NE Butt Co. celebrates the recent arrival of the 170 year old coach now on display in the New Hampshire Historical Society building in downtown Concord, NH. We brought our antique New England Butt Company cast iron horse weight (anchor) for a visit. These weights would have been used to secure your animal if a fence post or tree wasn’t available. This coach was built in 1855 around the same time as our horse weight.

We visited the Wyndham Textile and History Museum in Willimantic Connecticut. The museum building housed the former offices of The American Thread Company the largest maker of sewing machine thread prior to moving their mills down to The South, Mexico, and Asia. During our visit, New England Butt was invited to search their vast collection of 19th century sad irons. Lo and behold we found two from N. E. Butt; a 7 pound along with a smaller ornamental iron with rope border. Newly donated by a local benefactor these sad irons along with others from their assortment are slated for refurbishment and protection for future generations to learn and enjoy. (3rd floor, Dunham Hall archive room.

This is a silver spoon from the 1893 World's Fair: Columbian Exposition. Chicago saw 27 million people attend this expo in just a year. This souvenir silver spoon shown below was sold in the Electrical Building. In this building built for the event The New England Butt Company displayed working rope braiding machines for insulating electric wire and telephone wire. In the electrical building the public could see Edison Electric, Tesla, Westinghouse, and more. Electricity was still new for many in 1893. A giant building dedicated to what a future with electricity would bring must have been mind blowing for the public to see in person. Spoon collecting was a hobby for some but was catapulted in popularity after this fair. Many experts agree that The Columbian Exposition was the single largest event in history with the most souvenir spoons designed and sold. With 27 million visitors looking to take a memory home it’s not hard to imagine it’s true.
