Movie: Aligarh
This week's movie- 'Aligarh' has been reviewed by our correspondent Aksh*ta Rawat.
Aligarh, at best, can be described as a story of a man who wants to live a respectable and simple life and just read poetry, with no interest in "activism".
Based on the true story of the 64-year-old Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) professor- Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras and his unjust suspension, the movie traces the professor's story from the moment he was secretly filmed and subsequently suspended for having consensual sex with a man. While watching the movie, one should keep in mind that the happenings took place back when homosexuality was legalized, albeit only temporarily, by the Delhi High Court. So it is embarrassing to witness the demeaning treatment the professor received, even after the landmark judgment of the Delhi high court.
Manoj Bajpai proves to be perfect in the role of Dr. Siras, yet again showcasing his brilliant acting skills. He portrays the professor as a benevolent man who enjoys poetry and listening to old classic Hindi songs while a glass of whiskey keeps him company. Aligarh also focuses on his friendship with a journalist who was actually Deepu Sebastian Edmond of the Indian Express, played in the movie by Rajkumar Rao. Deepu Sebastian described his relationship with Dr. Siras in an article as,"I like to think that Siras and I bonded over our naivety. Each of us assumed that it was about ourselves: A reporter after a story, a middle-aged man outraged that someone would barge into his home with a video camera."
Aligarh is one movie, every Indian should watch. Often homosexuality has been used as a comic element in Bollywood movies, so it comes off as a relief to finally watch it being portrayed with humane dignity. Hansal Mehta, the director of other critically acclaimed movies like Shahid and CityLights, showcases the story of the professor as it is, without exaggerating any detail which does not fail to move you.
Although at times a few scen
