We at Lake Affect Magazine know how difficult it is for artists to begin and grow their professional creative career. In fact, one of the most requested things on our latest survey was about exactly that.

To that end, we reached out to a place called PathStone. PathStone is a nonprofit organization that provides not only financial assistance in the form of loans, but also education and training to help artists pursue their dreams of a professional creative career. Go to the URL below and see what PathStone can do to help you pursue yours.

Hello again, everyone. Just wanted to thank everyone again who participated in our surprise pop-up survey. I also wanted to announce the next step in the process.

Like we promised before, this is just the start of where we're headed. What we want to do now is starting with those people that initially responded. We want each of you to send us an email at [email protected] with the subject line "Impact the Arts Survey". In that email, we want you to describe just a quick few lines about what's most important to you and include your questions. Once we get those, we will turn around and get back to each of you personally.

After those initial responders are done, it's our goal to have another survey and hopefully get more feedback from even more of you. ... Stick with us and together we can build a truly helping community for our future.

Recently, we decided to do something a little different. Without any advance notice, we put up an impromptu survey asking all of you what you'd like to see most in Lake Affect Magazine. This "Impact the Arts" survey gave us an opportunity to get some starting feedback from all of you about where and what you would like to learn more about.

The initial results are in and we are pleased to announce what many of you shared with us. Now if you missed our survey, don't worry. this wasn't your only chance to share with us the direction or interests that matter to you most. As we go, we will be presenting other surveys and we hope to hear back from many, many more of you when we do.

It is through your readership, and your following, that Lake Affect Magazine will be able to grow and prosper. Together, we will be able to provide the Arts community with not only an outlet, but a resource as well, to showcase and build their efforts and expressions.

Please comment below and let us know your thoughts and feelings on these interests.

Vol. 61 Artist Feature: Ana Bellanti

Ana Bellanti (, ) is a photographer and college student based in Buffalo, New York. For this artist, the lens has become an indispensable tool, enabling the seamless combination of capturing and creating artwork. As a college student, her passion for various forms of media is palpable, driving her to continually refine her skills and carve a niche as an artist. Eager and enthusiastic about sharing her evolving creations, Ana eagerly seeks new opportunities to expand her artistic horizons.

"It was an August evening at the Point Abino Lighthouse. I was holding my father's old Blackberry cell phone far too close to my face in an attempt to capture the scene - my first photograph. I was convinced it was the best thing I had ever done, but though I lacked skill, I had uncovered a fondness for creativity that stays with me to this day.
Something about the lens has always simplified the artistic process for me. Even when sketching, I have found that observing the paper through a camera lens allows the angles and composition to be much more mentally apparent, almost as if a blueprint were projected onto my sketchbook to trace over. I seem to have discovered my tool, one that lets me both capture and create artwork to the best of my ability."

You can find Ana's piece "Enchantment" in Lake Affect Magazine Volume. 61 on page 35.

Vol. 61 Artist Feature: Cai Quirk

Cai Quirk () is a trans and genderq***r artist who focuses on the intersection of gender diversity throughout history, its erasure, and contemporary reclamation and restoryation. Their self-portrait series 'Transcendence' engages with connections between gender, mythology, and nature-based spirituality.

Transcendence explores many paths beyond supposed binaries: male and female, night and day, land and sea, earth and sky, life and death, self and other, self and earth. In the spirit of myths, this series transcends boundaries and identities to reach a deeply human experience of connection. The self-portrait photographs and visual stories open doors to new possibilities through stories of creation, rebirth, and journey.

"In a society that tries to erase the presence of q***r, transgender, and non-binary folks, we must share our stories, whether these are the everyday realities of our lives or mythic tales of realities deeper than ordinary truths. Binary ways of seeing the world will not simply disappear — we must actively replace them with ways of seeing and honoring fluidity as natural and necessary. Through the powerful act of q***r restoryation, Transcendence invites people on a journey of empowerment, inspiration, and healing." - Cai Quirk

A Blast from the Past: Revisiting our 'Pictures in 1000 Words' Interviews!!

"Inspiration is an odd dog—for me, it can come in many shapes and forms: a bit of overheard dialogue, a story in a newspaper, the woman fi*****ng the tulips at Wegmans and muttering that her father was a salt shaker." - Sarah Freligh

With a rich tapestry of adventures that includes reporting on cycling races in the picturesque Italian countryside and delving into the world of poetry, Sarah has seamlessly transitioned between genres, showcasing a deep understanding of the delicacies of storytelling. Vol. 61 Artist Feature: Tim Winter

Tim Winter () is a fine artist based in Pittsford, New York. He works in the studio and en plein air. Painting primarily in oils, Tim specializes in modern impressionist landscapes. He exhibits his paintings in galleries around Upstate New York, Boston, and his online gallery. Tim is a Signature Member of the Rochester Art Club.

“As an outdoorsman, the idea of exploration is ingrained in my bones. I love being able to take my instincts as a hiker and fisherman and use them to discover the next inspiring subject, which often includes a good hike. The discovery continues in paying attention to the way light and atmosphere affect a scene. The more I paint outside, the more aware, and inspired I am by its evolving nature. I feel I’ve succeeded if I can quickly capture it and deliver my perception of being there in the moment”.
-Tim Winter

Tim will showcase his artwork at the Rochester Art Club Fall Show at Barnes and Noble in Pittsford on Nov. 5th. See rochesterartclub.org for more information.

Vol. 61 Artist Feature: Peggy Kehoe

Peggy Kehoe () a visionary artist whose work transcends traditional boundaries, delving into a world of vibrant colors, lines, and shapes that invite viewers on a journey through time and memory.

“Expressionistic colors, lines and shapes surround the recognizable subjects in my paintings; underlapping and overlapping them, partially obscuring them, as if they are spirits or fading memories of times past. My intuitive brush marks represent the restless and transcendent life forces that I imagine for the subjects I portray. I’m always searching for content that I envision as having spiritual undercurrents or allegorical narratives. I think of my paintings as palimpsests. The translucent layers suggesting archetypal characters from vaguely remembered stories, fading in and out of mysterious partially rendered landscapes. ”

Vol. 61 Artist Feature: Anshul Roy

Anshul Roy () is a visual artist from Ahmedabad, India, pursuing his MFA in Art Photography from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. His artistic practice is inspired by Postcolonial discourses, exploring issues like identity, memory and cultural representation, with a specific interest in probing how photography was employed for ‘othering’ during the British Raj in India and how these ethnographic photos exist in our contemporary institutional archives.

His project 'Rage Against the Archive' questions the exploitation of colonial-era photos now sold as 'Fine Art Prints' by the New York Public Library. He subverts this by altering the website code, replacing traumatic photos with subversive text to challenge colonial ideologies and the commodification of people of color. This critical approach aims to restore dignity to his ancestors and expose how digital archives can perpetuate colonial exploitation.

Anshul also has a hobby of street photography.
His images capture candid moments in everyday life, skillfully framed and composed to
convey a sense of authenticity and the essence of urban or street scenes.

Brzustowicz

A native of Rochester, NY, Victoria Brzustowicz (Victoria B Creative) graduated from Wells College with a BA in Studio Art. She co-founded and currently serves as Chair of the Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters, a group of artists who meet to paint outside the studio. She is a Flower City Arts Center affiliate, where she teaches drawing, painting, linoleum block printing, and oil painting workshops. She also teaches oil painting at the Art Stop.

"Painting is a combination of observation and exploration for me, not literal reporting. Whether a plein air or studio piece, each painting follows its own trajectory, which I discover as the painting develops. I want the viewer to feel the life and energy that attracted me to a subject matter."
