❤️🕯️Countdown to KWANZAA 🕯️💚

It’s 2 days until the start of Kwanzaa, and I’ll be sharing a children’s book about Kwanzaa each day.

The six book in our countdown is “Celebra Kwanzaa con Botitas y sus gatotios” by F. Isabel Campoy and Alma Flor Ada.

Kwanzaa is an American holiday, and more than 13% of Americans speak Spanish, so I love that there is a Kwanzaa book for kids that is written in Spanish! This book is also in English by the same authors.

The book follows a family trying to find their missing cat while the story tells how they use the principles of Kwanzaa along the way.

———————————————

What is Kwanzaa?! ❤️🖤💚

Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated mostly by the African-American community, but open to all. It is a reminder to African-Americans and pan-Africans that we still have a connection to the culture that we were denied due to the enslavement of our ancestors. Kwanzaa is an encouragement to reflect on that culture and continue to build on it by living intentionally.

Kwanzaa follows 7 principles (Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work & Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith) and really holds children up high. The only traditional gifts that are given are books, educational toys, and artwork for kids (adults don’t typically receive or exchange gifts).

———————————————

Join us each day as I share more about Kwanzaa as we count down to the first day, and stick around as I share about each day’s principle during the week of Kwanzaa - December 26 - January 1.

❤️🕯️Countdown to KWANZAA 🕯️💚

It’s 3 days until the start of Kwanzaa, and I’ll be sharing a children’s book about Kwanzaa each day.

The fifth book in our countdown is “Seven Candles for Kwanzaa” by Andrea Davis Pinkney, a Black author.

I really love this book for its illustrations (by Brian Pinkney, the author’s husband) and its simple explanation of so many aspects of Kwanzaa throughout the story. Words are defined when they are first mentioned, and a pronunciation is provided beside them, as well. When the story starts to talk about the 7 days and principles of Kwanzaa, the Kinara (candle holder) is illustrated for each day, and shows the order in which the candles are to be lit (it alternates and can be confusing the first few times you do it).

Add this illustrated children’s Kwanzaa book to your list to read a sweet story highlighting so many beautiful aspects of Black/African-American culture, and to learn how to celebrate Kwanzaa all throughout it.

❤️🕯️Countdown to KWANZAA 🕯️💚

It’s 4 days until the start of Kwanzaa, and I’ll be sharing a children’s book about Kwanzaa each day.

The fourth book in our countdown is “Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story” by Angela Shelf Medearis, a Black author (I keep pointing this out because not all authors of books about Kwanzaa have experience with the holiday, nor are they Black - they approach a book from a research aspect instead of a lived experience aspect).

“Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story” is a tale written in the form of a proverbial African story. Seven brothers in an African village use the 7 Principles of Kwanzaa (nguzo saba) to accomplish a goal mandated in their father’s will. I love the bright and dark contrasting images and how the story teaches kids the principles of Kwanzaa in a beautifully crafted story 💚

❤️🕯️Countdown to KWANZAA 🕯️💚

It’s 5 days until the start of Kwanzaa, and I’ll be sharing a children’s book about Kwanzaa each day during this countdown.

The third book in our countdown is “It’s Kwanzaa Time” by Linda and Clay Goss, with contributions from their entire family, and stories by various authors.

“It’s Kwanzaa Time” gives an anecdote and tells a story for each day of Kwanzaa and shares which candle to light, the principle, and a symbol before each story.

The back of the book includes songs, DIY zawadi (gift) ideas, games, patterns for clothing, and recipes for the Karamu feast.

I love how thorough this book is. The stories and songs make me excited to celebrate, and the book overall brings the energy that kids love when it comes to celebrating and having fun.

❤️🕯️Countdown to KWANZAA 🕯️💚

It’s 6 days until the start of Kwanzaa, and I’ll be sharing a children’s book about Kwanzaa each day.

The second book in our countdown is “Together for Kwanzaa” by Juwanda G. Ford, a Black author.

The main character, Kayla, is sad that her big brother, Khari, might not make it home from college to celebrate Kwanzaa with their family like he usually does. The family goes on celebrating as usual, and the book explains and gives the pronunciation for each day’s principle as they talk about it in the story. There is a happy ending because her brother makes it home in time to celebrate Karamu, the feast on the 6th day of Kwanzaa.

