In this episode we welcome Fatima Borrmann, Amy Carney and Sean Scally to talk about the challenging but fascinating topic of eugenics and gender in history and literature.

You can listen to the episode here:

The three of them also had to reply to our special surprise question and these are their answers:

Fatima:
Rose Macaulay’s What Not (1918)

Amy:
Aldous Huxle’s Brave New World (1932)

Sean:
Oxford Handbook on the History of Eugenics
and wants to also add: Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Heart of a Dog (1925)

Fatima Borrmann is a Phd researcher at KU Leuven; she did her MA in English Literature at the Ruhr Universität Bochum, her research project is part of the MDRN research lab’s “Literary Knowledge (1890-1950): Modernisms and the Sciences in Europe” project. The “Eugenic Women” subproject researches literature by German and British female authors who engaged in the widespread debate on eugenic science during the late 19th and early 20th century. She has published on medicine, eugenics and motherhood in the works of Sarah Grand, Mona Caird, Helene Böhlau and Maria Eichhorn.

Amy Carney is an Associate Professor of History at Penn State Behrend. Her first book, Marriage and Fatherhood in the N**i SS, examines how SS leaders selectively utilized eugenics to encourage their men to get married and have children. These families were to serve as the new racial elite of the Third Reich. Her current research focuses on the lives of two Jewish families who emigrated from Germany in the late 1930s. Amy is also a co-editor at H-Eugenics.

Sean Scally is a PhD candidate in transnational comparative history at Central Michigan University. He is currently completing a PhD dissertation that examines the intersections of masculinity and eugenics in Britain and the United States during the late 19th and early 20th century. Sean is also a co-editor of H-Eugenics.

After a two-months break, we are back with our second season! This time, Leandro and Jessica will meet various scholars from all over the world who have at least one thing in common: their work focusses on gender (and, as you cannot separate it from, sexuality, race, class, colonialism, intersectionality, politics …).

In each episode we invite at least two scholars who have mostly not known each other before the episode to chat about their work and their experience in academia. In this first introductory episode, Leandro and Jessica tell you all about how they came to this idea, why they wanted to do it and also give you some short insights into their own work and why gender research is so important for them.

Also, there is a special surprise question waiting for every guest at the end of the episodes: “If there was only one book that you could suggest to our listeners, which one would it be?” Of course, Jessica and Leandro also had to answer this question, and their reply was:

Leandro: Yuderkys Espinosa Miñoso, Diana Gómez Correal, Karina Ochoa Muñoz (eds) 2014: “Tejiendo de otro modo: feminismo, epistemologia y apuestas descoloniales en Abya Yala.”

Jessica: Judith Butler (2016): “Frames of War”

Finally! The crowning finale of the season “Feel Good Academia” is a revisiting of the amazing workshop “Clearing Pathways: A Workshop on Creating Space for the Work You Want to Do!” Prof Melissa Wilcox (Melissa M. Wilcox) conducted at the EnGender2021 conference last year. But this time, Leandro (Leandro Wallace) and Jessica (Jessica Albrecht) get the chance to finally ask their own questions and talk about the need to find your own way, your own group and your mentors in academia. This really is an episode that will make you feel good! Don’t miss it.

CfP

We are happy to invite you to our second En-Gender Conference!

As last year, the conference will be held online. We specifically invite graduate students, early career researchers and scholars outside of academia.

The theme of this year’s conference is: art, activism, and the role of the academic!

Abstracts (150 words) for 20 minute papers can be on this topic specifically or focus on your individual research (relating to gender, q***r, trans and intersectional studies) – we are looking forward to an interdisciplinary and international exchange on gender research!

To join as a speaker, fill out this form until 31 May: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1JIAWei6ecwnTwHLba5_E72u1yMbAKm_NC9o3-AyXvOk/edit?usp=drive_fs

2021 has been an eventful year here at En-Gender.

This is why, this time, we had to publish two posts to reflect on what we did this year and why we think it is so important.

Read Leandro Wallace's post reflecting on a year of En-Gender here:
https://engenderacademia.wordpress.com/2021/12/17/a-year-of-en-gender/

Also make sure to look at Jessica Albrecht's posts on the need of empowerment within academia:

A big thank goes out to all those who helped us with editing, reviewing and speaking at the conference!

Let's have an even better 2022!

Do not forget, we still have a blog - CfP

With our blog we want to reflect the different experiences of us inside and in relation to academia. As always, the contributions can be anonymous or personalized.

Possible contributions can be on the following topics:

Academia and the Pandemic
How has your perception of gender changed during the last 1,5 years?
How was your research affected?
What are your experiences of online conferences - do you want to go "back to normal"?

Art, Exhibitions, Museums
Do you have recommendations?
What were your experiences with new forms of exhibitions?
How has art changed in the last years?
Are there any pieces of art, museums or artists you want to highlight?

Utopia Academia
In a perfect world, how would academia look like for you?
What would be the first things you would like to change?
How can we get there?

Dystopia Academia
What bad experiences have you made?
What would you suggest to others to cope?
What might have brought you to leave academia?
