We’ve got copies of the disc at Miami’s Sweat Records and Technique Records, and two of the record’s artists, Phaxas and Richard Vergez are spinning at Technique - maybe they’ll even sign your copy. I met João Orecchia in 2009 when O.E. released his (desperately underrated) Hands & Feet album. Seriously, if you haven’t heard this, you’re missing out on some electronic wizardry from a guy who took looping to a level. Shortly after, I met Tobias Vethake (AKA Sicker Man), whose impressive, varied body of work is humbling to say the least. Their combined discographies, O.E. and otherwise, span drone, glitch, ambient, hip-hop, jazz, rock, pop, and beyond. With Pluton/Neptune, they’ve utilized their affinities for improvised performance, coupled with a 20-year collaborative practice, and presented it in long-form.

Now, when I said I met these artists, I meant only in the digital sense – I haven’t been to Johannesburg or Berlin, yet. Like most of the other O.E. stuff, these collaborations have been remote, often having to recall time zones while awaiting email replies, and factoring in clever customs declarations for tapes and LPs. But through all this time and all this music, I feel like I’ve come to know these artists personally as I’ve watched their sounds transform and transmute. I’m always proud to work with them in the capacities I’m able, and excited when they reach out with new projects. In their own words “Pluton/Neptune sounds of old friends telling stories of adventures through an intense bubbling dialogue in musical style that’s developed over 20 years.” We hope you enjoy listening in on this sonic conversation. –Emile Milgrim, Miami, FL (2020)

When SAAVIK approached OE about helping release their debut EP I was beyond excited. After seeing their first gig at the VIDIUM MIAMI Sustain//Decay fest in October 2019 I knew they were creating something special. Beyond the sounds being something that moved me immediately, knowing they were being made by folks whose audio/visual aesthetics I’ve always held in high regards further compounded how solid this project was to me. And so plans were made and dates were set, and as with such things, other THINGS came up. But this time, one other THING was very different. Tonight would have been a massive, live, IN PERSON celebration of the sonic architecture of some of Miami’s most-celebrated experimental musicians. There would have been a physical manifestation (maybe some day there still will be), drunken hugs would have abounded, sci-fi nerd jokes would have been cracked, and earplugs would have been coveted. But despite tonight not being the joyful scene celebration we planned, the music is still here for you, at SAAVIK’s urging that this NEEDED to be heard, NOW. And they were right. SAAVIK - S/T is out now on Bandcamp and exactly 63 streaming platforms. Birthed from the Miami Underground Scene, SAAVIK is a punk/metal/industrial "supergroup" of sorts. Its members are or have been involved in influential groups including Holly Hunt, Bleeth, Laboratory, Haochi, Beings, Cavity, and Floor. Heavily distorted bass, massive, effects-laden guitar tones, space opera-sounding synths, relentless, tom-heavy drumming, and haunting vocals draw you into an otherworldy space.

SAAVIK’s eponymous first transmission tells the familiar story of a leader who’s lost their way. With heavy nods to the fantasy universes of Roddenberry and Lovecraft, this four-part narrative explores existential themes of abandonment, betrayal, assimilation, metamorphosis, and rebirth. While lyrically sparse, further implications of the story are conveyed sonically, relying heavily on rhythm, drone, and texture to set pacing and moods.
