Much of my summer was spent "supporting" Zoe before she applies to college this fall, and it got me thinking about some things.

August 27, 2023 Dear Admissions Officer, Thank you for the prompt you provided to apply to your tiny/small/medium/large/massive university in the middle of nowhere/charming college town/city as a campus. Let me tell you about myself and why I should be a student at your school.&a

It’s been three years since heather left us. I miss her very acutely on days like today, or her birthday, or big milestones for her family and friends that she’s missing, but i think about her all the time and what her take would be on a variety of subjects both deep and silly. I don’t think i have a handle on grief and loss, despite having thought quite a lot about it, with my mom, on my podcast, in what i read and try to write about. One thing i do get, though, is the crucial component that my friendships play in my life. I’ve always known this, but i think i have truly metabolized it in the past few years. Heather was a part of my life at a time where there was/is structure and contentment but also a deep contemplation for what else is out there, and a knowledge of how fragile things can be. I will treasure the memories of the times I spent with Heather - the specific chaos and hysterics and conflicts of parenting alongside each other, and then also developing ourselves in our careers, interests, goals separate from the parenting. Feeling what it meant to have a community, a tribe of women who are all still intact despite the challenges of life in a you know what. Anyway. I miss her. 🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬🐬

Happy New Year from my crew. This was a light moment tonight, literally, in a season of darkness. I love New York so much and whenever this song comes on I feel so lucky and inspired, and I just gotta sing. I’m basic, but that’s ok with me. ❤️

It has been a minute over here at MILK Productions. Been figuring some stuff on out! I’m still out here, staying cozy and safe with my core crew, working on my weaving and my parenting and my living of life in the limited way we do now. There’s a Christmas 🎄 tree in my air B and B and I just made some cookies and I’m wearing lavender velour. Life is good. Who knows what’s next?! 🔮🔮Sending light and cheer out into the world.

This is New York. A couple having a seated, candlelit dinner in the park overlooking the 9/11 tribute in lights. They were chatting, drinking wine in crystal glasses eating off of a beautifully set table with flowers and lanterns. Maybe it was an engagement situation. Maybe a reality show. 20 years later, what even is that? Is the fact this was happening tonight amazing or tacky? Accidental or intentional? Reverent or ridiculous? The thing i love about it, and about NYC is that …. who even knows what they were doing?! There’s always some bananas performative moment or live theater playing out, or photo shoots or New Yorker cartoons unfolding on every corner. These scenarios can make sense in the moment or make absolutely no sense at all. In this case, it’s this weirdo couple’s own little story to tell. It did make me happy to see it - the audacity and oddness of it felt familiar and healthy I guess? So I made Zoe take a picture of it and then we went on looking at the lights, sitting together closely as a family on a bench. Every year we gaze at the blue lasers streaming into the sky and we remember and talk about what happened and we tell our own relatively unremarkable stories of that day, that time twenty years ago, and we wonder about what it all means and marvel at how, upon reflection, actually nothing about it makes sense. 👁❤️🍎

Nature and nurture. Cool air, blue skies, mountains, bodies of water, talking for hours, hugging and smooshing my dear friends from so many phases of life - man, what a treat this trip turned out to be! Seattle is so beautiful and I loved getting to experience it with my Pittsburgh people who are forever my family like Court, Lauren, and Myrna. I got to chill and mug and giggle with Candice, my sister from the copy machine at our first jobs in publishing. There were boats, jogs, hikes, sculptures and salmon of course. Onto Portland where Jamie and i got INTO it and attempted to nature, culture, food, shopping, architecture, landscape and real estate peep. We also laughed our asses off. 🥸i even got to see my college roomie!!

So the next thing I need to figure out is how to work on the larger loom effectively. I’ve made a few pieces I had to rip up because they weren’t tight enough, because I hadn’t warped my thread well enough. There’s a lot to learn about weaving on a loom, particularly strengthening my skills and techniques so i can develop my own personal style. I follow some incredible artists and have learned through modeling many of my own designs after their work, if only to figure out dimensions and scale and learning stitches. There’s a lot to learn, but a really exciting thing I’ve been noticing is that I want to learn much much more and get better. The process of standing with (and sometimes dreaming about) a palette and making a plan to put certain colors together is also really exciting and a new feeling for me. Writing or voicing or editing something has a different feeling of satisfaction. This is so much more playful than that. I guess it’s akin to having a conversation that is deep and meaningful, but that’s not quite right either. Anyway. 💗

I made this one for a MILK friend who gifted it to another MILK friend. Both are Gen-X ladies in the place with style () and grace (). While I was weaving it with these beautiful lavender, peach and silver tones, I kept thinking about a lavender bandana wrapped in silver and gold thread i used to love, and about how Amanda is a dancer who probably wore light pink leg warmers and a side ponytail at some point in the early 80s and anyway her name is Xanadu. 🛼🤍🍑💅

Seeing this Alice Neel show with my dear friend .spiegel who I talk endlessly with about motherhood and all it’s glories and pains, was wonderful, electrifying, and extremely MILK-y. The themes in Neel’s work (social justice, feminism, family, loss, mental health) have never been more urgent, and artists like Neel have paved the way by listening and celebrating (but not hollowly glorifying) women’s work. More like this!

In the car, sitting shotgun, headed to the lake. Looking forward to laughing and celebrating some dear old (young) generous friends this weekend. Thinking a lot about this last year and all of those phases and moments are still very much with me. I’m still getting used to not being scared and anxious and depressed about pretty much everything, all the time. I want this summer to focus on laughter and appreciation of my good fortunes, with that background reminder that anything can happen at anytime and the time is now. I’m trying to spend time with people I love and and get back to some of the creative and critical thinking I’ve missed being able to engage with, and to truly try to be grateful. Thanks for sticking with me here after a year of not making my show, and of doing other strange things to cope. Happy 4th. ❤️🤍💙
