Reminder that reproductive justice is a global struggle. We must build solidarity across borders & look to the mass organizing efforts of feminist activists from around the world (most recently in Mexico, Argentina, & Colombia) who have fought & decriminalized abortion.⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We must fight harder than ever for our right to safe & legal reproductive health care. As we know, outlawing abortion does not stop abortions – it just stops safe abortions & Roe v Wade being overturned will disproportionately threaten the lives of working class communities of color.⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reproductive justice is racial, gender, economic, & immigrant justice. This is a fight for ALL people (including trans & nonbinary people) & WE WILL NOT SURRENDER. May this patriarchal system burn & may something better rise from the ashes. 🔥

Reminder that in 2020 celebrities & corporations who had never spoken out about Black lives suddenly became vocal. Unfortunately, their “allyship” was all performative.
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Performative activism is surface-level “activism” that is practiced to increase one’s social capital or to avoid backlash. It prioritizes individual gain/clout/profit over the actual issue at hand. ⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Performative activists including celebs & brands post MLK quotes, stage photo ops at protests, & make empty promises to “take responsibility/do better.”
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Corporations & institutions engage in performative activism through implementing pseudo “diversity/inclusion” token positions & trainings. Others, like Target, pledge $10 million for social justice as a PR stunt (turns out Target + tons of other corporations have been secretly funding police departments for years).⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One problem with performative activism is that yt folks get to pick & choose when to show up (& when issues should trend.) They can simply move on from activism when it is no longer trending. But for BIPOC, we don’t have the luxury to simply “move on” or “go back to normal.”
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Activism does not mean you have to attend every single protest (that’s actually ableist af to demand). It does not mean you have to post social justice content daily. It does not mean you can’t take breaks. ⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But if all you’ve done is tweet “Black Lives Matter” & read one anti-racist book, that is NOT ENOUGH. ⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Activism is about integrating social justice in your every-day life. This means being an accomplice that materially improves marginalized ppl’s lives through mutual aid, direct action, calling s**t out, giving up power, politically educating yourself, refusing to be complicit, & actually listening to the needs of the most impacted. ⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because when solidarity is no longer trending, guess who is left to suffer? Communities of color. ⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We cannot afford to remain silent just bc ppl have become complacent under the democratic establishment. ⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Juneteenth Reminders! ❤🖤💚 ⠀

Also slavery was never actually abolished. The plantations just got turned into prisons. ⠀⠀⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During the post-Civil War reconstruction period, wealthy yt plantation owners used the law to sentence former enslaved Black ppl to unpaid labor.⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Though the 13th amendment abolished “involuntary servitude,” they found a loophole with the creation of the Black Codes, laws that criminalized & punished Black ppl convicted of “crimes”. ⠀⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Former enslaved Black ppl became criminalized for things like loitering or congregating after dark. They were then sentenced to prison to perform unlaid labor which continues to this day. ⠀⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These historical roots sowed the seeds of the police & prison system w/ more Black ppl in jail today than there were enslaved ppl, mostly for nonviolent drug offenses.
•
The prison industrial complex is a modified continuation of the legacies of slavery driven by a corporate profit motive that criminalizes & exploits Black ppl who are forced to perform prison labor for the capitalist ruling class.⠀⠀
•⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So if you’re a yt person or non-Black POC celebrating today, I better see you downright fighting to dismantle prisons, policing, & white supremacy entirely. Otherwise your Juneteenth celebration is just another performative holiday. 🤷🏽‍♀️
