2024 marks the twelfth edition of the Top 100 competition, which was set up to discover, select and promote the best wines from the Languedoc, Roussillon, and South-West of France, extending to the Rhône Valley.

As in previous years we very much enjoyed visiting this year’s trade tasting of the winning entries from the Sud de France Top 100 Competition.

It’s certainly a powerful Mother of Water. For a start the Mekong is the world’s 12th longest river influencing six countries and bringing life and a livelihood to millions...

It wasn’t love at first sight. But for sure Anna Hyman was interested! She had always been fascinated by rivers, and this one – the Mekong, also known as Mother of Water – sounded interesting and exciting.

Anna Hyman had been away for too long. The years had gone by so quickly and her last visit must have been at least 12 years earlier. It was definitely time to return to Jersey. Anna Hyman set out to learn more about this picturesque food producing area known as the Marais Audomarois whilst discovering several other tasty foody destinations in the Hauts-de-France as well. For something to be awarded UNESCO World Heritage status it has to be pretty special, and the German State of Saxony-Anhalt has not one, not two, but six such awards. As Anna Hyman discovered they are all very different, and all worthy of their awards.

The opening two paragraphs of Julie Pointer Adams delightfully idyllic book ‘Al Fresco’ was enough for me to know that this was a read I was going to enjoy. In the Preface Julie describes her pleasure and love of being alone in the New Brunswick countryside, on a rocky beach, in a wood, picking wild berries or generally spending time in the great outdoors....

Each of the delicious sounding recipes is headed by a brief introduction. Last week a friend and I met up for lunch at the Old Brompton Road branch of Byron, the American-inspired chain diner and home of the "poshburger", (once famously patronised by George Osbourne). These days it has twenty-one branches; this one's handy for South Kensington tube, and also of course for the V&A, Science Museum and Natural History Museum. So at 12.30 mid-week at the end of March we weren't too surprised to find it bustling with customers, many of them family groups enjoying an outing at the beginning of the school holidays....
