Nevada Storm vs Houston Energy

STORM CHASERS UPDATE

On Saturday July 10th, the 7-0 Nevada Storm took on the 6-1 Houston Energy in the American Conference Championship at North Valleys High School. This was truly a match-up of two of D2s best teams and it was clear why both deserved to be here. Both teams battled their hearts out and although the Storm took the 14-6 victory, punching their ticket to the championship in Canton, Houston was no slouch as they held the #1 rusher in the league to under 150 yards and a single touchdown. Both teams suffered a multitude of injuries, slowing down momentum throughout the game, which could be the reason for one of the lowest scoring games of the entire WFA season.

The first quarter was a defensive juggernaut as Houston’s stacked defensive line rotation corralled Nevada’s three-headed monster and the Storm’s interior d-line and linebackers put a stop to the Energy’s plethora of weapons. The second quarter was a different story as the Storm began to gain some momentum. Storm all-star running back #22 Jasmine Plummer was the first to score with a nice 3-yard trip to the end-zone. These points would go unanswered, even after the Energy removed quarterback #7 Christina Jaques and switched to more of a “ground and pound” bunch formation for almost the entire second quarter. The first half would wrap up with a 32-yard hurdling touchdown run from the Storms #18 Sarah Colangelo followed by a 2-point PAT by quarterback Mo Oetjen to end the half 14-0 Storm.

In the second half we saw the return of Houston quarterback #7 Christina Jaques as well as a change in game-plan for the seemingly struggling Energy offense. Houston became increasingly pass happy in the second half which would become their ultimate demise. A great deal of miscommunication between signal caller and receivers as well as an overabundance of penalties would end up costing the Energy the game. Although Houston did find the end-zone on a 13-yard Christina Jaques Quarterback sneak, it would not be enough to overcome the tenacity that got the Storm to where they are. An incredible Ashley Osborn interception (she went full on Amelia Earhart) and a Jessie Felker first down would put the game away.

Following the game, both teams joined at the 50-yard line in prayer as they celebrated what it meant for both teams to play on a stage of that magnitude. It was heartwarming to see true sportsmanship, especially after a game with stakes as high as this one.

The Storm will now narrow their focus on Canton as they prepare to take on the Detroit Dark Angels who blew out the Jacksonville Dixie Blues Saturday night 59-0. The Storm have a lot on their plate as they look be become the first team in Woman’s Football Alliance history to win two championships in two separate divisions. The D-II championship will be held at the NFL Hall of Fame stadium in Canton Ohio on July 23rd.

Look out Canton, there’s a Storm rolling in!

Nevada Storm vs Mile High Blaze
Game recap

STORM CHASERS UPDATE:

On Saturday the 6-0 Nevada Storm took on the 6-0 Mile High Blaze in the first round of the 2021 WFA D2 Pacific Regional Playoffs. The final score of the game was 34-20 Storm, however, the score is significantly more representative of the second half of the game as the first half was all defense. The score was tied 8-8 going into half time and after some adjustments, both offenses took off.

Storm running back Jasmine Plummer went down early in the game with what seemed to be a foot injury, as well as Storm Tackle Jj Sanchez. Both would return to the game and finish with big nights. Even battling injury, Plummer racked up 233 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns with her longest of the night going for 72 yards as she broke 1,000 yards on the season late in the third quarter. Jasmine now leads the league in both yards (1,047) and touchdowns (18). Storm running back Jesse Deirdre Felker finished the night with 125 yards on the ground and a touchdown. Running back Sarah Colangelo had a nice night as well as she finished with 51 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Blaze, who have played in every D2 conference championship game since 2016, faced a different story. Although their defense held strong until midway through the third quarter, the team was riddled with injuries and penalties. Mile High running back Lacey Abell finished the night with a pair of touchdowns and was seemingly all the Blaze could do to get any offense going.
With this win, the Storm move on to the American Conference Finals where they will take on the Houston Energy on July 10th in Reno and look to punch their ticket to the Women's Football Alliance D2 championship in Canton Ohio at the NFL Hall of Fame Stadium. This will not be a new opponent for the Storm as they faced the Houston back in 2018, losing the final championship game of the IWFL before it was dissolved.

The four-time national champions will be no easy task for Nevada as the Energy come into the playoffs at 6-1 and ranked 2nd in division II. The #1 ranked Storm still aim to become the first team in WFA history to win two titles in two divisions and prove to everyone why they’re D2’s top ranked team.
