Atle Nymo Trio - Circle Steps (CD/Digital)

Atle Nymo Trio’s second album «Circle Steps» promises to captivate listeners with its unique blend of jazz and improvisational music.

Circle Steps tells a story about seeing something from several sides, movement - up and down, moving but remaining in the same place. It is also describing the structure of the song, the title track itself. The material most often revolves around simple melodic motifs that give room for development through joint musicianship.

The band originates from Nymo's desire to play in a melodic, open context in the trio format. The mix with Mats Eilertsen and Michaela Antalová gives the trio a large palette of sounds, and together with Nymo form a distinctive and highly communicative band with a strong focus on timbre and sound image.

VoicEquilibrium - Wind Bells

The second single from Pernille Mejer’s VoicEquilibrium: Wind bells is a vocal reflection on the dessert, the sand, the wind moving a piece of dried-up scrub, the arid soil in waste land and its depth of loneliness, bringing attention the worrying change in whether and more present occurrence of drought.

Behind VoicEquilibrium is singer & improvisor, Pernille Mejer Richardt about whom it is predicted that she will further develop jazz and improvised music in the future. The Scandinavian jazz press has even described her as a courageous and original artist with the skills to do things differently, and with a voice able to practice wise, yet calm voice-acrobatics.

Geoffrey Dean - Low Tide

Low Tide is the second single from the “Foundations” album featuring pianist Geoffrey Dean, Harish Raghavan on bass, Dr. Eric Binder on drums, and Justin Copeland on trumpet. This driving hard bop tune features solos by Dean on piano, Binder on Drums and Raghavan on bass.

This hard swinging composition by the late great but underappreciated pianist Elmo Hope sets up a vehicle for the musicians to improvise and expand upon, each bringing their own creativity to this unique arrangement by the band. Justin Copeland helps to round out the melody in and out with his warm and inviting trumpet tone. Enjoy “Low Tide”.

NEW ALBUM OUT!

CLASH (CD/Digital)

CLASH is a danish quintet founded by saxophonist Michael Bladt, who has teamed up with four musicians who are all 20 years younger than the bandmaster. The band is based in Aarhus, Denmark.

The band creates a unique sound where tight beats and quirky grooves are mixed with more open, atmospheric passages and where synthesizer and effects guitar merge with saxophone and flute. Michael Bladt celebrated his 25th anniversary with the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra last year, and it was celebrated with a concert with AJO, where the orchestra played new music composed by Michael Bladt.

This project will be recorded in December 2023, with the English producer and pianist Bill Laurance, who is a member of the American fusion collective Snarky Puppy.

Cosmic Wildlife - How To (LP/Digital)

Cosmic Wildlife is a Swedish retro-futuristic jazz band exploring the space between acoustic and electronic, melody and noise, composition and improvisation. Formed in 2020 by composer and bassist Elias Hällqvist, the Gothenburg-based quartet has its roots in the contemporary jazz scene, but ventures into electronica, dream pop, and ambient territory. Alongside Elias, each member brings something unique to the mix: the ephemeral melodies of Pontus Hedström (wind instruments), the warm fuzzy harmonies of Karl Magnús Anderssons (synthesizers) and the swinging beats of Anton Jonsson (drums.)

For their debut album “How to”, Cosmic Wildlife has assembled an eclectic mix of tracks, all inspired by the subtle beauty of the mundane. Daydreaming while commuting on a dark winter morning, staring at the moon on a sleepless night, reliving old memories while packing a moving box. These are the kind of everyday moments that have influenced the creation of “How to”.

Saxophonist and composer Sam Knight, presents his debut album, "Knight Life," a fusion of instrumental jazz, and captivating vocals. Knight’s musical journey takes us on a vivid exploration of his life experiences, with each track serving as a chapter, a significant moment, or encounter in his life.

On the album, listeners can experience a wide range of influences. Sam's deep appreciation for renowned saxophonists like Michael Brecker, Chris Potter, Seamus Blake, and Ben Wendel, along with jazz orchestrators and composers such as Pat Metheny, Lyle Maze, Gil Goldstein, and Claus Ogerman, is
evident. Moreover, his recent exploration of Afro-Cuban, Samba, and Flamenco genres has infused vibrant flavors into his music. The album's recording process was unique, involving two distinct stages. The first stage included the traditional approach of recording with a band in the studio, while the second stage
featured Sam recording over 300 vocal tracks in his bedroom, arranging the music intuitively by ear and exploring imaginative uses of the human voice.

Ida Alanen Trio - Awake Asleep (CD/Digital)

Ida Alanen’s compositions draw inspiration from the borderland between sleep and wakefulness, inviting images from the subconscious into broad daylight. The trio alternates effortlessly between carefully orchestrated compositions and the freedom of improvisation. As a pianist Ida has an exceptional sensitivity to melody and simplistic beauty, and her compositions are filled with colourful details and a rich harmonic palette. The duality of the two worlds, the dreamworld and realistic world, the conscious and the subconscious remains the main theme of the trio’s debut
album Awake Asleep.

