My pal, wee John McCauley is a legend. I don’t use that “L” word lightly because it’s bandied about too liberally and as a result is devalued - but in this case that’s EXACTLY what he is.

He’s been in radio for over 40 years and next Friday, he’s retiring from daily presenting on breakfast at Smooth Radio, Scotland.

To give you an idea, I’ve been doing the same for 30 something years - I guess I’m an old hand now too, but I personally know 3 people in all that time who’ve retired from the industry on their own terms. You’re only ever as good as your last set of audience figures, so they tell me. Certainly doesn’t help your sleep pattern over the years! The fact John’s navigated his way through that career and is now leaving when he wants is remarkable. A testament to his talents.

Let me put it this way, if you’ve never heard him, it’s your loss - he’s Scotland’s Wogan.

And now, I’m in the hugely privileged, squeaky bummed scenario of being the guy who takes over from him.

It’s exciting and daunting and everything it should be, but as I’m at the age where broadly speaking I’m up most mornings at that time for a p*e now anyway, I figured - may as well give it a go.

I’m not John. Well, I am, but not that one. I can’t be him, so I won’t even try, because I’d only be a poor copy.

But I am a pretty good version of me most days, and I’m hoping you’ll like that.

Give me a go, and if not you can hand me back after 14 days.

Monday, November 7th, 6-10am, Smooth Radio, Scotland. If not then, hopefully they’ll let me back the day after too.

Me receiving yet another knock back from the days we physically walked up and asked somebody out on a date. When you learned adrenalin has a colour.

Also the questions I'm asked most when I suggest a client should start a business podcast. I have more success making a convincing argument there.

And for that reason Tip Sheet 6 is about podcasting and not my previous single life. Thank God.
