I’ve removed my personal profiles from Facebook and Instagram and this page will follow shortly. I’ve found all of social media increasingly toxic in recent times, and I don’t think these platforms serve any useful purpose any more. If you know me you have my number and can contact me. All the best and thanks for the good bits that have gone before.

If you ARE watching it, why? Turn it off and yell “…play Wycombe Sound” at your smart speaker, find us on UK Radioplayer or go old school on 106.6FM if you’re around High Wycombe

The tributes are coming thick and fast this morning, I know. Such a sad day, but also another reason to dig out and enjoy some of that incredible body of work.

Imagine growing up knowing that something isn’t quite right, then as you reach early teens something is screaming inside you telling you it’s not right - you’re just not comfortable in your own skin, not the person that you appear to be on the outside. One day it becomes clear that actually you’re stuck with a body that doesn’t represent how you feel or how you see yourself and you know you need to do something about it or life just won’t be worth living.

Imagine.

You change your body over some years to better reflect how you feel, to represent yourself as the person you know you are, and then you encounter hatred, rejection and ridicule from people who simply won’t take the time to understand, accept and show kindness.

Imagine it if you can. Most of us can just about begin to if we try.

The question of transgender people in sport is complex, and I’d be the first to agree that yesterday’s abandoned boxing match was an inappropriate pairing. But for God’s sake let’s be kind.

I’ve read some hideous stuff on the subject this morning, shared by people I previously respected. I won’t tolerate it from any of my social media contacts. So if you cannot accept people for what they are, give them the opportunity to show their greatness and treat them with respect, please “unfriend” me now because I don’t want to see any more.

Thanks.

Of all the songs I’ve heard over the years, few have had as big an effect as Marlena Shaw’s version of “California Soul” with its soaring chorus just dripping with sunshine and good vibes. Her take on “Wade In The Water” takes a lot of beating (although I haven’t yet heard a version I didn’t like) and “Liberation Conversation” is just iconic.

Very sad to hear of her passing peacefully yesterday, aged 81, but what a life to have led.

Marlena Shaw, the US soul and jazz vocalist best known for her hit ‘California Soul’, has died at the age of 81.
