🤳Artist Takeover: Joan Choo

Jovan Choo, a self-taught photographer based in Singapore, has been capturing moments on film since February 2023. Photography serves as his chosen medium for creativity, enabling him to unearth stories and beauty in the ordinary, both within Singapore and across neighboring countries.

During his eagerly anticipated annual visit to his relatives' home for Chinese New Year festivities, Jovan was intrigued by its enduring charm and history. Surprisingly, upon questioning his grandmother about their reluctance to renovate the house, he discovered its rich heritage chronicled in a Malaysian newspaper. The house, constructed with salvaged materials from their former residence in Toa Payoh, Singapore, exuded rustic charm reminiscent of a kampung house.

🗼🌸 Tokyo Odyssey is a narrative documentary on the strange and mysterious perspective of Tokyo and its surroundings.

Through the lens of an outsider, the photo series delves into the multifaceted layers of Tokyo’s unique universe - a harmonious collision of Eastern and Western, traditional and subculture, orders and chaos, polite and yet hysterical. When a universe can be so multifaceted, it becomes surreal. By blurring the lines between fiction and reality, these visual narratives offer viewers a surreal glimpse into the captivating allure of this juxtaposed universe.

🤳Artist Takeover: Mihai Costache

Mihai Costache’s latest project, ‘Hanging Gardens’ delves into the indoor Romanian jungles that grace communist-era housing blocks in a part fable, part documentary attempt at investigating the origins of the phenomenon.

“If they ever existed, the Hanging Gardens were a fantastic multi-level structure built by the ancient Babylonians. 2500 years later, other improbable gardens are rising in Romania. I grew up next to one. In our building a jungle overran the corridor, thriving against all odds. It was the work of my grandma, Semiramida. Strangely enough, she had the same name as the ancient queen who created the Hanging Gardens. When I was a kid, I used to believe the legend was actually about her. I still do.” Excerpt from “Hanging Gardens” prologue

The “Hanging Gardens” phenomenon survives the generation who created it. The disruption of rural communities and the accelerated urbanization that happened up until the late ‘80s still shapes Romania today.

The project is mostly set on the floor of our apartment, where she spent most of the days, and some from the hospital after the operation.”

🤳ARTIST TAKEOVER: Prabu Rizki

Prabu Rizki is a documentary photographer from Palembang, Indonesia who is interested in social and environmental issues. These images are from his project titled ‘Tunggu Tumbang Bumi’ or ‘Tunggu Tumbang’s Land’

Semende is a small sub-district 8 hours from Palembang. Besides producing coffee, Semende has a unique culture that has been passed on through generations for hundreds of years. In the custom known as Tunggu Tubang, the eldest daughter in the family has a responsibility to care for the family’s inheritance. Herliyati (46), a resident of Cahaya Alam Village, Semende Darat Ulu, Muara Enim Regency, has been appointed as Tunggu Tubang in her family since young. She has to care for her ancestor's rice fields, houses, coffee plantations and fish ponds.

The locals believe that the tradition of Tunggu Tubang is created by puyang (the elders within the local community). Those who have been appointed as Tunggu Tubang are allowed to buy new land, but may not sell any land belonging to their ancestors. If this rule is violated, the Semende people believe that the Tunggu Tubang's family are in for a disaster.

🤳ARTIST TAKEOVER: Pau Poveda

"Isla de Perros" encapsulates photographer Pau Poveda's exploration of Turkey. In late 2022, he embarked on this journey, and by September 2023, a photography book emerged from the experience.

Isla de Perros gives thanks to primitive honor.  In this “Island” I found myself facing something greater than me, something with more way done than loneliness. Trying to control that, borns this project.  The great current absorbs you and pulls you into its lap to help you become part of its strangeness, a common strangeness, which is rare. Isla de Perros is that search for understanding and control of a land. With Isla de Perros I wanted to create a new world, a world where not everyone can acces, like finding a castle in the sky. They belong to the origins of time.  Unable to understand what surrounds you, you can only glide by like a ghost and let amazement win. “Perros” its the adjective Im using to define the people who walk through this land, understanding it as something greater than the condition of “Human”, making them more intuitive, loyal and sentimental. A dog will never lie to you, they show you exactly what are they feeling. Also, in Turkey, being in the street  is a way of living, enjoying the primary entertainment, drinking tea, observing, talking with strangers and friends, losing time, but wining.  Going out into the streets is what will make us survive as a community.

