Our episodes about When Harry Met Sally are out and it’s ’s first time watching the movie! (If these are the important things you sacrifice to make time for a PhD, it’s simply not worth it folks.) Last week Vanessa and Hannah discuss friendship and timing as they relate to love stories. This week, they do a close study of the final scene of the movie. Next week we’re watching You’ve Got Mail!

We have a new host (the delightful and brilliant )! We have a new logo! We’re finally watching movies other than How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days!

Over the next 10 weeks we’re watching Meg Ryan movies and discussing her role as Rom-Com royalty. This week and next week we’re analyzing Sleepless in Seattle. Tune in to hear Hannah and Vanessa talking about white femininity, the mysticism of children in film, and how much they love Bill Pullman’s character. Plus, learn everything you need to know about hiring a private detective from .

Next week: a close study of the final scene!

We’re getting towards the end of our How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days break-down, but obviously we can’t wrap things up without talking about that iconic dress! And it’s not the only outfit of Andy’s worth discussing. Watching this movie, it’s clear that the costume choices are doing A LOT. When Andy is “just being herself” she dresses one way, and when she’s being “nightmare woman no man could ever endure” she has a whole different wardrobe. (Spoiler: Annoying Andie is more feminine. Obviously. What’s more annoying than femininity?)

To help us break-down these looks, as well as Matthew McConaughey’s simple but s*xy t-shirts, we’ve invited costume designer on the show this week.

At the end of the episode, joins us once again to analyze a scene of the movie — this time we’re watching the steamy (literally) shower scene where Ben and Andie finally have s*x for the first time.

Which version of Andie is your favorite?

This week, Vanessa is joined by Ruseell Meeuf, a professor of journalism and media, to discuss celebrity, chemistry and the star-power of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’ two leading actors. Tune in for a conversation about the history of the movie star and of Hollywood in the early 2000s.

As always, at the end of the episode Vanessa is joined by Hannah Rehak (Not Sorry’s resident reticent viewer of How to Lose a Guy), to look closely at Andie and Ben’s big fight. Together, Vanessa and Hannah consider masculine showmanship and the way Matthew McConaughey performs his masculinity for this movie geared towards women of the early aughts.

After talking about setting last episode, we wanted to dig even deeper into the physical space inhabited by Ben and Andie. How does the design of their workplaces, apartments, and date-nights affect how we perceive each of their characters? When we look at the two pictures above, why does one setting immediately register as feminine and the other masculine-- independent of the gender of the characters pictured in each.

To help us tackle this topic, we're joined by Production Designer Stuart Blatt. Stuart walks us through the role of Production Designer, how he works with other crew members, and what he noticed specifically when watching How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. To listen to the full episode, head to the link in our stories or look us up wherever you find your podcasts!

For our annual Don't Be a Dursley fundraiser at Not Sorry, we are again supporting the wonderful organization On The Rise . On The Rise’s work begins with individuals experiencing homelessness in Cambridge, Massachusetts and continues if and when they secure housing. From their origin as a women’s organization, their programs have evolved toward inclusion of those historically and structurally oppressed on the basis of gender. In today's special bonus episode, Vanessa sits down with On The Rise’s Director of Clinical Services, Charyti Reiter to talk about misconceptions around homeless. We hear also from one of On The Rise's participants, JS. You can help us reach our goal of $10k by donating here: bit.ly/dbad2024

On the newest episode of Hot & Bothered, Vanessa sits down with Hannah Giorgis of The Atlantic to learn about what Hannah looks for, as a critic, when assessing romantic comedies. Hannah breaks down the typical three-act structure of a rom-com and talks through the s*xual politics of the film. We particularly enjoyed the trivia she shared about why HTLAGITD's leads don't sleep together on their first date-- can you guess what drove that choice? You can find a link to the episode and to the articles Hannah referenced in our stories.

For our first deep-dive into How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, we wanted to look at the history of the rom-com genre. To help us dig into it, we called up the incredible professor Kathleen Karlyn, the founding director of the Cinema Studies program at University of Oregon and author of The Unruly Woman: Gender and the Genres of Laughter. We wanted to know: Where does the history of the rom-com start? What do people mean when they say something is a ‘battle of the s*xes’ movie? and how do gender norms and ideals inform this particular movie? You can hear the whole episode at the link in our stories or wherever you get your podcasts.

And don't forget-- if you're enjoying the new season, please take a minute to give a review on Apple Podcasts or share with a friend. We love what we're making and we want to be sure it finds its audience!

We don't have a new Hot & Bothered episode today, but you *CAN* catch Vanessa on Pod and Prejudice, discussing part 1 of the 1996 TV adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, starring Kate Beckinsdale BEFORE she got her teeth fixed.

We love Pod and Prejudice and are excited to work with them any time we're asked, but we were ESPECIALLY thrilled to be asked now as it gives us a chance to share about ROM-FEST, their upcoming event with The Ripped Bodice Bookstore and Fishmarket Theatre Co. In addition to featuring a live Pod and Prejudice show, this ROM-FEST will shamelessly toast lady literature, fanfiction, s**t, and everything in between with play readings, podcast shows, and a few other surprises. Join them for a weekend of artistic happenings that are sure to titillate, delight, and amuse. They've got a zine-making workshop, a play about fanfiction, and an intimacy writing workshop, just to name a few. For a full schedule of events and tickets, check out romfest2024.my.canva.site.

It's here! Season Five of Hot & Bothered begins today and it's all about the love stories that most impacted Vanessa: the cinematic love stories that she and her film-worshipping family devoured. That's right: this season, we're talking movies! And our first episode is available NOW-- you can find it at the link in our stories or wherever you get your podcasts.

