Look for the helpers. I always come back to this, when times seem tough, or challenging, or I simply feel alone - and in this vein, I am so happy to have such a community full of them.

One of these amazing humans is Dr. Lynne Maureen Hurdle, who is about to start her next cohort of On The Matter Of Race.

You want to know about this group. Trust us.

Why?

In Dr Hurdle's words:

"Racism has not been resolved by any means and part of the reason is that systemic racism is designed to be invisible to White people until they have a reason to want to learn about it. If you aren't sure what I mean by systemic racism and even if you think you understand what I mean, the On The Matte Of Race program Is for you, is for you."

"This program is a container where White People who truly want to contribute to changing the racist systems in the United States of America are taught to dismantle the psychological structures in their mind to fully open their eyes to the disparity between Blacks and Whites in the world around them."

This is a story of these two pictures - and much more.

One picture is of my mother & her father-in-law (my grandfather) on her wedding day. (And if you'll recall, I’ve mentioned he never smiled in photos - but he did, on this day).

The other is of me and my father on my own wedding day.

Both of these weddings, and our subsequent marriages, may have never happened had it not been for a 1967 Supreme Court case called Loving v. Virginia, which ended all race-based legal restrictions on marriage in the United States.

It paved the way not only for our family to exist, but so many other families and generations as a result.

If the Court had decided otherwise, there may be a whole lot of people who aren't here today, including me, my brother, some of my nephews, my own kids, Sara - and that's just off the top of my head. That story is the same for so many of us.

Sometimes the Supreme Court gets things wrong - very wrong - and we should get loud as hell to make sure that we change that. But sometimes the Supreme Court gets things right, and we have to continue to fight like hell to make sure our kids don't have less rights than we do.

And to me, decisions that involve people being seeing as humans first and foremost, and decisions grounded in deep reasoning around equal protection under the law, are ones worth fighting for.

As we look around and see rights being rolled back, we have to realize that we have agency right now to be the changemakers in our own spheres of life.

So as we head into this Sunday, which is the 55th anniversary of this landmark decision, I hope you realize this goes beyond a story of two pictures - it's also the story of family, belonging, human rights, and the ability to just, simply, exist.

And if that's not worth fighting for, at least for our kids, then what is?

No, it shouldn’t just be for pregnancies as a result of r**e. But yes, this story is powerful and human and important for those against choice to read.

Because basically in zero cases is making the decision to terminate a pregnancy an easy one.

"Our medical assistant came to me, panicked, and handed me a positive test. ... 'Run it again,' I sputtered — to buy some time and gather my wits and hope by some miracle it would produce a different result."

Condolences in Response to the Death of Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Thekchen Chöling, Dharamsala, HP, India, December 26, 2021 - Immediately on being informed that his “respected elder spiritual brother and good friend” Archbishop Desmond Tutu had passed away, His Holiness the Dalai Lama composed a letter to the Archbishop’s daughter, Rev. Mpho Tutu.

“Please accept my heartfelt condolences,” he wrote, “and convey the same to your mother and other members of your family. I pray for him.

“As you know, over the years, your father and I enjoyed an enduring friendship. I remember the many occasions we spent time together, including the week here at Dharamsala in 2015 when we were able to share our thoughts on how to increase peace and joy in the world. The friendship and the spiritual bond between us was something we cherished.

“Archbishop Desmond Tutu was entirely dedicated to serving his brothers and sisters for the greater common good. He was a true humanitarian and a committed advocate of human rights. His work for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was an inspiration for others around the world.

“With his passing away, we have lost a great man, who lived a truly meaningful life. He was devoted to the service of others, especially those who are least fortunate. I am convinced the best tribute we can pay him and keep his spirit alive is to do as he did and constantly look to see how we too can be of help to others.”

White women are caught between patriarchal structures that are enforced by men and racial hierarchies, which they benefit from even when they don’t actively seek to reinforce the oppression of people of color. In this in-between space, white women sometimes find it difficult to address issues of r...

Yet as the wife of a Canadian, I have learned that the word isn't accurately in many of the casual conversations we have around here.

Hello and welcome to Fall! What we’re really excited about - besides our book coming out in mid October! - is our fall lineup of episodes. Now that we’re done with our Summer of Action, we’re focused on issues that have not only been in our consciousness, but ones that we’ve been hearing about throughout 2021 and ones that we’d like to highlight for the fall.   In September, we’ll be focusing on current events and topics that you may have heard about in the news - including representation in the media, Qanon, and so much more. October will be devoted to all things voting and our political systems as we look at the practical things we all need to be aware of when we vote this November, or in 2022 - or as we read or listen to the news. Finally, in November, we’ll be talking to people who are working on transformative change in their own spheres of influence, and see how they got involved in doing this impactful work.   And to kick this off - let’s talk about the Census. Because we’ve learned a lot about who we are and our own communities with the news that’s been coming out over these last few weeks. Have questions, comments, or concerns? Email us at [email protected] What to listen for: Our summer recap and what it’s like to have some kids back in school! The overview of our fall lineup Breaking down the latest census information - how the census impacts policies and elections not just for the next ten years, but for potentially the next hundred How lawmakers froze the number of members in the House of Representatives at a max - even though that cap is not mandated in the Constitution And yes, of course, how the demographics appear to be showing a marked decline in the White population of this country - and how that can be both reality and a question of more accurate data   Where to pre-order Dear White Women: Let’s Get (Un)comfortable Talking About Racism: https://thecollectivebook.studio/dear-white-women Like what you hear?  Don’t miss another episode and subscribe!
