I've been reading Wide Sargasso Sea and dreaming of writing a retelling of a classic novel. Rebecca, for me, is an ideal retelling. What's your favourite retelling?

Happy international dog day! Whilst Vivien’s affection for her feline companions is well known, it’s perhaps less well known that in her childhood she also had a pet bull terrier. Today’s photo was taken in India at Ootacamund when Vivien was aged around 3.
Her mother Gertrude Hartley tried to instill an appreciation of literature in her daughter and taught her to read stories of Greek mythology and Indian folklore as well as the works of Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling. To train Vivien’s powers of observation Gertrude introduced her to ‘Kim’s Game’, a mental exercise used to hone the brain agility of British Intelligence workers in Kipling’s novel Kim: At bedtime Gertrude would arrange some objects in a pattern on a tray, remove them and have Vivien recreate the pattern in the morning. The process undoubtedly had the desired effect, as Vivien developed a prodigious memory and later in life could remember her lines with ease.

This photo was part of a lot of early photographs acquired by the Vivien leigh Circle at Vivien’s estate auction at Sotheby’s in 2017, and which we subsequently donated to the V&A.
