Tonight’s Full Moon 🐺
People from different cultures gave Full Moons names that represented peculiarities of a lunar month in which they occur. Throughout cold January nights, the howling of wolves could be heard around villages in both Europe and America, so the January Full Moon became widely known as the Wolf Moon.

The Earth’s rotation over 5 hrs featuring the Milky Way. Almost all the streak flashes are satellites (there was a couple of meteors). The Andromeda galaxy (2 million light years away 🤯) makes an appearance towards the end top left ‘ish + Jupiter bottom right 🪐

The Milky Way over Dartmoor. I loved how the sidewards tree has a similar contour to the galaxy. The bright object above the tor is Jupiter with Saturn to the right 🪐
Hours of post production to get make this image. Swipe to see one of the straight from camera captures, the bright area lower right is light pollution from small towns to the south west. You can also see a few bright lines, these are f**in satellites. We have to shoot so many more exposures these days often ruining certain compositions if waiting for satellites to pass. It took a couple of hours patient shooting to get this composition right. Thanks to Starlink (Space X’s plan to stream the internet from 10’s of thousands of low Earth orbit satellites) this is only gonna get harder.

I shot these at the weekend in a really dark sky area, before the moon rose. They are very long exposures of an area of sky about the size of a phone held at arms length. So many stars 🤯

Very cloudy in Bristol today but managed to snag a few shots of the partial lunar eclipse this morning. On the plus side, the light was so diffuse I could safely see it with sunglasses on 😎

This is my entry for the recent Alternative Realities Challenge by Clinton Jones . Nb. It’s a super wide frame shot so Instagram has cropped it. If you want to see the uncropped version I’ve also cut a quick VFX breakdown video which is up on my website, YouTube, and Vimeo.
Great fun working on this for the last few weeks. Learned a shed load more about VFX. So much fantastic art was submitted in this challenge, over 2400 pieces in fact. Congrats to all who entered🏅

‘Lost in the Forest’ 🛰
Designed this scene with an ageing SpaceX Dragon capsule in a forest. The model gave me some headaches, but learned a lot as usual. That’s what it’s all about.
Trying to mimic nature in vfx takes some serious patience. After building the assets I ended up applying the particle systems at a point, then manually shifted plants and foliage around to get a look that worked. The aim is to try and allude to the natural chaos of it all.

Managed to capture the huge asteroid *Vesta* from my garden over the last couple of nights ☄️
Put together this little video blinking between the two exposures which I managed to position and colour match pretty well. Shame the weather isn’t clearer, I would have done a series over a few nights. Vesta is currently in the lower left of the Leo constellation. 85mm.
Vesta facts. This thing is huge. One of the largest objects in the asteroid belt, with a mean diameter of 525 kilometres (326 mi). Vesta is the second-largest asteroid, both by mass and by volume, after the dwarf planet Ceres. On 16 July 2011 NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around Vesta for a one-year exploration and left orbit on 5 September 2012] en route to its final destination, the dwarf planet Ceres. Vesta was discovered on March 29, 1807 by astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers.
