Korean War Gun-cam footage
During a scrounge-run of the darkest nooks within the OGTA archive, a little bit of dusty cine-film was re-discovered!
Hank Snow, 67th FBS (Korean War), makes a vertical attack on a target, 6 October, 1952.
A couple of things to note:
00:07 - He's nearly (if not perfectly) vertical
00:10 - Note the little black line in the upper left corner—this corresponds with his finger OFF the gun trigger; watch how the camera "shakes" when this little line goes away...
00:15 - Whatever is under that dark plume of smoke at the bottom of the screen is being pulverized!
00:17-30 - Care to guess how many G-forces Hank is experiencing in that pull-out?!
FYI, Hank went on to complete an astounding 666 combat missions, spread out over WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

Hank Snow, F-105 pilot, celebrates his 100th mission over Vietnam
JUST "FOUND" THIS in our archive!!!
Col. "Hank" Snow completes his 100th mission for the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing USAF.
Though there's no sound, the sense of celebration and ceremony is palpable; pay careful note to Hank's expression, too. This was also the day of Hank's 636 combat mission—read that again. Six hundred thirty six combat missions.
Note, this is a two-seater F-105 Thunderchief G model.
Hank served in WWII, Korea as well as the Vietnam War, eventually reaching 666 in total.
Hank's bio is available at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/666-the-devils-number/id593283772?mt=11
On a personal note, Hank Snow is an Old Guys and Their Airplaneslegend and long-time friend. Though he died in 2016, he'll "live forever" with everyone who knew him.

Heading out to work
Upon request - this film was taken with an iPhone in the Commemorative Air Force SB2C Helldiver The "Zeros" shown fly with Tora Tora Tora Airshows . The project, however, is "South Dakota Warrior" - our next episode of Old Guys and Their Airplanes
Eddie Faris is in the airplane right to the 9 o'clock of the SB2C (the airplane from which this is filmed). Dalton Coffey is in the airplane at our 11 o'clock.
This scene doesn't make our episode (and yes, it's almost done). But, it really set the tone (for me) to understand the dynamic of what VT-8 must have experienced. For example, this whole environment was exceptionally loud - the wind noise, the engine noise, the tremble of the aircraft...yet, during our combat sequences, I was surprised at how clearly the other airplanes could be heard above the din of our own! Add to this the percussive bangs of machine-gun fire...
We were talking through an edit yesterday where the gentle sounds of the Prairie contrasted with the chaos of the air and wondered how to make the two 'work' together for the episode. We shall see...
Anyways, many thanks to South Dakota Community Foundation, Sanford Health, Fort Pierre, South Dakota and South Dakota Air & Space Museum for their encouragement.
Oh. By the way. That water below? #hurricaneharvey probably chopped it up really good. :(
