2022 NewSong Music Finalist Kristian Phillip Valentino has announced a new EP, The Sun is Setting, out October 31. “I am setting up pre-orders for CDs soon, where I'll be donating 50% of all sales to help in the aid of my hometown Asheville, NC, which was devastated by flooding from Hurricane Helene,” KPV says. We’re so grateful!

NEWSONG MUSIC FINALS POSTPONED — NEW DATE TBA

It’s with heavy hearts we’ve made the difficult decision to postpone the NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition finals, originally scheduled for November 16 at Citizen Vinyl.

As you know by now, Western N.C. and our home base Asheville have been heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene. While Citizen Vinyl (where the event will be held) escaped any physical damage, we, along with 80% of Asheville, are without running water. Current estimates to get our water system back online range from a few weeks to months.

Because we want this event to be fun, safe, and well attended, we decided to postpone, and are currently looking at dates in January. We’ll be back soon with an update, but wanted to let those of you who have been saving the weekend of November 16 know that you’re free to schedule plans and accept other opportunities.

We look forward to gathering together in the near future! These finals will be especially sweet and celebratory.

Jobi is also performing at a Western North Carolina benefit concert, presented by Asheville Guitar Pedals , this weekend in Nashville at Soft Junk. Slow Runner, the project of indie-pop singer-songwriter Michael Flynn, announces the release of new album 'Yesterday Don’t Fail Me Now.' The full-length collection, on the NewSong Recordings label, is available on all streaming platforms as well as limited edition 12” vinyl.

A blend of hopeful and grieving, it’s the perfect album for this time — the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which ravaged Western North Carolina where Flynn is based. But the album’s roots are in a different upheaval: a few days before he performed in the 2021 NewSong Music Songwriting Competition finals, Flynn learned that his father had mere months to live. Flynn dearly wanted to win the competition so that he could share some good news with his dad — and that’s exactly what happened.

An album release show, scheduled to take place at Citizen Vinyl in Asheville, NC — where the record was recorded and pressed — has been postponed due to Hurricane Helene. A new date will be announced soon.

In celebration of its 23rd anniversary, NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition will welcome eight finalists to Asheville, NC, for an evening of songs and connection on Saturday, November 16. The internationally recognized event, previously held at the prestigious Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, has since found a home in the mountains of Western North Carolina. NewSong is proud to partner with , a multifaceted event space in downtown Asheville, to present the finale showcase.

Hey friends! R.O. Shapiro here, doin the ol’ Insta takeover today. Really honored to be one of the finalists in this year’s NewSong contest.

I’m currently based in Northern California, helping to run the music program at a historic old roadhouse on the Mendocino coast .bones.kitchen. I cut my teeth in the one-of-a-kind live music scene of Austin, TX and the heady song circles of the . You can never change where you’re from though, and I was born in Brooklyn and grew up on the East End of the South Fork of Long Island.

I’ve spent a considerable chunk of the last decade on the road, with frequent stops in Southeast Alaska, Vancouver Island, New Mexico, and Michigan. One of the things I love most about this gig is how I get to form relationships with so many different communities, and in turn explore the many different sides of myself.

I am actually on tour in NY right now, playing at tonight, fest on Saturday, and on Monday. So today I’ll be sharing some goofing about in the borough of my birth, as well as prepping for the show at the Jalopy. If any of y’all are in NYC, would absolutely love to see you there.

Meet NewSong Music earlybird finalist R.O. Shapiro, who answered our Q&A! R.O. will join seven other finalists to network and compete at the NewSong Performance & Songwriting Competition finals on Saturday, November 16, at Citizen Vinyl .

NewSong Music: What was your journey to music — were you classically trained? From a family of musicians? Self-taught?

R.O. "I grew up doing a lot of musical theater, that’s really how I started singing. I didn’t pick up guitar until my senior year of high school, but as soon as I got a few chords down I started writing my own songs almost immediately."

Slow Runner is the creation of Michael Flynn, an Americana-adjacent singer-songwriter based in Western North Carolina. Michael / Slow Runner is also the 2021 NewSong Music Grand Prize Winner. As part of his prize, Michael recorded his latest album, YESTERDAY DON’T FAIL ME NOW, at Citizen Studios. It’s co-produced by Michael and Gar Ragland, released on the NewSong Recordings label, and LPs will be pressed at Citizen Vinyl.

YDFMN is slated for release on October 11, with a live show at at 8 p.m. $15 advance / $18 at the door.

Meet NewSong Competition finalists Admiral Radio — the husband-and-wife duo of Becca and Coty. Together, they aim to leave listeners better than they found them. With a personal sincerity and honest performance, you might shed a few tears and roll with laughter. The duo recently won first place at the 2024 Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Competition and 2024 LEAF NewSong Songwriting Competition, and was a finalist in the legendary Kerrville New Folk Competition, International Songwriting Competition, and more. Admiral Radio is taking leaps of faith to share their songs and stories with listeners across the country, inviting you to gather ‘round the radio in modern times.

Their grand prize winner at the 2024 LEAF / NewSong Competition in May advanced them into the finals of this year’s NewSong Performance & Songwriting Competition.

NewSong: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?�

Admiral Radio: Something that sounds just familiar enough that you can feel at ease, like an old favorite song your Nana used to hum down the hallway, but something new that you can’t quite place, that speaks to the times we’re in. Just two voices, close harmonies, and a guitar or two.
