's Village Families Hub, serving Wednesfield, Heath Town & Ashmore Park, Graiseley Lane, Wednesfield WV11 1PE, Monday 31 July
Low Hill Families Hub, serving Low Hill & The Scotlands, 26-28 Fourth Avenue, Low Hill WV10 9LZ, Tuesday 1 August
Bingley Families Hub, serving Penn, Merry Hill & Penn Fields, Norfolk Road, Pennfields WV3 0JE, Thursday 3 August
Graiseley Families Hub, serving Blakenhall, Springvale & All Saints, Pool Street, Blakenhall WV2 4NE, Wednesday 9 August
Rocket Pool Families Hub, serving Bilston, Bradley & Ettingshall, Rocket Pool Drive, Bilston WV14 8BH, Friday 11 August
Whitmore Reans Families Hub, serving Tettenhall, Whitmore Reans & Dunstall, Lansdowne Road, Whitmore Reans WV1 4AL, Tuesday 15 August

Eastfield Families Hub, serving East Park, Eastfield & Portobello, Colliery Road, Wolverhampton WV1 2QY, Friday 25 August.
Each open day will run from 11am-3pm.
Meanwhile, every hub will also be opening its doors to local schools on 13 September so education professionals are able to find out what is on offer.

Come and celebrate the new home for the Black Country Society

The Black Country Society will be moving its meetings venue to Bilston Town Hall from June 28th this year when Victoria Allnatt from the Portable Antiquities Scheme will be speaking on the wonderful finds that members of the public have dug up in the area.

To mark the occasion all attendees, whether current members or not will be given a complimentary alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink. Black Country Society Chairman, Malcolm Dick said, 'The society has over 1,200 members and this move gives us the opportunity to accommodate attendees of all ages in comfort. '

There are lifts available for those who have difficulty managing stairs. There is ample parking at the Town Hall which is also easily accessible by public transport.

The Black Country Society was founded in 1967 to promote and stimulate interest in the past, present and future of the area. It meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm and as well as hosting talks, arranges walks and visits in the locality and holds virtual meetings for those who live further afield. 🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride Month!

We are excited to mark the start of Pride Month by raising the Pride Progress flag seen in the pic with Mayor Cllr Dr Michael Hardacre who led the Pride Month celebrations, joined by colleagues from across the council and partners earlier today.

Currently flying with pride in St Peters Square outside the Civic Centre, this is only the second time in the council's history that the Progress flag has been adopted instead of the traditional rainbow flag.

Pride Month occurs every June in celebration of the LGBT+ community and to mark the Stonewall Riots in June 1969 which sparked the LGBT civil rights movement leading to Prides happening globally.

KFC restaurants across Wolverhampton hit the streets for a mass litter-pick to mark the Great British Spring Clean.
KFC team members from restaurants across Wolverhampton took to the streets to help to tackle local litter issues
KFC is partnering with the nation’s favourite environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy, to provide support to thousands of litter-pickers across the UK
KFC team members from across the area, including at restaurants for Bentley Bridge Pleasure Park, Penn Road Retail Park, and Oxley, contributed to the approximately 2,000 bags of litter collected across the West Midlands on the day. They were joined by the MP for Wolverhampton East, Jane Stevenson, to tidy up Oxley.
As a Supporting Partner for Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean, KFC has made its biggest pledge yet to support thousands of litter-pickers to help clean up local communities.
Litter-pickers in Wolverhampton and across the country can apply to a voucher scheme being offered in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy. Vouchers can be exchanged for free litter picking equipment. Groups and individuals can apply via the Keep Britain Tidy website.
KFC has also outlined a package of measures and commitments, which represent a joint effort between businesses, communities, and local authorities, to tackle the nation’s litter crisis. These initiatives include:
New bin trials. Specially designed five stream recycling points to encourage KFC customers to recycle their drink cups, liquids, paper, food and any other waste separately after finishing their meal, piloting in Manchester in partnership with Biffa, with ambitions to roll this out to KFC restaurants across the UK;
Behaviour change campaigns. Partnering with local councils across the UK to trial new ways to tackle littering, such as testing localised anti-littering marketing messages and the creation of new concept rubbish bins;
Daily litter picking. KFC’s 1,000 restaurant teams undertake daily litter picks to clean up the streets around their restaurants;
Litter-comms. A dedicated KFC mailbox allowing communities to directly report any litter problems around restaurants to KFC so the business can act promptly to tidy up;
Training initiatives for KFC’s 28,000 team members to increase their knowledge of the environmental impact of litter;
Anti-littering marketing messages, like ’tBeATosser, used across KFC restaurants including window and drive thru signage, in-restaurant audio and menu board displays to encourage responsible behaviour.
Allison Ogden-Newton, CEO of Keep Britain Tidy, said, “We are delighted that KFC has joined forces with Keep Britain Tidy for a third year to support the Great British Spring Clean and see the benefits of a business absolutely dedicated to making a practical, tangible difference to litter in the communities they serve."
