It’s been really cool brining these guys in. On our way to 300hrs if burn in. Stopped after 24hrs to hear the woofers starting to relax. After 150 hrs the high end and midrange are starting to blossom. Excited to hear to low end extend and tighten at 300hrs.
Hey mixer friends! Do you null your plugins? When you null your plugins you can hear what noise or artifacts they introduce into your signal. Or hear what the plugin sounds like. Every plugin, analog/digital piece of equipment has a thumb print.
@meterplugs Perception A|B has been one of the constant plugins I've used over last few years. It's not just for mastering, either. There are a whole range of uses for mixers. Thanks @shepherd_ij for coming up with this. Mixing friends go check it out.
Hey all! I want to alert you to a cool new audio player my friend @druthordare built me for my website. Now you can toggle back and forth between the original and the master seamlessly as the tune plays! I hope it can show you what mastering can do for your songs! larrymckaymastering.com
How much headroom should I leave for mastering?
Well, it's pretty subjective. Mastering Engineers tend to either boost the gain going into their desks/equipment, or they will attenuate it. It's all about their particular signal chain.
So, If you have a hot mix and it feels good, keep it!! Just please don't go over 0 dbfs or slam a limiter. Stay classy on your stereo bus!
What levels do you aim for in your mixes? Peak and RMS?
I was recently asked, "If you were an artist, how would you go about selecting a mastering engineer for your music?" Good question! So here is what I would do to choose my ME.
1.) I would ask for referrals from other bands or artists I play shows with. Or the back of records I admire.
2.) Google for mastering services in my area and listen to their demo reel.
3.) I would ask multiple different ME's for samples. Then make my decision on which one is the closest to my sonic vision.
4.) Once a ME is selected I would send over samples of different music that I would want my album to sound like. Stuff that sonically grabs you.
5.) I would not be afraid to ask for adjustments. It's your vision at the end of the day. Not the engineers. We translate that vision into sonic reality.
