The nuclear family is the norm we were told to want. White picket fence with a mommy and daddy and a few loving siblings... what more could you need?

Well, as it turns out, humans need a lot more than that to thrive. So why is this "American dream" turning into a nightmare for so many of us?

David Brooks wrote an article in The Atlantic titled "The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake," where he outlines the evolution and challenges inherent in the design of this atomized social unity. He argues that the nuclear family—comprising two parents and their children— is often fragile and insufficient to meet people's needs.

Historically, families were large, interconnected networks that provided a strong support system with shared responsibilities, resources, and emotional support, which allowed individuals to thrive. However, the rise of industrialization and urbanization led to the decline of extended families, giving way to the nuclear family model, further reinforced by post-World War II economic prosperity and the rise of suburbia.

Despite its romanticized image, the nuclear family has inherent weaknesses such as its vulnerability to the stresses of modern life because the isolation from community often leads to social and emotional strain. Single-parent families and families with strained relationships often find it challenging to cope and children in unstable nuclear families may suffer from a lack of support, leading to adverse outcomes in education, and mental health.

To address these challenges, Brooks suggests reimagining family structures and moving towards communal living arrangements that provide greater support and stability and emphasize shared responsibilities and collective well-being for everyone involved.

Although we need some elements of the nuclear family structure in our society, it should not be heralded as the ideal or default. To address the needs of individuals and create a more equitable society, we need to make more space in our lives for platonic relationships and community support that can help keep us in balance in our family unit.

Do you believe in the nuclear family? What was missing from your own upbringing that community could have provided?

The story of the Bonobo Apes is familiar to most of the poly-folks out there, but if you haven't heard.. here it is:

Historically, the scientific community has believed that our closest relatives are chimpanzees. Chimpanzees are brutally violent and scientists found their social order is deeply patriarchal and run by violent/aggressive males.

This observation shaped scientists' theories on human nature for many decades and justified the idea that our society requires alpha males to function. However, recent genetic testing has proven that Bonobo apes are our closest living genetic relatives - so what can we learn from them?

Bonobos, otherwise known as "love monkeys" are one of a handful of species on the planet that have s*x for pleasure and not just procreation. The reason they are so loving and gentle is because of the relationship dynamics between the males and females of the species.

Bonobos function in a matriarchal society where the females lead in situations like encountering a rival tribe, and their encounters usually end with love-making between the groups.

In Bonobo culture, the females have a zero-tolerance policy towards aggressive and violent males, often ostracized from the group and denying them an opportunity to mate. If a male is gentle and kind, the females shower them with affection and love, and their genes are passed on.

All this to say - we are hosting a live event featuring the founders of the Bonobo Network who have been building a s*x-positive, polyamorous community in the Bay area for years now. They have taken this inspiring story from nature and used it as a catalyst to promote more connective community-building opportunities for the non-traditional relationship types.

We are very honored to be having Misha and William as guests on our next Re/Culture Live event, taking place on Wednesday next week, June 19th from 12:30 to 1:30 PST.

This event is offered by donation, even if the donation is 0$, we still welcome you to attend and join us to learn more from these human Bonobos.

Humanity is currently undergoing a rite of passage - out of victim and into freedom and sovereignty of adulthood.. but how does this show up in our lives?

This important transformative moment that so many cultures worldwide have utilized for centuries is, unfortunately, lacking in our Western culture. Therefore, many of us as adults remain trapped by the same attitudes and behaviors we can see in children.

In Western Indigenous cultures, they held Sun or Moon Dances. These were opportunities for men or women to enter a container of growth where they fasted, sweat, and danced in the light of the Sun/Moon to honor the world around them and feel connected to the larger web of life that is where they came from.

The challenge of the experience WAS the medicine that transformed each participant from the child they were when they entered the circle, to the confident and strong adult that exited.

These rituals were decidedly NOT easy - they were designed to push you to your limits, feel out your edges, and make you into the person you are meant to become. When you emerged, you were witnessed by your community and acknowledged in your new identity.

