Honoring and celebrating all of our Veterans today!
At 5:00am on this day, in the year 1918, Allied leaders signed a treaty, ending World War 1. The first of the great world wars. In Europe, November 11th is Armistice Day. In the US, it's Veterans Day. In my forthcoming novel, 4 Days in Paris, I tell a story about a really special encounter I had with two World War 1 and World War 2 Veterans at the Arc de Triomphe, and a special ceremony I was so lucky to attend in Paris on November 11, 1999.
I always like to take the time to send a special newsletter to my community on this day because not only do I come from a long line of veterans, I am a veteran myself. My service is not just something on my resume that I’m proud of. It’s present in my everyday because it changed me. It’s one of the things that most defines me as a business owner, a coach, a writer and even as a parent. My family has sacrificed tremendously over the years because of our service, and it's something that is just in my bones, in my soul.
I joined the Air Force in April 2001, in a time when many of us were naive enough to believe that wars were done. I thought I was joining a Peace force. And then September 11th and happened and my whole world turned upside down. The next seven years of my life were filled with deployments to the Middle East, support to two wars, and a lot of unexpected journeys.
I am proud of a lot of things, but I am the proudest of having served my country. And one thing I absolutely love is swapping stories with other veterans. I particularly enjoy just listening to those who came before me.
On that topic, I’d like to take a moment to remember my great uncle, Edward Kennedy, who passed away last week. He served in the Navy during World War 2, one of the few remaining WW2 Veterans... the generation that is all quickly leaving us. Soon, all we’ll have of that generation is the books written about them and the movies.
I wish I’d asked him more about his time in the Navy when I had the chance.
The stories of Veterans need to be told. Because they are so incredibly interesting, but also, sharing stories helps us remember the things that have happened in our past, so that hopefully we won’t repeat history. I loved working with my client, Gerri Hilger, on her book Our Duty. She did extensive research to tell a fictionalized version of her family’s story. I found it particularly moving and important because it centered the experiences of women, who are often marginalized when we talk about service, war and the impact it had on their lives.
After receiving a lot of feedback about her original cover - people felt the old cover made it seem like it was a war heavy story, but in reality, it's a tale of friendship during the war - we decided to redesign her cover. Here’s the new gorgeous cover. The picture is of the character in the book, Aggie, who is a very real women behind the story. In fact, Aggie celebrated her 100th birthday this year! If you want to honor her, consider grabbing this book to read her story! https://amzn.to/30fp67o
Thanks to Gerri for sharing this wonderful, feel-good story of women during war time, and thanks to all those who have served our country for sharing your stories, too, whether it’s in a book or with loved ones. It’s so important for new generations to appreciate your sacrifices.
So on this Veterans day, I want to say THANK YOU to anyone on our mailing list who served or has a family member or loved one who served. May we never forget the sacrifices our military members make.
Do you have a favorite book by a veteran you’d like to share? I’d love to hear about it!
