Scholars of Haitian and Caribbean history, the media should be calling you right now. There should be op-ed’s, articles and news packages that remind/teach the public about our intertwined histories and how it shapes the present. When Haiti’s leaders overthrew their slave masters during the revolution, the U.S. refused to recognize their independence. The estimated 21 billion dollar “debt” the French forced Haiti to pay, would also contribute to the country’s destabilization. This passage from a 2004 article by Edwidge Danticat in @time sums it up perfectly: “Haiti’s very existence highlighted the deepest contradictions of the American revolutionary experiment. Though the U.S. Declaration of Independence stated that all men were created equal, Haitian slaves and free men and women of color battled what was then one of the world’s most powerful armies to prove it. Yet how could the man who wrote about freedom in such transcendent terms have not seen echoes of his struggle in the Haitians’ urgent desire for self-rule? Possibly because as a slave owner and the leader of slaveholders, he could never reconcile dealing with one group of Africans as leaders and another as chattel. So Haiti’s independence remained unrecognized by Jefferson, who urged Congress to suspend commerce with the nascent republic, declaring its leaders “cannibals.”” The past really is always present! #history #haiti #america #hispaniola #americannegra #springfield
I’m raising and loving children in my family who are Haitian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and African American. I have taught children of immigrants families from around the world including the Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, and countries in Latin America. Enough is enough. The political rhetoric about immigration has been so toxic, hateful and destructive for this country over the past 8+ years, that it seems there is no bottom anymore. We can debate about fixing a broken immigration system, without denigrating human beings or resorting to fear-mongering. But it takes courage, honesty and accountability— not deflection, manipulating facts and “both sides”—ism. I don’t care what we’ve been— I just know we need to be so much better for the generations coming behind us.
