Cinema Teknique is a site about the techniques and technology of motion pictures. You might reasonably ask, “Why does the Internet need another film making site?”
It has been my observation that a lot of sites focus on the engineering details of film making equipment without turning an eye to how they are used, and how they influence your final product. All that gear has to be used by people, and
so we must think first about how people will use them. The results we, as film makers and storytellers, seek to create with our films are emotional not technical. So why is so much discussion around film making centered on pixel count, SNR, gamut and other engineering considerations? This site aims to be my answer. The simplest version of that answer is that instead of focusing on engineering we must focus on our goals, and then attempt to understand our tools in light of those goals. More important than how technology enables, or constrains, your work is simply being able to clearly create a vision. Only then can we understand how to use the gear to deliver on that vision. It is this vision, coupled with the skills of the craftspeople with whom you collaborate, that determines the success of your creation.
“A film is a ribbon of dreams. The camera is much more than a recording apparatus; it is a medium via which messages reach us from another world that is not ours and that brings us to the heart of a great secret. Here magic begins.” -Orson Welles
