"The weird thing about EDO systems is that they're not based on sound. They're just entirely theoretical. It's just mathematical. There's nothing about how it sounds—it has nothing to do with the overtone series." Phillip Golub interview with The Tonearm

How do you record music that can't be played on conventional instruments? For 'Loop 7,' Golub and Greyfade's Joseph Branciforte devised an ingenious solution involving a digital player piano and meticulous retuning to create the impossible.

thanks to popmatters for this excellent review of greyfade's latest!

"Loop 7 is yet another in a series of ambitious experimental projects from Phillip Golub and another stunning home run for Joseph Branciforte’s Greyfade label. Both artists—as well as the musicians who join them here—are devoted to creating music that is complex, engaging, and unique. As is expected from Branciforte’s label, the sound quality is impeccable."

greyfade's ninth release, out today!

https://phillipgolub.bandcamp.com/album/loop-7

Pianist and composer Phillip Golub continues his acoustic loops project with Loop 7, dramatically expanding the project’s scope harmonically, technologically, and orchestrationally, while maintaining the emphasis on microscopic variation within tightly controlled repetition begun on his solo debut Filters.

Composed using a 22-note per octave tuning system, the studio recording of Loop 7 employs two microtonally-tuned Yahama Disklavier pianos controlled via keyboard controller. Golub is joined by a small ensemble—consisting of scordatura electric guitar, microtonal vibraphone, and live electronics—to create an absorbing realization of the piece, uncannily situated between chamber performance and imaginary studio creation.

Phillip Golub midi-controlled disklavier pianos
Aaron Edgcomb vibraphone
Ty Citerman e. guitar
Joseph Branciforte live electronics & synthsesizer

duration: 28:20
format: ultra high resolution digital (192k/24b)

recorded at Yamaha Artist Services and Greyfade Studio.

THE WIRE (UK): A Satie-esque melody is warped by the unusual tonality, further enhanced by the spare deployment of scordatura electric guitar, microtonal vibraphone, and live electronics. The nuanced variation, with Golub dropping 1/22 of a pitch with each cycle, makes it so mesmerizing I only hear new sonic portals opening up.

TOUCHING EXTREMES (IT): Another classic Greyfade release, which could undoubtedly appeal to fans of William Basinski’s piano-based output, but also of the more experimental side of Ryuichi Sakamoto and – apropos of crepuscular refractions – of early Gavin Bryars.

lamb's deep explorations of harmony, temporality, and collective resonance have made her a defining voice in contemporary experimental music and one of the most celebrated composers of her generation.

we are excited to present the results of her several years' collaboration with new york's ghost ensemble in LP form later in 2025.

today's 3 dollar digital album is LP2 from joseph branciforte & theo bleckmann (2023).

head to greyfade.com/sale to grab it at greyfade or bandcamp.

the sophomore release from vocalist theo bleckmann and electronic musician & producer joseph branciforte, LP2 is a follow-up, companion piece, and evolution of the shared musical language first developed on the duo’s debut, 2019’s LP1. returning with a meticulously crafted album of even greater scope and complexity, LP2 further dissolves the boundaries between improvisation & composition, live performance & studio production, human & machine-generated sound.

POPMATTERS (US): 9/10 stars. A stunning experimental soundscape. There’s desperation, tenderness, mystery, and hope in these grooves.

PHILIP SHERBURNE / FUTURISM RESTATED (SP): Best of 2023. If you’ve ever imagined Diskont 94-era Oval reworking Meredith Monk’s Book of Days, this is the record for you.

THE WIRE (UK): Branciforte and Bleckmann trade in their own highly specific form of abstraction, beautiful and very nearly visual. Manages to make the alien sound familiar while discovering new contours, crevices, and some positively room-rattling low end.

THIS WEEK IN SOUND (US): One of the most remarkable feats of mutual support I heard in all of 2023. Bleckmann emits economical phrases with full knowledge and appreciation of what Branciforte is capable of doing, which is transforming whispers and humming and moans into beautiful, room-filling soundscapes.
