Warrior. Hero. Legend. Allez Romain. 🙌🏻

I didn’t know what to expect when I first met Romain, I don’t know why, I’ve met plenty of pro cyclists. But, what I did find is that he’s a funny, charismatic, incredibly witty and a very relaxed guy - just a really top bloke. And that made my job much easier. 👌🏻

I’ve spent quite a lot of time around him at training camps and races; hanging off the back of a car chatting s**t between requests to hold his sunglasses for a photo, take his gilet off, roll a bigger gear or just ride and look cool for some video pieces or when he told me he’s about to start an effort so he can get the best photos. 🫡

One thing I learned quickly though, is that he gives it everything, no matter what it is. All the sponsor stuff? No problem, get it out of the way and then enjoy riding. Full gas efforts? No problem, get it done and then enjoy riding. Interviews and video pieces? No problem, get it out of the way and enjoy that it’s done. 🎥

At the Giro in 2024 I was lucky enough to be able to ride with the guys in Bormio on the rest day. For some reason, he wanted to climb the Stelvio…there’s a significant talent and weight discrepancy between me and them, and especially Romain. He turned to me as we headed up and said “are you ready Luis?” - I was NOT ready and was promptly dropped dying 1000 deaths as he skittled on up the mountain. Thankfully, the road was closed and they were turned around so we descended back down the little climbing we’d done… dropped again 😅 humbling to say the least.

Thanks for the good times, Romain. A hero to some, a legend to many. 👊🏻

Up in the gods 🗻

A couple of days up in the high ground with James Shaw shooting some YouTube content. Check it out on the old Tube - CyclingShawts. 📺

I’ve known James a few years now. Back in 2019 I volunteered myself to cover the Tour de Yorkshire for little old Swift Carbon Pro Cycling, so I could cut my teeth in content creation. 📸

What a race TDY was by the way. Bring it back A*O 🫡

It was my first experience of the chaos of Pro Cycling and despite being the smallest team in the race, James managed to finish 4th on GC and was the only guy that could follow Froome’s attack on the final stage into Leeds. 💪🏻

There was no expectation, I didn’t really know what I was doing, and frankly it wasn’t such great content - nothing changes eh? 🫠

But, I took a few days holiday from my then day-job and got my little toe in the door. It’s quite amazing what these opportunities can do. I’ve seen James at races since that I’ve covered, as well as others from the team at the time, ridden bikes around Mallorca with them, shot weddings and now this. 🎥

A 6 hour endurance day, dinner, fresh kick, a recovery ride, a cafe at 2550m and a little Q&A - James’ journey to EF Education-Easypost has been an interesting one 🎤

So, many moons later, we’re chatting s**t for 6 hours whilst he hacks his way around Granada and back up Sierra Nevada in preparation for the Giro. 💞

The Canadian Factor 🍁🇨🇦

A champion’s bike. Shooting bikes is always good fun, it can be a quick job, or you can take your time. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve shot, and largely the shots are the same despite the obvious differences.

Different colours. Different brands. Different components. But finding an alternative backdrop is a good challenge. A short walk from the hotel I found myself in a dark and soggy underground car park with a grill shedding some natural light on a back wall. With a bag full of camera gear, a brand new Factor Osteo VAM with a splash of Canadian maple leaves and colour.