I love that this book shows a family that is looking forward to Kwanzaa, the same way my family does. While Kwanzaa is a relatively new holiday, it brings us together in such a meaningful way. We reflect on how our family has exemplified the principles in the past, and how we’d like to continue to live by them in the upcoming year.

❤️🕯️Countdown to KWANZAA 🕯️💚

It’s 7 days until the start of Kwanzaa, and I’ll be sharing a children’s book about Kwanzaa each day.

The first book in our countdown is “Li’l Rabbit’s Kwanzaa” by Donna L. Washington, a Black author.

Li’l Rabbit’s Granna is the one who usually organizes and cooks for Karamu, the big feast on the 6th day of Kwanzaa. But this year, she is sick! Li’l Rabbit wants Kwanzaa to go on as usual, so she starts enlisting the help of many of the adults around her. They may not know much about Kwanzaa or the Karamu feast, but they know Granna and how she is a polar in their community. Because of that, they want to contribute however they can.

Li’l Rabbit helps pull off the feast, and everyone is so happy about it! Just when she thinks she didn’t contribute anything at all, Granna reminds her that the feast happened because of Li’l Rabbit’s determination!

This book is a great reminder that even the youngest among us can make a big, positive difference. The story shows many ways to follow the principles of Kwanzaa, and the glossary in the back helps children learn the 7 Principles of Kwanzaa.

is 30 days of chilling the heck out and leaning heavily into my cozy homeschool mom era…

The summer months and the kick off for the 2023-2024 homeschool school year have been HECTIC. The amount of activities we’ve participated in has been impressive and fun, but quite EXCESSIVE. It’s time to take a break and move like the seasons. Let’s slow down and get cozy with autumn.

But let's keep it real - we still have plenty to do. However, I am cutting out the excess and filling it with slow moments at home with family. Join me on this photo/reel/story challenge and take time to revel in the small moments that really make the sweetest memories in our lives.

The best part? There’s no pressure to post everyday. Post when you feel like it. Rest and skip posting on the days that you don’t want to.

Tag and when you tell your stories as you slow down this fall.

⭐️ SEPTEMBER 2023 ⭐️

Wow this month has been wonderfully full, and has really flown by.

🗓️ We’re back in our homeschool routine. Our “Back To Homeschool” celebration was a lot of fun!
📍 We’ve taken so many exciting field trips and outings with homeschool friends
📚 Co-op has been a huge success. We haven’t gotten together like this since they were pre-k age. It’s so nice to have an “official” co-op now that they are of school age
📝 We’re tweaking our routine as we go and still trying to see what works best for us, but things have been going smoothly so far. Not trying to keep a strict daily schedule and “going with the flow” is helpful.
👶🏽 I’m really out here homeschooling a big kid while I also have a baby. WHAT?! It feels like the Wild Wild West trying to get everything done some days 😂 I’m super grateful when my husband can help by taking the baby while I’m instructing. Baby wearing helps sometime. This is definitely the adventure of a lifetime 😂 parenting is wild 😂😂

What’s been your favorite part or takeaway from this September?

I hope September has been good to y’all 🫶🏾 and I hope you have something to look forward to in October 🧡

HOMESCHOOL IS WHEREVER WE GO 🗺️📍

The first picture was taken at because it was a super cool mural. The second picture was taken on a hike the other day while we were trying to do a bird nest nature study. We never found any nests, but we saw this spider! I joined an entomology group on Facebook a while back because G wants to study insects. It was after I posted the real spider to ask for identification in that group that I realized I’d seen one like it before on G’s birthday experience trip. Connecting moments like this make our home learning journey even more fun than it already is 😆🙌🏾

Looking back at old unit studies and activities we did early on because I’m very excited to get started with this year’s “back to homeschool” season 😆

My favorite unit studies have been the ones that G has suggested. He gets so excited when the things he loves are what we talk about in school. I created a dinosaur unit study back in January, signed him up for the dinosaur club on patreon with (this was actually his Christmas present), downloaded some projects and lessons from and other sources that I found by googling, checked out a LOT of books about dinos, and of course visited the museum to see the fossil models and the paleontologists at work on real fossils.

This season he wants to study insects and fish, so I’ll be sharing some of the resources I come across and create as we complete those subjects.

What has been a favorite unit study that you and your kids have completed?