”I’ve always had a vivid and colourful dream world. I often remember the scenes, places and different details as if it actually happened.” Ida explains. ”The dreams are often long with multiple sections, they can be realistic or pure fireworks of imagination without any restrictions of the waking world.” A couple of years ago her fascination with dreaming started to grow, as she realized that having a strong connection to ones dreamworld is not to be taken for granted. She became especially interested in lucid dreaming and hypnagogia - the state between sleep and wakefulness. All of the tunes on the album are either directly inspired by dreams, were affected by
them, or serve as mirrors to a dreamlike imaginary world.

John Børge Askeland - The Realization (CD/Digital)

John Børge Askeland grew up by Sognefjorden and his education background includes, amongst other things, the jazz program at NTNU and composition studies at the Oslo University College.
Throughout his life he has always composed and is convinced that his childhood, where he was surrounded by majestic nature, has influenced his music. Tall mountains, peace and quiet, mighty deep fjords, and the heavy thick fog which often lies over the fjord far down the mountainsides are all reflected in his compositions.

Throughout the years he has contributed on productions as a bassist, arranger, and composer, but this marks his debut in publishing music under his own name.

“When I compose I come closer to my own self, also to the realization that all our good intentions do not always lead to something good. That which can cause us to harm ourselves, each other, and nature,” he says. The music is characterised by honesty, truth, and a plead for reconciliation between us humans and the creation we are so dependent on.

Some of the music was first created as liturgical components that here have been reworked to fit the ensemble. He has chosen to preserve the original titles such as, Kyrie, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, which precisely challenge reckoning and realization.
“In realization lies a fine balance between discovery and humility”, he believes, a combination that gives room for creativity. When he invites other musicians to his compositions, he finds it important to meet each other with respect so that they together can discover and create in the magical moment of collaboration. In many ways they are searching for the realization together. Playing together gives insight, it mirrors, it challenges and affirms.

Arve Henriksen and Helge Andreas Norbakken are acquaintances from their student days where they collaborated frequently. He tells that the way they play with vulnerability and great presence has never left him, rather it has colored his expression as a composer. Eyolf Dale is a newer connection. His sparkling, yet delicate piano playing greatly affects this release. He never dips into melancholy despite its prevalence in the compositions, which creates a beautiful tension in the music. He has had precisely these musicians in mind while composing. He is ever grateful for the musicians’ contribution and the exceptional way in which they have approached the material.

Mario Mariotti Quartet - Live at AngelicA (CD/Digital)

The quartet assembled by trumpeter and composer Mario Mariotti indebted to the teaching of the European avant-garde of the Mid-Twentieth Century and the experience of the groups gathered at the Cellar Café in New York in 1964, wants to give a personal and current interpretation of the concept of ‘instant composing’. Inspired by some groups led by the musician, painter and teacher Bill Dixon, the trumpet/flugelhorn is flanked by two double basses and drums in a dialogue in which each of the sound elements is, at the same time, soloist and sideman. An interchange based on silences and breaths, reciprocal references and bare melodic motives, fragmented rhythms and contrasting dynamic games, in which listening is a fundamental part of the choice of ‘sound gestures’ put into play by the four musicians.

This album is a live set roughly 68-minute-long made up of a seamless suite divided into 11 parts (Stanze) recorded by Gianluca Turrini at AngelicA | Centro di Ricerca Musicale, Teatro San Leonardo, Bologna, March 23th, 2023, during the “Season 2021>2022 – nono anno"

Sam Knight - Lights Out, Logging Off

While each track carries emotional meaning, this track holds the darkest story. According to Sam “...it was one of the most mind-bending and disturbing moments of Covid or indeed my life. From the moment logged into the live-stream and witnessed the rest of my family gathered in the crematorium, only able to view the backs of their masked heads, I understood why remote-funerals might never catch on. There was no-one to hold, no-one to comfort or be comforted by and no-one to share tears with. My final moments with my last grandparent unfolded on my laptop—a device I use for sending emails, recording saxophone, and teaching.

When the funeral had finished and my family had left the crematorium, I remained behind, alone, with the power to conclude my Grandfather’s story, at the tip of my finger.” The creative process behind this single was truly one-of-a-kind. With thoughts of his grandfather's funeral, Sam composed, arranged, and recorded the piece all at once, drawing inspiration solely from his ears and his passion for baroque and classical music. Utilising Logic X, he added layers to shape the song, continuously refining it without any formal notation. This natural and theory-free approach resulted in a heartfelt and authentic musical creation that seems to emanate directly from the soul.

Sam's remarkable 3.5 octave vocal range is on full display as the song spans from deep bass tones to soaring falsetto melody lines. He also blended soprano and tenor saxophones to enhance the sonic textures. After crafting the initial demo, Sam brought it to the studio where the band contributed additional pre-arranged layers, deepening the composition's complexity. During the final editing phase, he re-recorded the vocals to achieve broadcast quality and fine-tuned the band's arrangement to achieve his envisioned rendition of the song.

