On 6 august 2024, Ukrainian soldiers attacked the Russian Kursk Oblast. In a surprise move that stunned the imperialist agressors in Moscow, the Ukrainian Army was able to capture 28 towns by 18 August. Kyiv claims they also captured a lot of Russian conscripts who surrendered win-out a fight. This shows us that the attack was a complete surprise for the Russian side and that they failed to see it coming. As of 18 August, Russia lost over 1.000 km2 to the invading Ukrainian Army. Despite this moral boost, we revolutionary socialists do not think that capturing small pockets of Russia, will end this war.

The masses in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh have overthrown the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina. This capitalist leader had been in power since 2009 and mainly pursued policies that served the country’s capitalist class. Sheikh Hasina and her Awami League mainly played on nationalism and populism. In the 1970s the party still had a left-wing signature. It is also for this reason that the country bears the name People’s Republic of Bangladesh and that it is included in the constitution that the country would realize socialism. Of course, this was never implemented after 1991 because the Awami League started supporting neoliberalism.

Presidential elections are coming in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Ridiculed as a ”socialist” failure by the capitalist media, Venezuela proofs why mixing social-democracy with nationalism does not work. Hugo Chavez failed to build socialism as he never moved away from capitalism. What the populist leader did was state intervention, but that is not socialism. After he died in 2013, Nicolas Maduro increased power for the deeply corrupt Venezuelan state, making deals with sections of the ruling class and the military. The social programs that once helped the poor have been halted and austerity measures have resulted in millions leaving the country. Western imperialism also helped to destabilise the nation which resulted in Maduro now enforcing austerity to please the very class that always hated him.

On Thursday April 25, Bogdan Syrotiuk – a socialist opponent of the Zelensky regime and the Ukraine-Russia war – was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine, the SBU, in his hometown of Pervomaisk in southern Ukraine.

Bogdan, who is 25 years old and in poor health, is being held in a prison in Nikolaev under atrocious conditions on fraudulent charges of serving the interests of Russia. In fact, Bogdan is an intransigent opponent of the capitalist Putin regime and its invasion of Ukraine. He fights for the unity of the working class in Ukraine, Russia and throughout the former Soviet Union

Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt and has become more popular, now that he can play the role of martyr. The picture of a bleeding Trump with his raised fist below the American flag has a good chance of becoming: The Picture of 2024. With Joe Biden not seeking re-election in November, Donald Trump has a shot of becoming the next president. But it does not have to be. During the general election in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland a huge minority choose not to vote. This can be understandable, if you have only a choice between pro-capitalist candidates in your district, why vote for them? The choice for many was either the capitalist: Conservative Party, the capitalist: Labour Party, the capitalist: Liberal Democrats or the capitalist: Reform UK. Over 39,9% choose not to vote because of the British electoral district system. This general election had the lowest voter-turn out since 2001, proofing that the capitalist representatives are not trusted by at least 39,9% of the voters.

Mark Rutte, the de-missionary prime minister of the Netherlands, is about to become the general secretary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Rutte became leader of the right-wing: People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD in Dutch) in 2006. He replaced Jan Peter Balkenende as prime minister in 2010. The cabinets of Rutte varied from coalitions with social-liberals of Democrats 66 to social-democrats from the Party of Labour. However all were build around the central idea of serving Dutch capitalism. Rutte was able to keep his party the biggest in the Dutch parliament until the far-right Party for Freedom defeated the VVD in 2023.

There will be elections for the European Parliament on June 6. Although important, it does not exactly live within the Netherlands. In the previous elections, only 45% of voters turned out to vote, even though many decisions are made at European level. The Netherlands is dependent on the European market and the European Parliament has influence on this. Yet it is also understandable that there is little connection with the European Union. This union is not for workers, the EU was created for business, for the free movement of goods and people. Unfortunately, the alternative to the EU is not being pursued by the political left, allowing the populist extreme right to score.

We knew that Trump was already a criminal, but now the former president is a actual criminal in the eyes of the U.S Justice. His brainwashed supporters will keep supporting him. The president-puppet of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is death. Ebrahim Raisi was the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, until he died of a helicopter crash on 19 May. Revolutionary socialists do not mourn the death of this reactionary puppet, who had no real power as the President of Iran is only the face of the government, while the Supreme Leader of Iran is the actual leader of the nation. Ali Khamenei already said that nothing will change and in six months a new puppet president will be ”elected”. Since Iran is not a free society, the presidential election is just a facade!

