One of Tualatin’s newer and arguably more popular residents celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, a life that has impacted many in Oregon and beyond.

While history recognizes D-Day as beginning on June 6, 1944, the invasion truly started the previous night, as thousands of C-47 Dakota plane engines roared to life, ready to carry 13,348 paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions over Normandy shortly after midnight.

A few months back, we were honored to connect our friend and 490th Bomb Group Radio Operator James Lee Hutchinson with our friends across the pond at We Happy Few 506 for an in depth podcast interview about Hutch’s WWII experiences flying missions in B-17’s! Please check out this incredible interview, then look for any number of the incredible books that Hutch has written!

Hutch's Greatest Generation WWII Stories

Gathering invaluable stories from our WWII Veterans for another issue of “Mission Report”, we had the honor and privilege of interviewing 99 year old Bob Buckler from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area today. Bob was a tail-gunner on B-17’s in the 388th Bomb Group’s 562nd squadron. Bob and his crew were forced down in Sweden due to damage and lack of fuel on their 23rd mission and ended up spending close to 10 months interned in Sweden before being returned to England in December of 1944. What an incredible story this guy has to tell!

Bob Farmer and myself (Bryan Heim) have been extremely fortunate over the past 12 years with Living History Group Magazine to meet, interview, and become friends with WWII veterans as we learn their stories and share them with all of you.

We lost Joe Parish this week as he joined the big formation in the sky. It was on his terms, but the loss doesn’t hurt any less for us.

Joe Parish was one of those veterans who not only welcomed us with open arms, but shared WWII stories not even his family had heard. To say we are honored to have known Joe is not a big enough word. We hope that Joe realized that he touched our lives forever and we will always be grateful to have been part of his life.

To the Parish family and all of Joe’s friend we send our deepest prayers, thoughts, and love. Bob and I will always be better for having known Joe. Rest in Peace Sir - thank you for your service and friendship.

Our good friend and author Steve Snyder is going to be a special guest of the Veterans Breakfast Club tomorrow evening, talking about his incredible book “Shot Down”, and the “Masters of the Air” series currently airing on Apple TV. Joining Steve and the VBC will be B-17 Pilot “Lucky” Luckadoo of the 100th Bomb Group! Join in on Zoom at 7:00! You won’t want to miss this!

We can think of no better way to celebrate the release of “Masters of the Air” than to send a 100th Birthday card to a genuine Master of the Air!

Blessed to have been able to spend some time with 351st Bomb Group Tail Gunner Art Kemp on a few occasions, interviewing him about his WWII experience. February 9th is Art's 100th Birthday! Credited with shooting down two N**i fighters (one ME-109 and one FW-190), Art is one heck of a fascinating guy, and an active volunteer at the Champaign Aviation Museum in Urbana, Ohio.

In the words of our friend and author, Steve Snyder…. “It is our duty to remember”.

For his 100th birthday, let’s make certain to let Art know that we will continue to remember and share the stories of the sacrifices and courage of his generation.

Research is part of all jobs here at Living History Group Magazine and sometimes we find real gems in our research. We'd like to share this VERY RARE one of a kind TOP SECRET pilots training manual cover we found for the ultimate flying craft. "S" as it's know officially should be recognizable by all. We only wish the contents of the manual were present and not just a scan of the cover.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all from LHG Magazine, may your days be warm and bright! Bryan Heim & Bob Farmer

We’d like to thank our good friends at We Happy Few 506 for sharing the story of our dear friend, Joe Parish. What a treat it was for us to be able to help facilitate this Zoom interview between Joe here in the US, and the We Happy Few 506 folks in the UK!

Please have a listen, follow the We Happy Few 506 page, and help us all to spread the stories of the WWII generation!

This weeks episode is pretty special, we have joining us a World War 2 veteran and B-17 Top Turret gunner, Joe Parish. Joe flew with the 351st Bomb Group out of Polebrook, England and talks to us about his time during WW2.

Joe flew 10 combat missions during the War as well as a number of recovery missions when the War ended returning PoWs from France and Germany.

Without giving too much away, we will let Joe tell you himself.

Working in Evansville Indiana this week, we had the privilege of meeting a special World War II veteran with whom we’d wanted to shake hands for some time now.

James Lee Hutchinson served as a Radio Operator on B-17’s with the 490th Bomb Group out of Eye, England. Mr. Hutchinson is a bit of a celebrity in the WWII History/B-17/Social Media world as he is active on Facebook and YouTube, sharing his story, and the stories of other WWII veterans via those platforms. Additionally. 98 year young “Hutch” continues to write books about and share the stories of the WWII generation.

Many thanks to you Sir for your hospitality and the wonderful conversation. And more importantly, thank you for continuing to be an educator, documenting and sharing the stories of the sacrifices of your generation.

You can find any of the seven books that Hutch has written (so far) online. Amazon has them, or you can reach out to Hutch himself and he’ll personally sell you one and drop it in the mail. Additionally, you can find Tales from the Greatest Generation with James Lee Hutchinson on YouTube.

Many thanks to Matt, Doug, and Leighton of We Happy Few 506 for the opportunity to share our mission and experiences. A most enjoyable afternoon chatting!

In this weeks episode, the boys are joined by Bob and Bryan from the LHG Magazine. NOW they were originally meant to have joined us to give a presentation on what they do, a little bit on the restoration of the Memphis Belle and also the Cold Blue documentary but the boys got so sidetracked in chatting with these two and the incredible work they do in preserving stories through living history (also known as reenactment) but also documenting the stories of veterans whose stories haven't had the opportunity to be heard, as well as chatting about the new Masters of the Air trailer and expectations. One not to be missed!

Masters of the Air, a new World War II miniseries from the team behind Band of Brothers, has received a release date.

Masters of the Air is based on Donald L. Miller's book of the same name, documenting the real-life actions of the US Air Force's 100th Bombardment Group - also known as the Bloody Hundredth.

In March of this year, we had the privilege and pleasure of spending the better part of a day interviewing Mr. Jim Gorman in his Mansfield, Ohio home. Sadly, Jim left us last week at the age of 99. But what a life this man had.

Jim flew C-47’s in the Pacific Theater during WWII, and man did he have some stories. More sooner than later, we will be sharing Jim’s story in a special issue of Living History Group Magazine. But for the time being, we wanted to share these photos, and once again remind everyone how critical it is that we educate ourselves and our children about what it is that the WWII Generation was tasked with, and how they met that task together… not divided.

Thank for the honor of inviting us into your home to spend the day Jim. We’ll do our part to make sure your story isn’t forgotten.

Blue skies!
🇺🇸

(And a special thank you to Jason Capra of Vintage Wings Inc. for connecting is with Jim and his family in the Spring).
