This summer’s outfit of the day theme is simple—have fun! The style rules are there are no rules, so feel free to mix trends, patterns, fabrics, and even decades, all in the same look. We are seeing a comeback of the early 2K’s preppy athlete look, along with vintage boho that was everywhere in 2005. Loose fitting “mom jeans,” synonymous with 90s-cool, continue to take over skinny jeans. Upscale designer pieces will be kept to a minimum in the form of classics and basics rather than trendy, just-for-now pieces, due to the climbing costs.

By - Seattle Art Museum -

Juneteenth—celebrated every year on June 19—is a national holiday celebrating the day Black Americans were granted their freedom and status as human citizens in the United States. A common misconception exists that slaves were freed with the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863 or at the end of the Civil War on April 9, 1865, but the reality is southern states rejected Union laws and kept their slaves in the dark about their freedom in the hopes that they could still win the war. Some states, such as Delaware and Kentucky, remained in a state of rebellion and continued to allow slavery. As one of the most remote southern states with a low Union presence, Texas served as a refuge for slave owners—a place to hide enslaved Africans from in hopes of keeping what they considered to be their “property.” Texas saw an influx of over three times as many slaves after the proclamation was issued. It wasn’t until Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived on the island of Galveston, Texas on the morning of June 19, 1865 and read the following words that many enslaved Africans found out about their freedom:

“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

From these words, Juneteenth was born.

Still, this day in history did not end the practice of slavery entirely. Thousands of accounts from Black Americans document their continued enslavement beyond Juneteenth—some not freed until as late as the 1960s, forced into labor and isolated from the advocacy being done through the Civil Rights Movement.

June is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall riots, and works to achieve equal justice and equal opportunity for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) Americans.

Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBT Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. Pat Wood is celebrating her tenth year in Anderson and with the Foothills Writers Guild. During this time, she has written well over 200 poems. Most of her poems are about family or nature. Here is one of her finest – a tribute to her father. It has a message for all dads this Father’s Day.

Champion Father
By Patricia Wood

Every child needs a champion.
He was my champion.

Even though my twin brother liked to
fish and hunt and build and
break things – male things to do –
my dad knew I was a thinker and
serious like he was. He knew there was
a brain under that thick skull.

We were both voracious readers,
debaters, discussers, expounders.
I’m still curious about everything,
and so was he till his last breath.

The quiet child needed a champion,
and he is still my champion.
Rooting for me yet –
I feel his presence.

He was the kindest of men
and a boon to a daughter.

Looking for a unique culinary experience this weekend? Head over to the Low Country for the Charleston Wine + Food event - "A Spread".

Juneteenth has been celebrated since 1865 as a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

The holiday honors Black progress, creativity, and togetherness. The traditions of this annual celebration are often rooted in food and gathering. Join Lowcountry native Rashaunda Grant of Carolina Cookery in the CHSWF Test Kitchen as she shares the Juneteenth tradition of “hot links and red drinks” which celebrates Black culture and the power that food has to share stories. Guests will gather around the kitchen to learn how to make their own hot links while sipping on a delicious red drink cocktail before enjoying a meal together. Leave with a full belly and your own homemade hot links to continue the celebrations at home!

Looking for more joy in your life? One way to get more joy is give more joy, give of yourself and give service to others. Read more about this in our May issue in the article - "Service - The Pathway to Joy"

The multifaceted idea of service has been bouncing around my head since I attended the 100th anniversary of the Junior League of Columbia in March. South Carolina and especially Anderson County have a long history of outstanding role models in the area of service. I was so inspired as I sat in that room of powerful purpose-driven women. There was much talk about creating our individual legacies. I was empowered to roll up my sleeves and get to work.

You don’t have to look hard to see the legacies of service all around us daily. Jennie Gilmer is proof that one person can change the landscape. She began the process in 1904 that gave us Anmed Health. I was interested in some viewpoints on service from some who are giving their all to our community. Service truly does make a difference and the biggest secret might be what you get in return. The joy of making a difference is such a blessing.