Yö Kaivopuistossa (in English: A Night in Kaivopuisto) is a surrealistic portrait of a person standing in the darkness of the night in Kaivopuisto, a majestic seaside park in the heart of Helsinki. It is a stormy night, and the person is standing still like a sleepwalker, surrounded by the raging sea and black sky. It is a dreamlike scene, straight out of a Kafka novel, where anything could happen unconcerned with the restrictions of the real world.Although pianist-composer Alanen’s music is fully instrumental, her approach to composing is often like writing songs without words. Hearts Mend is a love song and a poetic tribute to what is lost. The soft and static comping pattern is rocking the listener with a gentle movement, as it tells about the healing process after giving up a loving relationship. In the middle of the feelings of pain and loss, it carries a hopeful and soothing message that hearts will mend.

Galumphing Duo - Contrast of Opposites (CD/Digital)

“Galumphing duo” consists of South African born Shannon Mowday (baritone sax, alto sax, bass sax, tubax & contra alto clarinet) and Norwegian, Jørgen Bjelkerud (trombone).

Despite coming from completely different backgrounds and generations, these two extraordinary musicians have found common ground in composition and improvisation and present musical stories and dialogues in an innovative and creative way. The concept of Galumphing, created by Stephen Nachmanovitch and presented in his book Free Play, can be described as ‘inexhaustible play energy’ as seen in toddlers and small animals.This serves as the core concept of their interaction which allows for spontaneous and playful interplay in improvisation, composition and arrangement: both heeding to form and structure yet also allowing the freedom to go where the moment directs them. Inspired by the one stroke flow of Japanese Enso circles, they aimed to create an album absolutely stripped of overproduction, allowing the vulnerability and honesty of their innate musicality and interplay to be exposed.

The ensemble has developed a concept of dual improvisation which seeks to blur the boundaries of stylistic genres whilst assimilating aspects of jazz history with musical cells borrowed from (for example) Bach and contrapuntal music or the strong influence of Mowday's South African roots and their shared Nordic influences. In their compositions and arrangements, sometimes through-composed and other times just sketches, they seek to find the extremes of their instruments in register, sound and technical proficiency and combine the elements of perfect intimacy with the raw or unpolished aspects of being in the moment. They juxtapose dense sonic environments with light and minimalistic space using their instruments (some of them very unique) in non conventional ways. All of these qualities display a ‘Contrast of Opposites’ which serves as the title of their debut album.

Trumpeter, composer and bandleader Henry Spencer releases his new album, The Defector, following his band’s growing international touring schedule, radio and TV broadcasts, the increase of audiences and followers internationally, and his previous releases made with multi-GRAMMY Award-winning Dave Darlington in New York (whose credits include Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter), receiving critical acclaim internationally.

Spencer’s music touches jazz, rock, minimalism, and at times is cinematic, combining intense, raw energy and evocative outlets, with moments of intimate, heart-felt, emotionally-led, lyrical melodies - almost as if there were words being sung. Henry Spencer wrote this album inspired by defectors; whether it’s the soldier deserter from an army committing war crimes or the partner that leaves their abusive relationship for a freer life, the politician who actively challenges and leaves their party to protect democracy, or the North Korean dissident that chooses the life-threatening endangerment of attempting to escape, crossing the border into a completely unknown world, rather than stay living with dictatorship, tyranny and oppression.

Alessandro Sgobbio - Piano Music 2 (LP/CD/Digital)

Piano Music 2 is Alessandro Sgobbio’s follow-up to his acclaimed “Piano Music” (AMP Music & Records, 2022). The Italian pianist and composer presents nine new intimate compositions, each of them dedicated to a person, place or topic that have a special meaning and importance to him.

The album is a meditative sound experience that invites the listeners to actively reconnect with the powerful meanings of natural and spiritual elements (“Modular Circles”, “The River”, “Tula”, ”Einhausung”), finding inspirations from special historical episodes of cities as Paris (“Îlot Chalon” is dedicated to one of the first cosmopolitan picturesque Parisian districts that unfortunately has faced intentional degradation until its demolition) and Venezia (“Fondamenta de la Tana”), two of Sgobbio’s most beloved places on earth. There are also some very special tributes: the opening track “Keys and Returns” is dedicated to journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, while the two versions of ”Asker” (which takes its name from the homonym Norwegian town) are dedicated to Sgobbio’s mentor, composer pianist Misha Alperin.

“The dedication theme is the very special and beloved topic on this album (as well as the recent “Piano Music”) but “Piano Music 2” is also a diapositive of my “extended timbers” generated by the combination of my real time piano playing and the sound modulations coming from my electronic instruments. I enjoy finding myself diving into these limitless soundscapes that can evolve in time, space, timbres – and still remain well rooted and related to the original intuition. I feel constantly invited to search for more creative ways to interact with my instrument(s) and also extend the possibilities of my piano playing. It is an exciting, refreshing process, and I am delighted that I could finally reunite all these musical thoughts and experiences into this record.”