Our search for identity and meaning in life never used to be so hard - we could understand ourselves within the context of a larger ecosystem. The rite of passage we are in now as a civilization is an important step in our growth and continued existence on this planet, and each person is waking up to this in their own way, at their own time.

It's before us now, to welcome new traditions that can function as rites of passage so we can allow ourselves to grow out of limiting belief systems, behaviors, and patterns.

Inspired by this wisdom, we have created our own rite of passage - a course for LOVERS in all walks of life. We welcome you to join us for "Summer of Love" - our LIVE immersive online course starting June 26th with an intimate cohort. Only 14 spots left so register soon before it's full!

Our trust in our fellow humans is dwindling as the global machine marches on and technocratic billionaires continue to invest their enormous fortunes into making everyday life more barren and bleak.

However, the protests, boycotts and recent political action that is being taken to resist oppressive and exploitative systems may not be achieving actual long-lasting systemic change - and heres why:

The key to real transformation is not about forcing people to make a different choice, it's about by opening space for conversations and shared discourse.

Currently in our society, there is an increasing polarization and lack of civil discourse that is leading to more resentment building between groups and rising political unrest that could explode into something really ugly.

A promising path to peace was demonstrated at Tamera. There, diverse individuals cooperate actively within a "greenhouse of trust," an environment where people express their true selves without fear, supported by community practices like the Forum. But how can we extend this beyond a small community to the wider world?

The first step is that we need to learn how to talk to each-other with our minds open rather than yelling with our minds closed. The political environment we exist within is a direct reflection of the emotional and relational environment we experience with our friends, families and loved ones.

By providing the tools and resources to overcome these polarizing narratives and get to know our fellow humans from across the political aisle, we will disarm the tension that's been rising around us and encourage a better, brighter, more tolerant future for our society.

The secret sauce for fostering these kinds of connection is LOVE. Love unites all and dissolves the illusion of separation between us.

How can we handle the jealously that comes up for us in our relationships in a healthy way?

First step is to recognize that jealousy is inherently natural and totally an okay thing to feel. The REAL reason we get jealous is because we feel that we are suffering in our lives. When someone else is experiencing good fortune, it highlights the parts of us that feel decidedly NOT good... so we desire their happiness for ourselves.

In polyamorous communities, this is a hot button question that comes up a lot for people, especially the newbies. Often, folks strive for "compersion" or finding joy in the joy of others.

So... how can we shift from jealousy to compersion?

We cannot feel compersion if we are not satisfied with what we have since jealousy always comes from a sense of lack.

This shows up in relationships really clearly; even if you had the most responsive and loving partner, if you do not fully trust and believe in their love for you, then you may feel jealous when they spend time with their friends or prioritize something over you. Since you are experiencing lack, you unconsciously latch onto the thing you believe can take away those painful feelings.

Polyamory is hard because most of us are insecure and afraid of uncertainty and seek to receive support and stability from our romantic partnerships. If you can find someone new and fall in love with them, then how do I know you won't choose them over me? How can I be sure that you love me more?

Monogamy isn't free from jealousy though, just watch any movie ever. Humans have a hard time at relationships in general which is why polyamory OR monogamy works BEST in the context of a wider village. If you can feel that safety and support in a wider community, than it isn't the end of the world if your love partnership falls apart or shifts.

We have more space for sharing and letting go of our jealousy when we feel supported, valued and resourced. This is how you get from jealousy to compersion - and ultimately life fulfillment - regardless of your relationship style.

Have you experience compersion or jealousy in your romantic relationships? Share in the comments below.

THE INTERPLAY OF EROS & AI: Interview with Joshua Schrei (The Emerald)

Earlier this month for our summit A Cry From the Future, I had the opportunity to speak with Josh Schrei, creator of the wildly popular podcast The Emerald.

Each episode is a polished gem that explores many topics & themes from a mythic lens. The recent So You Want To Be A Sorcerer In The Age of Mythic Powers is a must-listen deep dive into understanding AI from a multi-faceted lens.

