An obituary posted this day, January 1st 1863, in the Richmond Daily Dispatch.

“The leaden messenger sent by Death to summon him as another sacrifice on the altar of his country, entered his left eye and passed out near the right ear. Oh! how much we shall miss his soft voice and pleasant face. When the last trumpet shall summon from their graves the vast armies that have fallen in battle to the throne of Divine Justice and Mercy. Liberty will be there to plead for the pardon of those who have perished in her cause, and the tears and prayers of a grateful nation registered in their favor in the Recording Angel's book.”

METHODIST PREACHERS ARRESTED

The Rockingham Register, of the 27th instant, says:

We learn from Rev. Captain Rippotoe, a gallant Captain in the Confederate Army, and a most excellent member of the Baltimore Annual Conference, that the following preachers have been arrested by the Lincoln despotism, and sent either to Fort McHenry or Fort Lafayette: Revs. S. V. Blake, (formerly a Presiding Elder on the Rochingham District), Dr. J. McK. Reilley, and Fellder Israel. These gentlemen are all well known in Virginia and Maryland as pious, God-fearing men, who minded their own business, and never interfered with matters beyond the province of their sacred and holy calling.

SINGULAR STATE FLAG

The flag of the Texas camp, at Camp Wigfall, near Dumfries, Va., is made of the bridal dress of Mrs. Wigfall. Says the correspondent of the Austin Gazette:

It bears the emblem of the "Lone Star”, and this is of pure white silk, set in blue ground; the folds are purple and white. The hearts of all are riveted to it. It never will be given up. An old war-worn warrior approached it, and as his eyes gazed steadily upon the banner, he said: "That star was made of the bridal dress of the lady of our gallant colonel. She worked it with her fair hands, and gave it to us to carry through the battles of our country. How could we fail to protect. How could we fail to protect it with our lives? No, Sir! I never failed to meet the enemy when that star was our watchword, and now when our whole South is in danger, I feel that my poor life can be given up easily upon that flag as my shroud." The old fellow with his grey heirs, still stands before my memory. Such is the feeling of every Texan.
