Buffy Wicks:
Buffy Wicks is a political strategist and expert in building and running local and national political and advocacy grassroots campaigns. She is currently a Fellow at the Institute of Politics and Public Policy at Georgetown University. As one of the early hires on the 2008 campaign for President Obama, she spearheaded new and innovative strategies for grassroots mobilization and was responsible for a new model of outcome-based organizing famously utilized during the Obama campaign. Wicks was then tapped by President Obama to serve as the Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. In this role, she was the president’s liaison for key stakeholders throughout the country and charged with mobilizing their support to pass critical legislative priorities such as health care reform and financial regulation. In 2012, as part of the Executive Management Team for President Obama’s reelection effort, she served as the National Director of Operation Vote. She spearheaded the campaign’s cutting edge strategy to communicate with and mobilize core demographic voters, including African Americans, Latinos, young people, and women, producing record turnout among targeted voter segments. Recently, Buffy transitioned Obama’s SuperPAC Priorities USA into a pro-Hilary Clinton vehicle and was it’s first Executive Director. She previously worked as a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress focusing on public policies affecting women and families. Buffy is originally from California and graduated with a double major in political science and history from the University of Washington. Her additional recent accomplishments include completing an Iron (Wo)man in Mexico and getting married to her husband Peter. Sally Smith:
Sally Smith is the Founder and Executive Director of The Nexus Fund, a global organization dedicated to ending mass atrocities by supporting grassroots efforts in at-risk countries and communities. Before starting The Nexus Fund, Sally worked for more than a decade on numerous campaigns, foundations and nonprofit organizations, including Obama for America, Humanity United, the Enough Project to End Genocide and Mass Atrocities (a project of the Center for American Progress), the Partnership for Public Service, Nick Lampson for U.S. Congress, Walmart Watch, EMILY’s List, Tony Knowles for U.S. Senate and more. She has written pieces for the Washington Post and is an alumnus of EMILY’s List Campaign Corps. Most recently she ran the Sudan Now campaign in advance of the referendum on independence for South Sudan, the world’s newest country. Sally is a passionate and unabashed feminist, who cares deeply about equality for all, regardless of race, gender, or geography. The great loves of her life are surfing, her mom, her dog Franklin, her girlfriends and her husband, Brandon. Sally graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rollins College and is currently pursuing a mid-career Masters in International Public Policy at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, with a focus on Conflict Management.
