On this day, September 30, 1959, the last scheduled flight from Croydon departed at 1738 GMT followed by the last aircraft (a private flight), at 1846 GMT and the airfield officially closed at 2130 GMT.

After 44 years of serving Britain, the last commercial service was a de Havilland DH114 Heron flight to Rotterdam piloted by Captain Geoffrey Last, who just happened to be on duty with Morton Air Services. Shortly after, a private twin-engined Miles Gemini was the last aircraft to take off before the airport formally closed.

November 1940- German Luftwaffe reconnaissance photo of RAF Croydon.

Note what looks like two roads crossing on the airfield . These were, in fact, painted onto the grass in an attempt to disguise the airfield. The airport terminal and hangars are heavily camouflagued and located to the right of the picture alongside the Purley Way (running North-South)

Join us on Sunday 17th of September for Emergency Services Day.

Every conceivable vehicle and pieces of apparatus used in the emergency services will grace the Museum site in an impressive line-up of display and serving vehicles. Plus Skye, Chase and Marshall from PAW Patrol will be making personal appearances at intervals throughout the day.

This year we are opening an hour earlier at 9am to operate a quiet hour for our visitors who are sensitive to loud or unexpected noises to be able to enjoy the experience. There is an option through the online booking system to opt for this time.