Soon, Vanessa will be joined by her new co-host, the incomparable Dr. Hannah McGregor, formerly of the Witch, Please podcast and presently of Material Girls. But before they dive in, Vanessa needs to equip herself with the frameworks and vocabulary for critically assess films with the rigor she's brought to literature in our first four seasons.

So, together with film scholars and experts, Vanessa is going to devote ten episodes to the 2003 rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. If you don't know the film, here's what matters: It has a perfect yellow dress. It has a karaoke battle. It has Matthew McConaughey on a motorcycle. It’s basically the epitome of everything people consider ‘silly’ about the genre-- but also everything rom-com fans love about it. With help from our expert guests, Vanessa is going to puzzle out just what makes this film WORK: what cinematic tricks and tools is it using to captivate its audience?

And what happens after these ten episodes? Well, we think you should listen to the first episode to find out.

Season 3 of Bridgerton is COMING, and so is our pilgrimage dedicated to Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn, the book upon which it is based! From August 27th-31st, Vanessa, Margaret, and the pilgrims lucky enough to join them will be exploring Penelope and Colin's love story through the theme of "heartbreak." While exploring Bath, the gorgeous city where Bridgerton and many other period dramas are filmed, participants will reflect on how heartbreak informs the most satisfying happily ever afters, processing their own heartbreaks while imagining a future beyond them. We will be staying at Eight, a boutique hotel in the heart of Bath, housed inside two 18th-century townhouses just steps away from the Roman baths that give the city their name. It will be a unique experience and we are so excited for you to join us! We have payment plans available to make the cost manageable for more people.

We dropped episodes featuring on both and last week. On HPST, she discussed book 5, ch. 14 through the theme of “resentment” and shared a story about the big brother—pictured here— who inadvertently guides her around it. On Hot & Bothered, she got to speak about what makes Persuasion so special amongst Austen’s novels.

If while listening to either, you thought “Hey, Margaret seems like she’d be great company for gazing at Georgian architecture or hiking across a lonely moor,” well, good news! You could do BOTH with her next year, as she will be the logistics coordinator for our Bridgerton Pilgrimage in Bath next August *and* our Wuthering Heights Pilgrimage in West Yorkshire in September.

While and will make sure your class discussions are vibrant and illuminating, Margaret will be there to make sure each bus contains every pilgrim, that every pilgrim has the correct packed lunch, and sundry other tiny details such as these. She will carry the mental load so you don’t have, while also happily chatting with you about which Bridgerton sibling is the best or the profound shade contained within Charlotte Brontë’s introduction to Wuthering Heights.

This is how stacked ’s faculty is: even the person on sandwich duty is a great hang. We hope some of you get to experience it!

Well, the sad day is finally here: today is our final episode of Live from Pemberley and, even more distressing, the last with co-host Lauren Sandler (at least for the time being). She’s stepping back so she can write a REALLY fabulous book, so it’s not all bad news. As for the podcast, we are currently working very hard on our next season which will launch later in the year. Until then, we have a Patreon-only mini-series hosted by Vanessa coming your way! If you want to dig into other Austen novels and the adaptations that followed, become a Patreon supporter — (there's an extensive backlog of perks for you to enjoy, too!). Greetings to you, Bothered Hotties! Unfortunately, the part of Cornwall where .noodler and are staying, while RICH with GLORIOUS SCENERY and SHEEP, is largely without wifi, leaving Ariana with no ability to share the beautifully edited episode presently within her laptop. Our loss is ’s gain— and (more importantly) only temporary. The episode that should have aired today will be out Monday, when Ariana has returned to less beautiful but more wifi-rich climes.

On today’s episode, we begin our run of Pride & Prejudice adaptations with an interview with Jo Baker about Longbourn, her servants-eye-view retelling of Pride & Prejudice that adores. To accompany the episode, we have pictures of: (1) Longbourn’s Spanish edition (isn’t it cute!?), (2) Groombridge Place, which stood in for Longbourn in Joe Wright’s 2005 Pride & Prejudice adaptation, and (3) Luckington Court, which represented it in the 1995 film. Which Longbourn do you like better?

Terrific news, aspiring pilgrims: our first pilgrimage of 2024 is now available to book! And it's an extremely special one because, for the first time ever, the three creators of our Harry Potter and the Sacred Text podcast are leading a Harry Potter pilgrimage *together*! That's right: in May 2024, Vanessa Zoltan, Casper ter Kuile, and Ariana Nedelman will be leading a pilgrimage dedicated to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, examining the text through the theme of "escape"! We will be staying at Erth Retreat exploring the gorgeous countryside, coastline, and woodlands of Devonshire at the height of England's bluebell season. For more information, head to bit.ly/hpdevon.

A quick note for anyone new to our work with Harry Potter: we condemn J.K. Rowling and her transphobia. This pilgrimage, like our other programming, relies on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as a communal reference point, but in none of our work do we approach the series or JKR as moral authorities. Instead, by rigorously discussing the text, noting the ways it falls short or reads differently with our adult eyes, and processing these observations in community, we aim to teach participants how to use their relationship with the series to perceive how they’ve developed and thereby better orient their moral compasses. You can find more at the top link on the trip page.

This is what Ariana looked like as she posted today’s episode: the last chapter of Pride & Prejudice 😭

On this week’s episode, Vanessa gets to talk to the woman who started it all: Margaret Yee, the 10th grade English teacher who pressed Pride & Prejudice into Vanessa’s hands 25 years ago. Vanessa still owns the very same copy, as the photos here demonstrate.

We have so many incredible interviews about various Pride & Prejudice adaptations coming up, but we are quite wistful about leaving Lizzie and Darcy behind.
