Throwback to when Jeepney Café launched in 2014!

CANADA– For over for over 40 years, Vancouver's Cooperative Radio Station has been 'a voice for the voiceless', and one of the loudest heard over the radio waves is from a group of Filipino-Canadians in a program called 'Jeepney Café'.

Tune in to Jeepney Café's Land, Life and Liberation radio show tonight, airing in less than an hour! Don't miss this month's show on Vancouver Co-op Radio CFRO, airing tonight from 5-6pm PST at 100.5fm! Can't listen live? Catch it later online at coopradio.org/shows/jeepney-cafe/.

Since this is our first show of the year, we're looking back at our last year of shows and airing excerpts from some of our favourites. Thought it was another year of the pandemic and being out of the studio, we still brought you some amazing guests and highlighted important issues last year, from Filipino solidarity with Palestinian and Indigenous struggles, to labour and migrant rights organizing here and in the Philippines. Revisit these episodes with us tonight! We include a special callout for donations to Sagip Migrante, Migrante Canada's calamity response project that's providing relief to communities affected by Typhoon Odette (Rai). To donate, please e-transfer [email protected] with "Sagip Migrante" in the notes box.

It is the second Saturday of the month, which means we’ve got another great show for you TODAY at 5pm! Don’t miss out as our co-host Lara Maestro covers the Canadian federal election, shining a spotlight on the differences among the three parties and their approach to immigration issues and migrant concerns. She’ll also dig into Filipino representation in Canadian politics and catch you up on the Filipinos who are currently running for federal offices.

In addition, Lara Maestro explores Canada’s role in human rights violations in the Philippines. She shares a compilation of voices of activists who are continuously pressuring the Canadian government to hold, for example, Canadian mining corporations accountable for their role in human rights violations and environmental destruction in the Philippines.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn about the policies and issues that matter to Filipino Canadians!

Guess what? We’ve got another great show for your listening ears. Today at 5pm, be sure to tune into 100.5 FM as co-hosts Lara Maestro and Chris Sorio talk with two Filipino migrants and activists to get the latest on migrant issues, from the many challenges our kababayan are continuing to endure under the pandemic to the barriers they face with voting.

From the frontlines, Stef Martin and Danilo De Leon share the concerns and sentiments of migrants and make the case for why it is so important for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to vote. Don’t miss the opportunity to deepen and broaden your perspective on the migrant struggle and the significant role they have in shaping the Philippines.

We also invite you to:

Later this afternoon we will be broadcasting a difficult but important discussion we had about the unmarked mass grave sites at Indian Residential Schools - an egregious reality that many of us are continuing to have a visceral response to.

As of today, more than 1100 children were found buried in these secret unmarked graves sites, or what many are calling "crime scenes". Given the over 150,000 indigenous children systematically forced to leave their families to attend these residential schools, experts believe there are several thousand more bodies yet to uncover.

We sit down with two indigenous Filipinxs who actively work with First Nations communities across Turtle Island, the Philippines, and beyond. Together and through conversation, we try to process the acts of ethnocide and genocide carried out by the Canadian government and Catholic Church at these Indian Residential Schools. More importantly, we explore ways in which we can exercise solidarity with our indigenous brothers and sisters.

Please tune in this afternoon and we invite you to share any resources below in the comments that can inform folx on how they can get involved in ensuring these children, their families, and communities receive love, support, and justice.

We hope you will join us this afternoon.

Land, Life & Liberation is broadcasting another important show later this afternoon/evening. In recognition of Philippine "Hindipendence" we have invited THREE very special guests to talk to us about the serious affronts to and .

Dalya Al Masri unpacks the recent bombings and shellings by Israeli forces in that have resulted in the destruction of Palestinian schools and communities, as well as the deaths of innocent civilians. She also breaksdown the significance of movements and recognizes the connections being made between Filipino, Palestinian, and Black activists. Be sure to tune in to hear her recommendations on what you can do NOW to support Palestine!

Tita Treenee Lopez and Tito Jose Lim give us the latest on the dispute. Despite having won the tribunals, meaning the West Philippine Sea is legally recognized to be within Philippine territory, this vast resource rich region remains in the hands of China. Both Tita Treenee and Tito Jose unpack why this is the case and what is needed to enforce the tribunal ruling and pressure China to leave the West Philippine Sea. Take my word for it, you do not want to miss out on this discussion!

Hope you can join us today at 5pm!

Last month, hotel workers at the Hilton Metrotown in Burnaby staged a one-day strike to protest the firing of 97 long-term workers. Hours later, these workers were “locked out”.

According to Zailda Chan, president of UNITE HERE Local 40m,“Hilton Metrotown is taking women and racialized workers hostage in order to impose permanent changes during the pandemic. When workers refused to accept management’s plan to get rid of their co-workers, the hotel fired them and locked out the rest. This hotel wants to undermine the economic security of women and immigrant workers who put this hotel on the map. We won’t let them get away with that.”

Mark your calendars, set an alarm, do whatever you need to do to make sure you catch tomorrow’s show as we dive into this ongoing dispute! Co-hosts Perry and Lara take our listeners to the front lines of last week’s UNITE HERE Local 40 picket line to talk to the hotel workers on strike. They also sit down with Vice Chairperson of Migrante BC, Marc Perez, to get his insight on the situation. You definitely don't want to miss this one!
