Slow Runner celebrates the release of Yesterday Don't Fail Me Now at Citizen Vinyl on Friday, January 24th. 7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show. $15 advance / $18 at the door. Moon Bride opens!

Slow Runner is the creation of Michael Flynn, an Americana-adjacent singer-songwriter based in Western North Carolina. Michael was the 2021 NewSong Music Songwriting Competition Grand Prize Winner; part of his prize package included recording an album at Citizen Studios with producer Gar Ragland. The record, which was also pressed at Citizen Vinyl, was released on all platforms on October 11.

Indie-pop artist Moon Bride (formerly Carly Taich — the 2018 LEAF NewSong Competition winner), writes about doubt, faith, fear and love in a way that’s anything but cliche. Framing her self-aware lyrics with cinematic orchestration and unusual melodies that take us to another dimension, there is a storybook mysticism to all Moon Bride touches, with one foot planted in this reality.

Reclamation — the 10th album from 2017 NewSong Music Grand Prize winner Crys Matthews — dropped last week, and it's incredible. Recorded in Nashville, this is Crys' country album. It's also a revolutionary album, speaking truth to power just when brave voices are most needed.

China Langford is an events promoter, musician, and arts administrator currently based in Old Fort, NC. She owns and runs the independent live music production company , originally founded in San Francisco in 2019, and now operating at multiple venues in the Asheville area. She recently opened the small music venue Lonesome Station Old Fort at Seeker Coffee. She grew up in Black Mountain surrounded by singer-songwriters and immersed in the rich musical landscape of Western NC. Her solo music is released under the name China Smith.

is best known as the drummer for the alternative rock group Ween. He has also worked with Eagles of Death Metal, Chocolate Genius, the Wooden Soldiers, Elysian Fields and 3 Input Woman, and has been a touring member of the Mike Dillon Band on multiple occasions. A multi-instrumentalist, Coleman is also the singer-songwriter for his own group Amandla. Since 2017, he has co-owned and actively managed SoundSpace@Rabbit’s, a music rehearsal and art studio facility inside of a 1947 Black-owned tourist court and soul food cafe’ known as Rabbit’s Motel, in the historically African American district of Southside, Asheville, North Carolina.
ragland is a producer, musician, and president and co-founder of the NewSong Music Group. He co-founded NewSong Music in 2001 in Boston. In 2005 Ragland moved to New York City, working out of his studio in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. In 2012, he relocated with his wife and three children to Asheville, NC, to take up residence at Echo Mountain Recording Studios; and in 2020 founded Citizen Vinyl, presenting sponsor of NewSong Music. Ragland is a voting member of the Recording Academy (Grammys), and formerly served for five years as the board chair of the Asheville Area Arts Council (ArtsAVL).

Meet NewSong Competition finalists Admiral Radio — the husband-and-wife duo of Becca and Coty. Together, they aim to leave listeners better than they found them. With a personal sincerity and honest performance, you might shed a few tears and roll with laughter. The duo recently won first place at the 2024 Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Competition and 2024 LEAF NewSong Songwriting Competition, and was a finalist in the legendary Kerrville New Folk Competition, International Songwriting Competition, and more. Admiral Radio is taking leaps of faith to share their songs and stories with listeners across the country, inviting you to gather ‘round the radio in modern times.

Their grand prize winner at the 2024 LEAF / NewSong Competition in May advanced them into the finals of this year’s NewSong Performance & Songwriting Competition.

NewSong: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before?

Admiral Radio: Something that sounds just familiar enough that you can feel at ease, like an old favorite song your Nana used to hum down the hallway, but something new that you can’t quite place, that speaks to the times we’re in. Just two voices, close harmonies, and a guitar or two.

NewSong Music: What inspired you to become a songwriter?

Lindsay: I wanted to be a songwriter ever since I understood that it was a job! I used to pore over the lyric sleeves of every CD I got, and memorize every word. Once I got a bit older, I started writing songs, and felt like I could really express certain things through the medium that I couldn’t express elsewhere. I was hooked!

Erika: Singing and making up melodies have always been a sort of default mode for me. And I like poetry, so it was sort of a natural progression of self expression. Also, I was very inspired by other people making music around me.

Paula Boggs has written and recorded four full-length albums fronting the Paula Boggs Band, and has also recorded two EPs. She is a voting member and a Governor of The Recording Academy, Pacific Northwest Chapter Board, and member of the Americana Music Association.

Paula Boggs: We recorded our 5th studio album Sumatra last summer at Grammy-winning Tucker Martine’s Portland, OR studio. It releases in 2025 and features The Blind Boys of Alabama and Brandi Carlile’s longtime cellist Josh Neumann among other guest artists.

NewSong Music: What was your journey to music — were you classically trained? From a family of musicians? Self-taught?

R.O. "I grew up doing a lot of musical theater, that’s really how I started singing. I didn’t pick up guitar until my senior year of high school, but as soon as I got a few chords down I started writing my own songs almost immediately."
