HOW MY FATHER TAUGHT ME TO DRIVE

Long before I had a license, before I could even reach the pedals, my dad sat me down in front of a Pole Position arcade game.
He’d pop in a quarter, place his hand on mine, and say, “Alright, keep it on the road.” I crashed a lot. Every. Single. Time. But he always laughed and said, “You’re getting better.”
That arcade was our racetrack.
Those turns were our first lessons.
And that game well, it wasn’t just a game. It was our bond.
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who taught us how to drive…
even if it started with a joystick and a screen.

This was our open world

Before 3D engines and endless side quests, we had a square, a key, and a dragon that looked like a duck, and it was epic. The box art lit the fire, but your imagination carried the rest.

No maps. No hand-holding. Just a joystick and a dream.

If you skated in the 80s, you know.

The Bones Brigade was more than a skate team it was a movement. Powell Peralta brought us legends: Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero, and Mike McGill. Their style, creativity, and fearless skating shaped an entire generation.

I grew up watching The Bones Brigade Video Show, Future Primitive, and The Search for Animal Chin on repeat. Those tapes didn’t just influence my skating… they influenced my life.
Total 80s skate magic.

What are you listening to?

The Sony Walkman wasn’t just a music player, it was freedom in your pocket.
You’d pop in your favorite mixtape, press play, and suddenly the school bus, the mall, your bedroom… became your concert stage.

Dragons Lair or Space Ace?

Back in the golden age of arcades laserdisc games like Dragons Lair and Space Ace weren’t just games they were animated adventures you could play. Watching those vibrant Don Bluth cartoons come to life on screen was pure magic especially for a kid in the 80s. But at a hefty 50 cents per play double the usual price you didn’t just drop a coin lightly.

Was this your childhood?

The warm glow of a CRT TV, an Atari 2600 ready to play, Star Wars figures standing guard, and shelves packed with classic 80s toys. Maybe a digital clock with red numbers ticking away in the corner. It was a simpler time—no apps, no internet—just pure joy, imagination, and unforgettable memories. The 80s weren’t just a decade, they were a vibe. And some of us never left.

Who remembers this game?

Krull, the 1983 arcade gem by Gottlieb, brought the epic fantasy film to life with fast-paced action and unforgettable moments. As kids, we were hooked by the glowing glaive, battling slayers, and rescuing the princess across beautifully animated stages. The game combined skill, timing, and imagination—just like the movie. In arcades filled with beeps and flashing lights, Krull stood out as a heroic journey we could play. One quarter at a time, we were part of the legend.

Three legends, side by side. Ms. Pac-Man, Donkey Kong Junior, and Donkey Kong. This is what the golden age of arcades looked like. The glow of the screens, the sound of 8-bit glory, and the thrill of chasing high scores with your friends after school. For those of us who lived it, this wasn’t just gaming, it was growing up.

Three Nintendo giants stand side by side!
Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, and Popeye—bright screens glowing, joysticks ready, and that familiar hum of arcade life. The scent of popcorn, the sound of clinking quarters, and the rush of childhood pride flood back. These weren’t just games—they were battlegrounds, friendships, and after-school dreams. You didn’t just play—you conquered. Every jump, every barrel, every spinach-powered punch felt like magic. This was the golden age, and we lived it.

Are you a fan of TRON?

In 1982, Tron lit up arcades and movie screens alike. The Tron arcade game immersed players in four dazzling levels of light cycles, tanks, and data battles—cutting-edge for its time. Meanwhile, Disney’s Tron film broke ground with its digital world and neon-drenched visuals. Together, they captured the spirit of early computing and the imagination of a generation. Whether in the theater or at the arcade, Tron made us all feel like we were inside the Grid.

What were you doing in 1982?

n 1982, Zaxxon took us to space with its groundbreaking isometric graphics and intense space battles. We lined up at the arcade, quarters in hand, ready to dodge walls and blast enemy fortresses. The joystick was our launchpad, and every high score felt like conquering the galaxy. Zaxxon was pure magic.
