Rory McIlroy held off Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard to win the season-ending DP World Tour Championship and clinch his sixth Race to Dubai title.

The Northern Irishman finished two strokes ahead of Hojgaard on 15 under at Jumeirah Golf Estates after a three-under-par 69 in his final round.

McIlroy, 35, was confirmed as the Race to Dubai winner midway through his round when nearest challenger Thriston Lawrence - who had needed to win the tournament to have any chance of clinching the overall title - finished at one under.

It is the third year in succession that McIlroy has topped the tour's season rankings and his sixth title overall - matching Seve Ballesteros' record.

"Everyone knows what Seve means to European golf and Ryder Cup players," an emotional McIlroy told Sky Sports.

"The European Ryder Cup locker room, all we have are quotes from Seve. We had a changing room with Seve's shirt from '95, the last Ryder Cup he played.

"He means so much to European golf and for me to be mentioned in the same breath, I'm very proud."

Sharing a three-way lead at the start of the final round, McIlroy put two shots between himself and Hojgaard with four birdies in his first five holes.

But bogeys on the ninth and 13th allowed the Dane to draw level with four holes remaining.

Just as Hojgaard was piling on the pressure, McIlroy produced a stunning approach shot on the 16th to tee up a birdie putt.

It was precisely the type of risky, aggressive play that has worked against McIlroy in the past but it moved him one stroke clear on this occasion with two holes left.

Hojgaard was forced to be aggressive in reply, but the Dane narrowly missed a birdie putt on the 18th - relieving the pressure on McIlroy who holed his own birdie attempt to seal the win.

Abu Dhabi has just been taken by storm, with the city’s biggest concert in eight years and it’s pretty darn cool.

On November 14, more than 30,000 fans (yes, that many) packed into Etihad Park on Yas Island, bringing the UAE to a standstill for a night of pure musical magic.

And it was all thanks to the superstar, Diljit Dosanjh. Part of his colossal Dil-Luminati Tour, this nearly three-hour spectacle lit up the stage and Yas Island in the process.
Dosanjh, known for his electric stage presence, took fans on a wild ride of hits and high energy, with a setlist that kept the crowd grooving non-stop. And they came from everywhere – over 80 percent of his fans travelled from outside Abu Dhabi just for this show, making it a record-breaking evening.

It wasn’t just the music that created waves, though. While in the capital, Dosanjh played tourist, hitting iconic spots like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. And, as you can well imagine, his Instagram reel from the visit was on fire, racking up nearly 40 million views. Nice.

Anyone who deemed Tesla’s Cybertruck an impressive but perhaps less-than-pretty automotive offering may change their minds at the sight of a one-off version that has gone on display in Dubai.

In keeping with its name, the city’s Gold Souk Extension has shipped in a 24k-gold-plated version of the electric monster for visitors at the venue to feast their eyes upon. Someone will get more than a chance to just peer through their sunglasses at the beyond-chintzy vehicle, though.

The Cybertruck in question is the prize in a raffle open to souk shoppers who spend enough on goods to qualify for inclusion. To be precise, every Dh500 spent at the venue will entitle the buyer to a ticket.

Gold-plated Cybertrucks are evidently a rarity. However, similar vehicles have been created in the past using a process called electroplating. This is technically challenging, but doing it to a Cybertruck is particularly problematic due to its stainless-steel chassis.

It is notoriously difficult to get anything to bond with this metal, so getting the gold coating to stick would involve etching the surface with acid. After further chemical treatments, and a thorough cleaning with concentrated soap, the gold would then be sprayed on to the bodyshell – twice – having first been mixed with a small percentage of cobalt to accentuate the adhesive process.

The Cybertruck first made its appearance on the world stage in 2023, with the UAE receiving its first deliveries just before the end of the year. The dual-motor electric vehicle has a bulletproof exoskeleton, shatterproof windscreen and a range of 400km after an eight-hour charge. It can also race to 100 kph in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of about 180 kph.

This is a car for attention seekers, whether in stainless steel or gold-plated. Speaking of which, the model at the souk will be on display until December 29 when a competition winner will be picked.

Etihad Airways today announced its financial results for the nine months ended 30 September 2024, achieving AED 1.4 billion (£301 million) profit after tax, a significant increase from AED 814 million (£175 million) during the same period in 2023. The strong results reflect the airline’s ongoing strategy of driving growth across the business alongside optimising operational efficiencies and improving customer service.

Total revenue increased 21 per cent to AED 18.4 billion (£3.96 billion) in the first nine months of 2024, up from AED 15.1 billion (£3.25 billion) in the same period last year. Passenger revenue increased by 21 per cent, reaching AED 15.2 billion (£3.27 billion), driven by strategic network expansion and increased flight frequencies that further enhanced connectivity. Etihad carried almost 14 million passengers over the first nine months of the year, a 35 per cent increase year-on-year, with Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) reaching 68.2 billion, up 31 per cent year-on-year. The average passenger load factor stood at 87 per cent for the nine months ended 30 September 2024, up from 86 per cent in the same period last year.

Cargo revenue rose to AED 3.0 billion (£646 million), up 21 per cent compared to the same period last year, driven by increased capacity, higher volumes and improved yields.

