Kosmos Festival interview with the one Alek Száhala!
INTERVIEW WITH ALEK SZÁHALA
Continuing with the harder side of our lineup, we’re proud to introduce the legendary Alek Száhala, who will be rocking on the FINRG Recordings side of Levitation Station.
Hard NRG has fallen a bit to the margins of the Finnish electronic music scene since its glory days in the 2000’s. Do you think it is due for a comeback?
- I don’t think that Hard NRG in particular is making a comeback as, at least yet, but harder electronic music in general definitely is. When the Hard NRG and Freeform scene died somewhere in early 2010s in Finland, it was replaced by hardstyle and hardstyle only. Recently the harder electronic music events have seemingly diversified their selection of music from hardcore to J-core and hard techno, and I’m pretty sure they could easily fit some Hard NRG into their lineups, too, and that it would be well received.
How is the NRG scene abroad these days?
- Harder electronic music (Hard NRG included) seems to be on the rise in the US. I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for some time in 2022-23, and they have a very vivid rave scene with lots of great underground parties and club events, especially “So Stoked” at the DNA Lounge in SF. Many of the events are multi-genre from hardcore to hard trance, and from psytrance to riddim, but definitely hear some Hard NRG classics being played there, too, including Finnish Freeform. The crowd seems to be very open and welcoming to new genres.
- Seattle apparently has something similar going on, and of course NYC. In fact, many if not most of the new fans, promoters, label managers and DJs who have connected with me are from the US, whereas back in the days they used to be from Australia and the UK. Back then, North America was completely silent except for the French speaking Canada, so I definitely see a major change of pattern here.
- In Europe, Hungary and Poland seem to have something going on, and of course the UK has all these old names still playing regularly.
What do you have in store for Kosmos? Can we expect some nostalgic bangers?
- Of course! Some old stuff, but also some new stuff. I have been pretty active lately what comes to making new music. It’s been refreshing to make some Freeform, Hard NRG and even Hardcore after all these years.
Thank you! Alek Száhala will be pulverizing the pinewood forest of Levitation Station on Saturday at 4 AM!