It started with Christopher Hitchens who praised the invasion of Iraq, Sam Harris who hailed the bombings in Libya & Syria and now Richard Dawkins who opposes the LGBT+ community and sides with the State of Israel. The almighty ’’bastion of freedom of speech’’ has just exposed itself as not so free. Across the western world, students are demanding that their universities cut ties with Israeli institutions. The response from their government is that of mass arrests and police violence. In the USA over 1500 students have been arrested for protesting at university campuses. Right-wing politicians call for mass arrests and even (capitalist) social-democrats and greens use the power of the state to crush the brave students who stand up for Palestine.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands is one of the few European countries, were Labour Day or 1 May is not a free day. Despite that social-democrats participated in Dutch governments, the first of May was never declared a free day for workers. This is mainly because the Party of Labour is not radical nor revolutionary. In coalition with liberals and conservatives, the Dutch social-democrats behaved moderate and in line with the power structures of capitalism.

Eastern Europe was not the first continent that broke with Stalinism. In fact China had started to embrace capitalism as early as 1978. It was the Chinese ’’Communist’’ Party that first started with Special Economic Zones, long before Mikhail Gorbachev was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet-Union (CPSU). The Chinese and many sectarian Stalinists had attacked the USSR for abandoning classic Stalinism after 1956. Now those sectarian Maoists were the first who embraced capitalism. The Vietnamese and Laotians followed with Doi Moi in 1986 and finally Eastern Europe under Soviet leadership slowly started to embraced the market dictatorship. Despite the promise of improvements, capitalism did not help working class people.

The Republic of Haiti can be called one the worst failed states in the world. Perhaps it is the most failed nation on the planet. Former Labour Party MP and Respect Party leader George Galloway has won the Rochdale by-election on the platform of the Workers Party of Britain. Galloway is not a stranger to the British House of Lords. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Labour Party from 1987 until 2005. Because Galloway rejected the invasion of Iraq, Tony Blair kicked him out of the Labour Party. Galloway then founded the Respect Party and was an MP from 2005 until 2015. The capitalist establishment has always hated him for his rejected of their imperialist methods and his opposition to the pro-capitalist course of the Labour Party.

At the age of 73, Captain Paul Watson is a legend in the struggle against illegal whaling and fishing. Although not a revolutionary or even a socialist, Watson understood that the methods of Greenpeace were not enough to stop the murder of innocent animals in the name of tradition and profiteering. After being forced out of Greenpeace, Paul Watson founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in the USA. His first direct action was against the Canadian seal hunting in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in March 1979. Watson became famous on television when Whale Wars exposed the Japanese whaling program. However the Commander of Neptune’s Navy was betrayed and forced out of Sea Shepherd in 2022, forcing the old sea fighter to return to his roots as a fighter of direct action.

In late February 2024, it will be two years after the Russians started their imperialist invasion of Ukraine. Despite that the whole western world supplied Ukraine with weapons, the reality is now clear that the former Soviet republic is not in a position to start an offensive against the Empire of Vladimir Putin. The Russian imperialists have dug themselves in and the summer attack of Ukraine failed to capture the occupied southern parts. Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told the Ukrainians that their nation would win with NATO support, that is still the propaganda coming from Kyiv. Reality is that after two years the war has entered a stalemate, with Ukraine not able to recapture what it lost to Russian imperialism.

The British Trotskyist group: Socialist Appeal has changed its newspaper and name. Those who are active inside the revolutionary left-wing know the organisation as the largest section of the International Marxist Tendency (IMT). Socialist Appeal was created in 1992 as the voice of revolutionary socialists who choose to remain inside the British: Labour Party. Now after 32 years, they have chosen to rebrand themselves as communists by launching the Revolutionary Communist Party.

The RMS Queen Mary must be a public owned museum and hotel under workers self management. We cannot trust capitalist enterprises to run this historic ship on a pure profit motive. Had the city council not step in, the ship would never have gotten any renovation and repair work.