Cost per Available Seat Kilometre (CASK) ex-fuel reduced by 8 per cent compared to the same period last year, highlighting Etihad’s ongoing commitment to efficiency and quality.

The overall passenger experience continued to improve, with customer satisfaction showing a sustained positive trend. Highlights included the introduction of Etihad’s fifth A380 and enhanced services supported by the new Terminal A at Zayed International Airport, along with expanded flight options in more convenient time slots, underscoring Etihad’s commitment to delivering a seamless and elevated travel experience for all guests.

Following the announcement of the airline’s Joint Business Agreement with China Eastern in the second quarter, Etihad Cargo extended its partnership with SF Airlines to boost UAE-China trade by enhancing capacity, transit times, and destination access.

Antonoaldo Neves, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Aviation Group, said: “We are happy to report a strong performance for the first nine months of the 2024 financial year, with a 21 per cent increase in revenue and a 66 per cent increase in profit after tax compared to the same period in 2023. This impressive growth is driven by strong results in both passenger and cargo revenues, underscoring the effectiveness of our strategy and the strength of our growth trajectory, where we are also seeing ongoing improvements in customer satisfaction.

“Our operating fleet continues to expand, with all six A321NEOs scheduled for delivery in 2024 now in service. Despite the continued global aircraft shortage, our fleet has grown to 95 aircraft, an increase of 16 aircraft compared to the same time last year.

“Our rolling 12-month passenger count has reached nearly 18 million, marking an increase of nearly 80 per cent compared to 2022 and underscoring the pace of our growth over the past two years. We’ve also extended our network to 83 destinations as of September, up from 72 a year ago, with further growth expected by year-end.

“We are also proud to report that, alongside our growth, we continue to invest in and develop our people. This year, we successfully relaunched our cadet program and promoted more than 1,000 pilots and crew members, empowering them with the skills and experience needed to continue delivering excellence in service to our customers.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to our customers for their continued trust and support. We are committed to enhancing their travel experience to be the airline that everyone wants to fly.

“I also want to express my sincere gratitude to our team. Their hard work and dedication at every point of our customer journey and coming together for a purpose has been crucial in achieving these results. Together, we’ve made a significant impact, and I thank them for their commitment.”

A Real Madrid theme park officially opened in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, with the LaLiga giants calling the destination "the world's first football club theme park."
Real Madrid World's six-hectare (14.8 acre) site in Dubai features over 40 rides based on the club and its history, which the club said includes the world's tallest "flying chairs" ride and the Middle East's first wooden roller coaster.
The park's inauguration was attended by Madrid and Brazil legend Roberto Carlos and the club's director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueño, who also attended a coaching session for over 100 children from Madrid's charitable partner, the Real Madrid Foundation.
"Vsitors to this theme park will immediately feel the excitement and enthusiasm that our badge and our shirt convey," Butragueño said. "Here we bring to life a very important and beloved part of our history."
As well as the park's rides, Madrid fans can also gather to watch Real Madrid's games live at the venue.
Although the site, which is part of the Dubai Parks and Resorts complex, where a number of theme and water parks are located, officially opened with its inauguration on Wednesday, it first opened its doors to the public in a soft launch in April this year.
Attractions include the "Hala Madrid Coaster" and "Stars Flyer" described as "the world's tallest spinning ride" at 140 meters (460 feet) high.
There's a life-size replica of Cibeles, the fountain in Madrid where the team celebrates trophy wins, while visitors can also sample Spanish cuisine at the "Hala Madrid" restaurant.

Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), has reported the first phase of its Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) expansion at Expo City Dubai, is underway with enabling works contracts now completed.

The AED10bn (US2.72bn) expansion masterplan, approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, in September this year, is set to transform Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC) into the region’s largest indoor events venue upon completion. The expanded DEC will serve as the new home for mega exhibitions, allowing Dubai to double the number of large-scale events hosted annually from to over 600 by 2033.

The DEC masterplan supports the establishment of Dubai's new urban centre, encompassing Expo City Dubai – the UAE’s first 15-minute city – the overall Dubai South community, and Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), in line with the goals of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.

Phase 1 of the construction project begins with foundation work involving 515 piles to support the structure, 14,000 tonnes of structural steel – equivalent to the weight of two Eiffel Towers and 48,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete. The expanded exhibition centre will be covered with 78,000sqm of roof sheeting, an area comparable to 62 Olympic-size swimming pools. The development will also include a dedicated car parking facility and expanded marshalling yards to enhance event turn-around times. A team of international consultants, including Mace and Egis, have been appointed to manage the first phase of the DEC expansion.

13/11/2024

Yas Links, host venue for last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, has once again impressed the world’s best golfers, who have unanimously praised the flawless course conditions at the UAE venue.

As part of the season-ending DP World Tour Play-Offs, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship welcomed the top 70 available players from the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex at the conclusion of the ‘Back 9.’ The top 50 players will now advance to the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, which begins on Thursday.

