According to the USDA, the state has had 1,963 cases of the parasitic fly thus far, infecting mainly bovine but also equine and canine species. One-hundred twenty-five NWS cases are currently active in the region.

Feral hogs, as well as outdoor and transitionally raised pigs, could complicate containment if the parasite moves north.
