“For me, the greatest value was receiving developmental feedback on my manuscript and outlines from skilled and thoughtful editors with so much experience. I also greatly appreciated their interest in my story and characters; it helped to make it all feel 'real' and out there in the world as opposed to merely existing just in my head. I also enjoyed the opportunity to hear from the different departments at Annick and gain a better picture of all the complexities that happen behind-the-scenes to bring a book to fruition. It was super interesting!” —Shawne Yukimi MacIntyre

“As a neurodivergent individual, the most valuable thing that I got out of the Annick Press Mentorship program was increased confidence as a writer. I can find it challenging to navigate my joy of writing with my difficulty in getting the story onto the page. The editors I worked with, Katie and Jieun, consistently asked questions that gave me more insight into how I could untangle what I saw in my head and what I wanted to say. After my time in the mentorship program, I even felt confident enough to apply for an arts grant to fund additional development for my project. I'm so appreciative to the editorial team at Annick for this program and for pulling back the curtain on the publishing process for emerging writers from underrepresented groups.” —Calyssa Erb

Happy Canadian release day to Âhâsiw’s Forest Powwow! 💚 This delightful early chapter book kicks off the brand-new Sarah Ponakey, Storycatcher series, celebrating Cree culture and the journey to staying true to yourself.

Applications for Annick's mentorship program open on September 3rd.🤩 The program is for writers who have been historically excluded from children’s publishing. Over the next couple of weeks we will be showcasing testimonials from past mentees. Today’s quote comes from Jack Wong:

“Participating in the Annick Press Mentorship program was an eye-opening look at what's possible when you open your work to meaningful collaboration. My editor Katie Hearn was already passionate about my manuscript from the start—yet we were able to take it in new plot directions I couldn't have imagined! Importantly, I also learned that this was nothing to be afraid of, and that someone doesn't need to have the exact experience as you in order to make a positive mark on a personal story; empathy, sensitivity, and shared investment count just as much. Through the program's mandate to provide substantial mentorship, I got this from Katie in ways I haven't experienced elsewhere, including in other published projects.” —Jack Wong

Applications for Annick's mentorship program open on September 3rd.🤩 The program is for writers who have been historically excluded from children’s publishing. Over the next couple of weeks we will be showcasing testimonials from past mentees. Today’s quote comes from Sahar Golshan:

“I had a very positive experience as a participant in the Annick Press Mentorship program. Taking part in the program was my first time writing for children. Despite being brand-new to this space, I felt safe to experiment and explore. My two mentor-editors were active cheerleaders of my project. Having two people who were passionate about my story allowed me to stay confident and committed to its advancement. I received beneficial notes on my story drafts. I also enjoyed the exploratory conversations with my mentor-editors, which supported the development of the shape of the story. The most valuable component of the program was that my mentor-editors were open to answering my many questions about storytelling and publication. This helped demystify the publishing industry. I really value that this mentorship includes a payment for the writer's participation.”—Sahar Golshan

✨COVER REVEAL✨

Weeks ago, I watched cicadas molting in the moonlight, and tears came to my eyes. “We really got it right,” I thought, as Sarah Whang’s illustrations unfolded in real life. So I’m thrilled to reveal the cover of our upcoming picture book, When the Air Sang.

This book reflects so many corners of my heart. My oldest kid spotting our first cicada as we explored the backyard under lockdown in 2020. My youngest kid joyfully playing with ants and roly polys. My grandmother leading walks through the nature preserve. My mom reading the Annick Press books that lined my childhood shelves.

When the Air Sang is a story of curiosity and nature, but it’s also a story of hope and memory and connection. Annie’s family isn’t my family. But when you read their story, I hope you feel the love behind every page.

✨When the Air Sang is available for pre-order now, and will be on shelves on April 8, 2025!✨

Thank you to …
• My editor, Jieun Lee, who pushed me to strive for more.
• … you and Sam Tse are a dream team. I can’t wait for the world to see the rich and evocative beauty you’ve created.
• Dr. Gene Kritsky, “the Indiana Jones of cicadas,” who taught me more about these incredible insects.
• , for seeing my vision from the start.

✨Synopsis✨

A gorgeous picture book about a young insect enthusiast who learns about the ever-mysterious cicada and how our curiosity about nature never truly goes away.

Annie is tired of waiting for the cicadas to finally appear: every day, they show hints of their upcoming arrival, but to her disappointment, they seem to be taking their sweet time coming out. As Annie’s anticipation builds to bursting, she is joined first by her great-grandmother, then her grandmother, then her mother—each of whom has her own cicada story to tell. When the magnificent insects finally appear and sing their incredible songs, Annie realizes some things are worth the wait.

✨Cover Reveal✨

I am a second-generation immigrant. Growing up, my parents were constantly working to provide a living for our family. I remember missing them while they were at work and having big emotions around it. Managing those emotions wasn’t really something we openly talked about. Even as an adult, I’m still finding healthy outlets for my big emotions.

I am thrilled to share the cover of MANDEEP’S CLOUDY DAYS, illustrated by Samrath Kaur, with all of you. The illustrations are truly captivating and you can really see and feel Mandeep’s emotions throughout the story.

A huge thank you to Gayna Theophilus and the Annick Press team for seeing the value in this story and working with me to make it so much better than I imagined.

MANDEEP’S CLOUDY DAYS celebrates the relationship between a father and daughter and explores the big emotions that arise when a parent is busy working to provide for their family.

✨Synopsis✨

A beautiful picture book exploring how to cope with difficult and complex emotions when we’re away from the people we love.

Spending time with her dad makes Mandeep’s days shine. They have cha parties, perform Bhangra shows, and best of all, they write jokes together in her favorite unicorn journal. But when Dad starts a job as a truck driver, he starts being away from home most of the week. Without Dad, storm clouds start taking over Mandeep’s sunny days, casting a shadow on all the things she used to love doing. Can anything help Mandeep feel better?

The dynamic author-illustrator team behind the National Council Teachers of English Notable Children’s Book winner My Name Is Saajin Singh brings a new poignant story about father-daughter relationships, how we cope with being separated from our loved ones, and how to find glimpses of light in our days even when clouds threaten to settle in.

✨Who Is this Mentorship For?

Our mentorship program is for writers who have been historically excluded from children’s publishing. This includes but is not limited to LGBTQ2SIA+ writers, Black writers, Indigenous writers, writers of colour, writers living with disabilities, and anyone living at the intersections of these identities.

✨Why did we start this program?

We wanted to take concrete steps to address issues of inequity and representation in kids publishing by offering writers time, professional guidance, compensation, and an opportunity to learn more about an industry that has not provided equal access to everyone. And, we are always looking for ways to connect with new creators and support them in sharing their stories.

✨Why should you apply?

- You’re looking for an opportunity to develop a kids’ book project one-on-one with an experienced editor.
- You’re interested in learning more about the children’s publishing industry in Canada.
- You’ll receive personalized feedback on your application–even if you aren’t selected as a mentee.
