If there’s anyone who understands the urgency of preserving film heritage, it is undoubtedly Ehsan Khoshbakht, director of Bologna’s Cinema Ritrovato, the most important festival for rediscovering cinema from the past. In his second feature film as director, Khoshbakht introduces us to Ahmad Jurghanian, a collector who hid thousands of films to prevent them from being destroyed by the Iranian Regime. ‘Cellulloid Underground’ follows the friendship between two inveterate film lovers, demonstrating the power that art holds for both bonding people together and as a weapon of resistance against authoritarianism and collective amnesia. Of course, the film features the meticulous labor of resurrecting forgotten footage in all its splendor. Fascinating images from essential film work that, thanks to figures like Khoshbakht, continues to amaze us with its resplendent past.

TOWARDS A FILM THEORY FROM BELOW:
Archival Film and the Aesthetics of the Crack-Up
A new book by Jiri Anger

Published by Bloomsbury Publishing
Pub. date: June 27, 2024

Operating between film theory, media philosophy, archival practice, and audiovisual research, Jiri Anger focuses on the relationship between figuration and materiality in early films, experimental found footage cinema, and video essays.

Would it be possible to do film theory from below, through the perspective of moving-image objects, of their multifarious details and facets, however marginal, unintentional, or aleatory they might be? Could we treat scratches, stains, and shakes in archival footage as speculatively and aesthetically generative features? Do these material actors have the capacity to create “weird shapes” within the figurative image that decenter, distort, and transform the existing conceptual and methodological frameworks?

Building on his theoretical as well as practical experience with the recently digitized corpus of the first Czech films, created by Jan Kríženecký between 1898 and 1911, Jiri Anger demonstrates how technological defects and accidents in archival films shape their aesthetic function and our understanding of the materiality of film in the digital age.

Su Friedrich and Péter Forgács à la Filmoteca de Catalunya
March 2024

The Filmoteca of Catalunya pays tribute to Su Friedrich and Péter Forgács with a great retrospective program of masterpieces.

Hungarian filmmaker Péter Forgács has built a universe of his own that has been described as a “mixture of anthropology, theatre, documentary and private diary”. His cinema delves into the European collective memory of the 20th century based on private filming and unpublished images from archives, including that of the Filmoteca de Catalunya. It is through found footage and his personal interpretation of the archives, that Forgács gives traumatic historical events a new perspective.

With a clear feminist and humanist consciousness, with honesty, sensitivity and a fine sense of humor, American filmmaker Su Friedrich has made more of twenty films that start from her personal experiences, emotions, dreams, fears and desires to explore forms of self-knowledge and knowledge of the world. Her films have the virtue of be accessible and enjoyable for a wide audience, even for those who are not used to experimental, feminist, or q***r cinema. Coming from The Punto de Vista festival, the Filmoteca de Catalunya will offer a retrospective of her work.

Still images:
- ‘Hide and Seek’ (Su Friedrich, 1996).
- ‘The Maelstrom: A Family Chronicle’ (Péter Forgács, 1997).
- ‘Sink or Swim’ (Su Friedrich, 1990).
- ‘El Perro Negro: Stories from the Spanish Civil War’ (Péter Forgács, 2005).

Italy: Fire and Ashes
By Céline Gailleurd and Olivier Bohler, 2021

‘Italy: Fire and Ashes’ is a richly documented, lyrical, and visionary journey into an unknown universe: the origins of Italian silent cinema, an epic and poetic tale of the early years of Italian cinema, from 1896 to 1930, narrated by Isabella Rossellini for the Italian and English versions and by F***y Ardant for the French one.

An art and a dazzling industry that gave birth to the first international stars, to hundreds of peplum, melò and adventure films, and launched the first filmmakers. Its world of fasts and romantic deliriums, between Verdi’s symbolism and D’Annunzio’s decadentism, soon reached international fame, fascinating crowds, intellectuals and artists from all over Europe, reaching out to the United States and South America. The protagonists of ITALIA – Fire and Ashes are male and female directors, actors and actresses, technicians and critics who contributed to the exuberant originality of that cinema.

THE REALITY OF THE IMAGE: THE CINEMA OF THOM ANDERSEN
Cineteca Madrid, Spain
January 27 - 31, 2024

“The films and writings of Thom Andersen might be said to subscribe to a similar kind of guardedly humanistic postmodernism. Straddling the worlds of film theory, history, and criticism, running the gamut from primitive silent cinema to the Hollywood mainstream to the avant-garde and everything in between, Andersen’s tastes are nothing if not eclectic.” —Matthew Cole Levine, Found Footage Magazine, issue #5.

Cineteca Madrid presents a complete retrospective on the American filmmaker Thom Andersen, an unique opportunity to enjoy his masterpieces on the big screen.

Lyrical Nitrate: Experimentations with archival films
CCCB - Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona, Spain
January 21, 2024

Keep this date in mind.

Chief curator of the Eye Filmmuseum Giovanna Fossati, presents a selection of experimental found footage films from the Eye Filmmuseum collection in Amsterdam. From the poetic ode to silent cinema in the classic found-footage masterpiece Lyrical Nitrate to the contemporary explorations of materiality in Liquidator and Under Saturn (Act 1), this screening delves into the various approaches of archival reuse and explores the visualization of materiality, decomposition, and digital manipulation.

- 'Lyrisch Nitraat' (Peter Delpeut, 1991).
Filmmaker, writer and former deputy director of the Dutch Filmmuseum Peter Delpeut draws from the Desmet Collection (1907-1916) to craft a visually stunning tribute to early cinema. This found-footage classic film showcases the richness of cinematography, mise en scène, acting, and colour in silent cinema from the Desmet Collection, a UNESCO Memory of the World treasure.

- 'Liquidator' (Karel Doing, 2010).
Experimental filmmaker Karel Doing’s study of the non-fiction film 'Haarlem' (1922) unfolds as a fascinating exploration of film’s materiality. Undertaken during the restoration of the original film, Liquidator is an experimental journey into nitrate decomposition within the digital domain.

- 'Under Saturn (Act 1)' (Alexandra Navrtil, 2018).
Created during Alexandra Navratil’s Artist in Residency at Eye, this work explores the materiality of early non-fiction films (ca. 1895–1935). Focused on industrial films related to coal or oil, alongside microscopic images of blood-cells and micro-organisms, Navratil employs digital tools to provide a highly original visual and aural perspective on the archival material.