Today is the last day of the Artist Takeover featuring Haneul Lee. 'Boomers’ is a project containing portraitures of “Ahjeossi” also known as middle-aged man or uncle in South Korea.

“When I recall memories of the past, I think of specific scenes. Instead of videos, I think about the different sights and sounds that are in that scene. I believe that through my photos, I am capturing those different scenes.”

‘Boomers’ is a project containing portraitures of “Ahjeossi” also known as middle-aged man or uncle in South Korea.

“The most interesting thing is, they usually tell me about their past. For example, what kind of person he WAS, what kind of job he HAD, how cool they WERE in the past. It seems like they were still living in the past and miss the time. What I wanted to capture was the present “Ajeossi” going through but their stories kept going back to the past."

‘Boomers’ is a project containing portraitures of “Ahjeossi” also known as middle-aged man or uncle in South Korea.

I called him “Mario Ajeossi” because his hat resembled the popular character Mario. When I complimented him on his style, he told me that this was the reason he was really popular when he was 20 years old. After my encounter with him, I was drawn to the charm of these “Ajeossi” who show their own unique fashion style without minding what others would think, and how they are living in the present while staying rooted in the past.

This entire week, we’ll be sharing ‘Boomers’ a project by South Korean photographer, Haneul Lee. She employs photography as a medium to delve into diverse forms of connections between herself and others. Her art draws inspiration from the nuanced uncertainties that surface in her encounters with strangers. One of her projects, "Strangers," involved documenting approximately 400 individuals, leading her to embark on a subsequent endeavour titled ‘Boomers’. ‘Boomers’ is a project containing portraitures of “Ahjeossi” also known as middle-aged man or uncle in South Korea. Her photo project has been exhibited in various international exhibitions.

“From the continuous shooting of portraits, my interest for it grew and I started searching on the streets for more interesting subjects. That is when the “Ajeossi” caught my eyes. Out of curiosity, I took photos of them once or twice, and I thought about making an archive of them, which is how I started the project. I wanted to focus on subjects from a different gender and generation. In Korea, older men are generally labeled with the term “Ajeossi”, a term that has no equivalent in other countries except “Ojisan” in Japan. The idea of an “Ajeossi” is similar to a “boomer” in the Western world, and usually comes with a negative connotation. I wanted to delve into this label and what defines an “Ajeossi”, and interpret this group of people from different perspectives, showing the unique and individualistic sides of these subjects beyond the generic label that society has on them.”

The last day sharing 'Streets of Taiwan' by José Enrique Montes Hernande.

🌐🌐🌐🌐 Stay tune tomm for an exclusive documentary release in Jose's photo project!

"While driving around the southern part of Taiwan, I stumbled on a temple procession. Processions are often lead by a Spirit Medium, or ‘Tongji’. Tongji push their bodies to the extreme and self-mutilation is quite common. They are believed to be earthly, living vehicles of Divine expression. In this particular scene, the Tongji is traveling with his chariot, cigarette in hand; the spiked ball that he is flagellating himself with is still attached to the skin of his back.  His ear is noticeably mutilated. The blue of the sky, and the bright summer light highlight this small scene."

This entire week, we’ll be sharing works by José Enrique Montes Hernandez who for the past 7 years have been living and documenting the ‘Streets of Taiwan’.

“It's a country that is changing fast, subjects or structures that I took photos of 7 years ago are not there anymore. I’m happy to have documented Taiwan in my own way. Now that I’m not there anymore, looking back at the pictures makes me want to self- publish a book. Taiwan was a big part of my life, and I’ll always be grateful to have had the chance to live there.

Captured this shot in a bustling flea market down in southern Taiwan. There's something intriguing about it—the winter light casting a cool blue hue and an old man, who clearly is a gangster (by his tattoos), taking a break to enjoy a head massage.”
