The Legacy Of Jim Canada...
Anyone who has attended my public speaking engagements has probably heard (if you didn’t fall asleep) my bus story at least once. It’s a story about a local entrepreneur whose life is turned around after one encounter with a stranger on a bus. The stranger gets up from his bus seat, walks across the aisle, and sits down next to the entrepreneur. The stranger starts a conversation with the entrepreneur and then unselfishly starts helping him realize his dream.
I tell the story to encourage everyone to step up and help others. The message is simple: One contact can change your life.
One person I didn’t have to share this story with was Jim Canada, our Entrepreneur’s Toolbox columnist and Managing Partner/CEO for Alliance Technologies. Canada died Dec. 9 at the age of 68.
Jim spent over 30 years in the corporate world developing a career that spanned major companies, including John Deere, American Airlines and Reuters. His dream was to one day start his own company, and nearly 15 years ago he realized that dream by founding Alliance Technologies. Over the years, Canada and his company have been recognized with numerous awards and honors for his business knowledge, leadership and success.
I’m going to remember Jim for much more than his awards. I’m going to remember Jim for his dedication to helping others. It didn’t matter if a business owner had one employee or 100; Jim would spend his time listening, mentoring and assisting that owner in realizing his or her dreams. I know firsthand. Jim spent many mornings with me, helping guide me with my business. Each time we met it seemed like he knew everyone in the coffee house. He had a full “to-do” list but still carved out time for me.
He was truly the one on the bus, standing up to help others.
He was dedicated to helping small-business owners survive and thrive. He knew that to grow their dreams, business owners would need help. And he was there to deliver. He volunteered many hours each month to help these entrepreneurs grow their dreams, and the number of owners he helped are scattered around the St. Louis region. All of us, me included, are very fortunate we met Jim.
We will all miss Jim. However, his wisdom, sense of humor, friendship, advice, mentorship and examples will live with us our whole lives.
He was the guy on the bus for me and many others … and we’ll never forget him.
