Last week, the Senate held judiciary committee hearings with the biggest players in tech and social media aka Meta, Snap, X, Discord, and TikTok, to discuss growing concerns of children’s safety on social platforms. The Kids Online Safety Act, or KOSA, is a bipartisan bill presented by Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) that was introduced in 2023 after we saw a rise in states introducing their own child safety protections.

These hearings were emotional. Families of alleged victims were very vocal and shared stories of sexual blackmailing minors, overdoses from purchasing drugs off of social platforms, and being incessantly fed pro-ED content to the point of fatality. TikTok was questioned for its parent company, Bytedance, and its ties to the CCP. Meta was slammed for an internal memo that estimated the lifetime value of a teen user as $270. While they did not say “kids lives are only worth $270” the placement of a value on their time on the platform sparked some outrage.

Meanwhile, opposition to this bill say it's a threat to free speech, would result in the collection of more sensitive data from kids and adults alike, and become a way for these companies and the government to get more data and have more control over speech. Several LGBT+ orgs have also gone against this bill after Senator Blackburn, who is backing the bill, suggested the bill could be a way to protect minors from transgender influence.

Here are our key takeaways as a social agency:
-Assume children are viewing your content. Though parents are restricting their kids' access, teens rule the internet and slip away from their watchful eyes. If your content is adult, keep track of who follows you. Kids and teens might want find interest in your content, but if it’s not appropriate you can and should block them or remove them as followers. Your adult followers care about your brand’s values.

-Privacy, safety, and free speech are hot topics and they’re not going away. If you’re a social-first brand, start asking yourself where you stand on these issues.