Four-time Major champion and Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy, who finished tied third in the event, was full of praise for the course’s condition and strategic layout, commenting: “The condition of the golf course is absolutely incredible. It doesn’t feel like there’s a blade of grass out of place. The fairways are so tight, even for me. I’m worried about duffing a wedge shot. But fairways are incredible, tees, greens. The condition of the golf course is amazing.”

Former Open champion Shane Lowry echoed those sentiments, saying, “It’s a great venue. The weather is obviously pretty hot here this week, different in January, but the course is in as good a condition as I’ve seen a golf course.”

Thorbjorn Olesen, who finished tied third, highlighted the quality of the greens, noting: “The putter was definitely on fire the whole day, and you know, with the conditions of the greens, if you putted really well, you can make a lot of putts.”

Robert MacIntyre emphasised the perfection of the setup, adding: “The conditions of the course are perfect, and it’s literally trying to give yourself 18 chances at birdie, and if you do that, you’ll get a couple really close. I don’t think it could be better condition-wise.”

Yas Links has recently retained its #1 position in the Golf World Top 100 MENA Ranking. This prestigious achievement underscores the dedication of the teams involved and reflects Viya Golf’s continuous investment in maintaining and elevating its world-class facilities.

Viya Golf – a subsiduary of Dubai Golf – operates Yas Links, Yas Acres Golf & Country Club, and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi. Dubai Golf also operates Emirates Golf Club, Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club in Dubai, in addition to Topgolf Dubai.

Abu Dhabi is set to open a series of new attractions in 2025 as it works towards ambitious tourism goals.

Outlined in Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030, the city is aiming to increase annual global visitor numbers to 39.3m, up from 24m in 2023.

Speaking at World Travel Market (WTM), Abdulla Yusuf, director of international operations at the Department of Culture and Tourism for Abu Dhabi, told Travel Weekly: “One of the key pillars of the strategy is about city offering and activation. We want to create a very busy events calendar so no matter what time of the year travellers come to Abu Dhabi, there’s something they can experience.”

He added: “We don’t want to only concentrate tourism in one specific area but create vibrancy across the destination.”

As part of its expanded offering, Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Cultural District is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

New additions will include the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, which will host permanent art collections, exclusive exhibitions and a children’s education facility; the Zayed National Museum, showcasing the history and culture of the Emirates; and the National History Museum Abu Dhabi, where visitors can learn about the region’s geological history.

TeamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi is “opening soon” in the Saadiyat Cultural District featuring immersive art installations centred on the theme of Environmental Phenomena.

This October, Abu Dhabi also announced that it will bring the world’s second Sphere to the city, after the first opened in Las Vegas in September 2023, to host events, shows and concerts.

Warner Brothers World Abu Dhabi is also set to expand to include a Harry Potter attraction, although the opening date has not yet been confirmed.

“We want to bring ideas from different parts of the world as well as showcase our own culture and heritage,” Yusuf said.

Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy 2030 also includes goals to increase hotel room supply from 34,000 to 52,000 and to extend the average international overnight hotel stay from 3.2 to 3.9 nights.

“We aim to grow both our luxury and affordable luxury offering,” Yusuf added.

The pipeline of new properties includes Liwa Hotel by Autograph Collection, opening in 2025 in the Liwa Desert, and Nobu Hotel Abu Dhabi, set to open in 2027 on Saadiyat Island.

Mandarin Oriental Residences Saadiyat Island is also in development, featuring 228 branded residences.

12/11/2024

Dubai’s high end real estate sector has reached a new peak with the rental of an ultra-luxury villa at AED8.5 million over two years.

The record-breaking deal for a 24,000sq ft villa in the exclusive Umm Al Sheif area again underlines the city’s appeal to wealthy investors, and shows a growing demand for premium, ready-to-move-in homes.

It was managed between fäm Living and fäm Lux, divisions of fäm Properties catering to ultra-high-net-worth clients and managing fully furnished luxury rentals.

“With Dubai attracting an elite audience of millionaires and billionaires, demand for premium, fully furnished, move-in-ready properties is intensifying,” said Firas Al Msaddi, CEO of fäm Properties.

While the UAE is forecast to attract an additional 6,700 millionaires by the end of 2024, the Dubai market has a limited supply of ultra-luxury villas.

DXB Interact reports that of the 61,558 villas set for completion over the next three years, only 379 are priced at AED60 million or higher, 833 fall within the AED30-60 million range, and 2,854 are priced between AED15-30 million.

“This limited inventory, combined with Dubai’s reputation as a top destination for high-net-worth individuals, points to strong growth potential in the ultra-luxury segment,” said Al Msaddi.

“The demand for high-end properties is also evident in the resale market, especially for apartments priced above AED10 million. Between 2023 and 2024, resale transactions in this segment surged by more than 25%, from AED9.8 billion to AED12.4 billion.

“Notably, this increase includes only resale transactions, and excludes off-plan sales, indicating a strong and consistent demand for luxury properties in Dubai.”

In recent years, the market for properties above AED10 million, encompassing both first-sales from developers, and resale transactions, has experienced major growth.

DXB Interact data reveals that ultra-luxury apartments and villas generated a record AED86.1 billion in sales in 2023, a dramatic leap of 1,245% from AED6.4 billion AED in 2016.
