Long traffic delays were experienced in Ballyfermot on Thursday evening as protesters blocked traffic at the roundabout on Ballyfermot Road. The protesters shouted 'Ballyfermot says no' and prevented traffic from moving along the main road for approximately 90 minutes. It is understood the group were protesting against accommodation for refugees and international protection applicants.

The protest was one of many to have taken place in Dublin with a number of others reported in Clondalkin, Tallaght, East Wall and Ballymun. A protest on the M50 saw members of the far right Nationist Party in attendance, including party leader Justin Barrett.

It was reported that an individual involved in organising the Ballyfermot protest led a group to a local councillor's home. Although the local representative was not at home, it is understood his family were left terrified by the group.

It is not clear if there are further such protests planed for Ballyfermot, although local representatives have been vocal against the spread of false rumours. A social media post by the Chairman of the BLCO confirmed that the local sports complex is not being used as a residential centre after false information was spread regarding its use. Other local representatives have confirmed that contrary to the rumours that have been spread about the use of local facilities, there are no spaces in Ballyfermot that are planned to be used for accommodating refugees and international protection applicants.

It has been confirmed that 839 residential units have been given the green light for a huge development at the former De La Salle National School in Ballyfermot.

An Bord Pleanála granted permission for the development on the old school site. Dwyer Nolan Developments Ltd were initially seeking to build 927 units but this has been scaled back. A number of restrictions have also been placed on the height, restricting the planned development to eight, ten, eleven and twelve storeys. The original plans included heights up to thirteen storeys.

Concerns had been raised regarding local infrastructure issues at previously held community meetings attended by local representatives.