In our recent live conversation, unfolding on the day dedicated to FIRE: Harnessing Eros as the Creative Life Force, Josh and I explore the elemental theme of fire as a symbol of creativity, as well as how intact cultures weave & express this energy through & beyond merely s*xual love.

Josh tells the story of the epic battle between Shiva & K**a, and draws parallels between AI and the consequences of birthing non-organic intelligence unbound from the cycles of life and death. He advocates for a more tempered and contained approach to AI development, emphasizing the need for initiation rituals, community dependence, and respect for the primal fire of life to prevent untold destruction and ensure a more balanced and responsible exploration of technological advancements.

NEW ESSAY - LEAVE (THE END OF) THE WORLD BEHIND

I needed to put further into words the how & why we approached The Village of Lovers film.

"Without needing to resort to spiritual cliches such as “where attention goes, energy flows,” it is important to recognize that we are collectively facing a myriad of crises that require significant and sustained attention to avoid existential catastrophe.

Without positive pathways for the flow of Eros, of life energy, we remain stuck, stagnant, depressed, disconnected, and in despair.

Why is it that we are inundated with mainstream tales of apocalypse, but so few examples of imaginal possibility? Why is it that it’s far easier to condemn human nature as shallow, greedy, and violent, and therefore abdicate our responsibility to work towards a better day? In short, why do films like ‘The Village of Lovers’ matter?"

Now that we are launching globally, we would like to take a moment to tell you the story of how we found each other and this project came to be.

The Village of Lovers really began back in 2014, when John Wolfstone was volunteering in the Al Zaatari refugee camp 2014, during the height of the Syrian Civil War. There experiencing first-hand the wreckage of war, John began to read a book of essays from Tamera, given to him while he visited an Israeli-Palestinian Peace project in Jerusalem (which unbeknownst to him was a sister project of Tamera).

In these essays, John encountered a vision of global peace culture being modeled at Tamera, not achieved through protests, legislation, and politics but through exploring how to find peace in the most intimate areas of life, love, s*xuality, money, and power - the same pitfalls which often tear communities and families apart.

When John finally visited Tamera later that year, he encountered something akin to a fairy tale in terms of its beauty. At Tamera, he came upon their founding idea that:

There will be no peace on Earth, as long as there is war in Love.

War in love? Is that true he wondered? However, slowly through his time at Tamera and with other research he, soon joined by co-director Ian Mackenzie, uncovered the truth of this war in love - 6000 years of settler-colonial patriarchy, based on the domination of the feminine and uprooting nearly every indigenous culture on the planet.

Then Ian and John met Julia the next year, working on her film about love, and we recognized the kinship in our worldviews. We then cemented the Tamera Love School in Oakland in the fall of that year. By 2016, Julia was an official member of our team, and we began collectively working to share this transformative approach with the world.

We will be sharing in the coming week more about this project, the vision of humanity that's birthing in us all, and how the summit we are holding A Cry from the Future, seeks to amplify and integrate this message of a path to peace for humanity's future.

Register to watch the film at www.thevillageoflovers.com and become part of the movement by joining The Global Village of Lovers. https://www.facebook.com/groups/globalvillageoflovers/

With a commitment to re-culture taboo topics that have been relegated to the shadows of our overculture, ReCulture Co-Founder Julia Maryanska writes about her recent miscarriage.

"Whenever there is loss, it calls on immense resource to sense-make, and make peace with it.

It’s not lost on me that the miscarriage happened approximately during the time that the cease-fire was called.

The day after the miscarriage, it was like a calm after the storm. I experienced a feeling of aloneness I hadn’t quite felt before. Even with my family nearby, there was a slight sense that it was as if I had begun a journey on a train, and got off before I reached my destination, realizing I was in an unmarked location, bags in hand, not a soul in sight.

The most shocking thing I felt, was relief."

Read the whole article on Medium and support Julia's forthcoming film about womanhood, motherhood and erotic liberation at the link below. Campaign ends in 10 days!
