The Chiminea at Riverside Radio The Chiminea, is lit for the first time on Friday 16th January at 11pm. , The relaxed long game, musical, journalistic, conversational, comedic, dramatic.

The show is named after the organic garden gizmo in whose glow it was discussed, and hopefully the bespoke bunch of regulars and interviewees who'll be joining host Andy Bungay will feel like your kind of late-night gathering. We're looking forward to your company when the mood takes you across the weekend.

I was on my way to cover the opening of a rooftop bar just now when the heavens opened and I was among the hat and brolly-less. I'm assured they have a Plan B tonight and we'll review the no doubt excellent lineage next week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgrLATb75No This is an eloquent slice of musical history. I'm pretty certain that Ray turned up at our secondary school once or twice where BSO players were Peris ( how luck y we were), possibly in the Sinfonietta when Simon 'Baby' Rattle won the John Player competition in 1970 something. Above all it talks about the idea of British professionalism as it rapidly evolved, how and why.

I went to see 'Accolade' , having been intrigued by the ad playing before my radio show. The ad ambiguosly and craftily suggests there here and now of cancel culture - writer and reluctant talking head with a shadow side goes Icarus- and in fact Emlyn Williams, of all people , in 1959 is prophetic of where are now , as some of the inventively simple scene changing suggests. Honeysuckle Weeks is a kind of Celia Johnson of what would eventually become swingin' London, but then was anything but .The writers; nemesis , a sort of Walter Mitty with more than a bit of Hamlet , is an extraordinary turn as is the writers' son, developmentally thwarted by privilege, who has to get his head around extraordinary circumstances in the plays' final moments. Unfortunately they are just doing one more night at Richmond, but well worth catching on tour.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00jj4wt This series is being shown in its entirety tonight on BBC4, banned from re-broadcast on the grounds of its controversial but it appears well-informed views about aspects of the judiciary and policing. Writer Gordon Newman introduces the series tonight and I'm delighted to say that he's going to be on The Chim in a week or two.

Groundbreaking, controversial series that changed the face of police drama.

After work yesterday I got myself shorn for the first time as an OAP, ironically in a non-canine 'grooming' place . The assumption appears to be crew cut plus hipster beard , a Percy Thrower influence detectable, but all in all a relief to be less foggily hirsute in these temperatures. Then last night I talked to 60-something emerging bluesman /singer-songwriter Edward Schyfryn for the Chim and I hope we'll speak again about the politics of Ukraine and Israel. I don't think he has much time for the Zionists somehow.

Being mildly lurgified, I've been able to dive into 'Wayne Shorter- Zero Gravity' on Amazon Prime. The visual composition of the films has a nascent jazz about it. One moment, after a life of stoicism, finds Wayne editing and taping together the immaculately hand-written orchestral parts for 'Gaia' in his 80s, unperturbed, while some Trump wonk is bleating away on CNN. Musicianship as martial art.

Thanks to Farah Lily Farah for filling in on Sunday enabling me to catch some (bloody trains again ) of Anton Lesser as Laurie Lee at the Richmond Theatre accompanied by world-class string ensemble from the Orchestra Of The Swan. Last Night's Colin Crilly Takeover featured Anna Redfern of www.cinemaandco.co.uk on the extraordinary cultural politics of Covid-19 as they've impacted on her business decisions, on local culture and her life - CC considers the Bridgen debate on this territory ahead this week in the Commons, the latest from Gaza and protests about it, and the new version of the SNP's Hate Speech Act among other things. I'm back tonight from 9 with Guido Spannochi, Summertime Sax denizen of Battersea Park Cafe, on his rather different new live album plus Farah popping in about 1030.

On the N44 an extended plangent threnody by two Aussie deep Contraltos tired and emotional about an office menage a something or other. It occurs to me that this must be from the same undiscovered Harrison Birtwistle Opera that the Geese have been performing. Unfortunately they were indisposed for the obligato.

Due to non-availability of the other party I trook a detour and got on the Wareham and Swanage Railway, remembering that last steam trains a few miles north-west when I was 4 or 5 . The dedication and preservation of the team is first-rate , and their low budget will have been swelled by 291 opassengers at 12 quid a head on my journey alone. Lacking the oomph to go far, I went to see 'Bob Marley-One Love ' on the way back- a bit stylised at the end to make a genre-historical point. Performance of great nuance and the behaviour of musicians in rehearsal, and Bob's style on stage, is brilliantly caught. The Odeon in Bournemouth has an usual policy on people behind kicking the person in front, and prolonged unrelated yatter during the film ( one source was loudly sworn at ) , and I wound up sitting on the floor for my £17.60. But with a film that good it doesn't matter.

Arriving home to this sad news- gone far too soon. The BBC clipped the wings of his convivial anarchy (Mr Angry and Mr Spoons via Peter Dickson in the news booth were rumbled by the suits) but he was one of the rare grouping that transcended to be the complete entertainer, a lot smarter than he would be expected to be now. RIP and Thank You Steve :)

Veteran BBC radio presenter and broadcasting "legend" Steve Wright has died at the age of 69.
